Bought?

Seriously, though, you're right that it's basically just for warez right now (which is why I'm still on 3.15, which no version of the exploit supports yet), but the potential is much, much broader than that. Pretty much the whole Game OS could be replaced by custom code (at load/exploit time, not in the sense of installing CFW) if someone wants to do that.

I'm off by a year, so sue me :D Y'know, in almost every previous generation this would be the console's dying days.

May well be the case that this forces things to a head.

Though piracy is seriously enabled through this, it would be great if it also opened the door for legit uses. Imagine a render farm or cloud network running for a fraction of the cost, consisting of PS3 units. (If such a thing is possible.)

Or heck, if the PS2 was able to guide a missile, we can bring WarGames to life with 5 PS3s and a router!

This hack also allows unsigned files to be run, so homebrew and fan translations of games that will never be released in the West are possible.

I own a PS3, and I love MAME because there are so many great games that are hard to find, but I wouldn't bother pirating PS3 because there are only a couple of games out a year that I actually want to play and I don't find the cost prohibitive.

The number of truly shitty commercial releases for consoles is impressive.

Except people aren't actually buying this for "potential", they're buying it for pirating games.

Oh man I can't wait to run <some OS/MAME/some emulator/some application> on my PS3, it's not like I can't do that with my PC already.

Free rentals are a plus, so is getting a game before release date. I "got" metroid other m a week before release but still had my retail copy preordered, had it show up and it was purchased gladly. I always buy a game I like... but who hasn't played or sampled a game for free who lurks around on the forums.

It doesn't really bother me and the possibilities this could lead to are quite interesting. It's like the PSP..... it's WAY more attractive once you hack it.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

we ain't "people"

and my PC isn't connected to my TV, in front of my couch. that's one reason why I bought a PS3 with OtherOS. you know, that thing Sony stole from me.

It doesn't matter whether it bothers you or not; my concern is whether modchip discussion is allowed, since selling modchipped consoles isn't.

Also, it's not Sony's fault, or the PSP's fault that it isn't "interesting" (in your opinion).

Congrats, you're one of the couple hundred who care about OtherOS. If I released a console and sold millions of them, making me millions of dollars and got word that it's potentially exploitable via some software I've included--resulting in loss of profits, and illegal activities--then yeah, I'd remove it as well.

Jesus christ... take a pill. I bought a PSP day one on launch from japan when I was still in the army. I found it interesting before the hack and liked the machine. I just liked it a lot more once I got mine hacked.... that was less than a year ago. I'm beginning to wonder if you ARE Ceph sometimes. I'd like to see you two in the Thunderdome....

Hardware gets cracked... it happens to most all of them eventually. Nothing new..... I like my xbox one hacked a lot more once it was modded also. All my games on one HD and they load quicker, then all the emulation stuff. I don't need any of that but it is a nice free bonus.

I have all the games loaded on the shelf via retail copies so no guilt either.

I don't even understand what your point is honestly, all I said was i'm indifferent on the matter but was open to what my come of it... that and I enjoy my psp more with the hack then without. Feel free to get riled up even more, next time I'll ask if I can comment on something with your blessing, god forbid someone say anything not authorized by you.

It doesn't really bother me
As if to imply that because it doesn't bother you, it's perfectly acceptable to talk about here.

I mean if it's perfectly acceptable then fine, I'm just trying to find out why there's one set of rules for selling modded consoles and another for talking about them.

When I said that I wasn't referring to that.... as in weather we can or cannot discuss it. I was simply making a flat blanket statement about the PS3 being hacked in general.... it doesn't bother me regardless if we can or can't talk about that on here. That doesn't really bother me either for the record, I'd rather be able to talk about it as long as it doesn't go into where can I get "x" game off the net for free. But if the mods say no I won't get my panties in a knot over it.

I doubt talk of a console being exploited or hacked is against the rules especially since there are no links to said software or anything, this is a topic to merely discuss the possibilities and repurcussions of this news.

Demon's Souls is pretty damn old school in difficulty. It's also barely a multiplayer game - not in any conventional sense.

Demon's Souls is definitely an old school game. Actually, the progression in this game reminds me grandly of shmups : just die and retry.

The great irony here is that the actual security hole wasn't in Other OS mode itself, and it's likely that Sony never actually fixed it. I've already seen one PS3 hacker claim that it can be triggered from Game OS using the jailbreak.

The war for Piracy continues, I guess.

But in all honesty, I still have my PS2 HDD I modded ages ago working. :?

I guess I kinda don't see the point, since my PS3 doesn't have an Emotion Chip (i.e. can't play PS2 games anyway). And last I checked it couldn't play PSone backups either unless they're modded as EBOOTs and you bought them off PSN Store.

Untill I can transfer the contents of my PS2 HDD into my PS3 and play Ibara or Korean Guilty Gear XX #Reload, I doubt there's much to talk about here. To say nothing of PS3 backups (probably break the 4GB barrier, lol)

I think the main reason Sony has to deal with this crap is because they're so Anally Retentive on backwards compatibility.

And yes, I have 3.42, which was flagged as a mandatory patch by Sony which basically means no PSN access unless you got it patched against this.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

I'm really looking forward to what can come of this hack. I haven't updated my PS3 past 3.41, so I'm good. Once I can run the hack via my PSP, I'll try it for myself. Lack of PSN access doesn't really bother me, since I do 99% of my online gaming on the 360.

On an unrelated note, I'm not a fan of Demon's Souls' online implementation over all. It's got a few good ideas, but I find it more annoying than fun, mainly due to all the gameplay compromises that had to be done in order for its online mode to work as it is.

Don't worry champ, thankfully this forum has moderators to make the decision so you don't have to.

In the meantime, we're just about up to speed with all the mainstream commercial games sites that have been running info on this since news broke.
Personally, let's have it. My PS3 is a freaking AVI playing brick that's done little to nothing for me regarding games, so if it's potential is about to be expanded tenfold, I'm ready to board that train.
