So now that the ps3 has been hacked/exploited how many people are going to purchase one? piracy is a key factor in the purchase of hardware, if games are aquireable for free or a low price then I know 9 people out of ten would go for the free option.
Also Sony has just released a new update to counter the hack known as PSgroove a kick in the balls for the people who spent like $150 on the usb dongle (even thought the software can be found for free now) however the source code for the software will be modified to counter this all you need to do is not update.
This reminds me of the story between Sony and DarkAlex with his psp shenanigans
Let battle commence!

Where could I E-mail or mail to if I want to address my ideas and Opinions?
Seems like it will be business as usual. The perception of the PS3 as pirate/mod friendly device is nearly non-existent, and whatever mod that was just released comes a little to late in the PS3's life cycle...
Granted some will try to take advantage of it....personally I don't really play many games to bother pirating on the PS3. And I'm to lazy to bother...
This is one hack I won't bother with. There's no games to pirate that I can't or won't buy, too many chances that the exploit will get patched out with the quickness, and I like shopping and playing on PSN. I'll stick to paying for stuff.
By the way, if anyone installed the 3.42 patch and feels like using hacks afterwards, all they need to do is backup their saves and format the HD. There, console ready for hacking again.
For me, the luxury of PS3 has always been that I haven't had to spend time pirating and configuring stuff. Then again, if it was easy, I would pirate SSF4 just so I could play it any time without swapping discs.

It's four years old..
Before Pope John Paul died he decreed that Aliens were also GOD's creatures and we should treat them with respect.

Sony accomplished nothing with that update.
where did you hear/read that?
I don't think it's correct.
I always assumed that after formatting the HD you'd need to redownload the patch again, hence my previous comment. I might be wrong though.
Either way, the official jailbreak site implies that they're already working on a way around the new firmware:
We have received many emails asking about updates, we have a solution in the works (unlike all copy cat clone makers), Our solution will be released within 7 days as well and will only work with original units.
Unless you have a launch unit, PS3 only has 16MB (yes, sixteen) of internal flash memory. The launch unit had 256MB of internal flash memory to store system software (aka firmware).
The early version of PS3 had 256 megabytes of flash memory to store firmware, using two NAND 128MB Samsung flash chips. The installed firmware data is interleaved between the two flash chips for speed. To prevent errors, Error Correcting Code (ECC) Checksum is added/used on the data in the PS3 flash chips. In newer PS3, a single 16MB Spansion flash chip is used.
Because of the smaller flash chips in later versions, newer firmware versions allow for the firmware data to be partially stored on the harddrive (instead of totally inside the firmware), making the flash purely responsible for holding data involved in the critical booting up process. This allows for cheaper flash chips, while using the harddrive for later bootup stages.
correct me if im wrong, but arent ps3 games on bluray discs?
the burners are still quite costly and so are the blank discs....still gonna cost ya....piracy or retail
but as others have said, the reason i dont ever use my ps3 isnt having to pay for games.....its because the games available suck....not just ps3,but current gen in general , but thats for another thread

The idea behind Jailbreak is that people now can rent/borrow games, install them on the HDD and return them afterwards. So they don't need to buy games anymore.
Since this forum is against piracy, and this device doesn't kill region protection and is practically bought indirectly for the use of piracy, shouldn't this thread be closed?

it will eventually kill the region protection of PS1 and 2 games. US gamers will be able to display import PS2 shmups in progressive scan for their flat panel TVs.
and we are not talking about one device, but a trick that is now open sourced.

ahhhh....that makes more sense....
thanks
still....give me a game worth playing and i will gladly throw down retail.....console games are cheap compared to pcb's....shame the good ones are so few and far between it seems
