Games for Iphone/Ipod/Ipad

Post by Rebel Ninja »

Aside from the CAVE shmups what games has everyone enjoyed from the app store? Personally I really liked "plants vs Zombies","Doddle Jump" as well as the first episode of "Higurashi when they cry".

I really enjoyed monkey island 2 on iPad, perfectly suited for the touchscreen interface.

Angry Birds is an addictive must have, whether normal or "HD".

Hmmm, Angry Birds is so incredibly popular but I got bored of it after the initial set of stages. It's kind of like Worms without all the good features and a lot of trial and error.
Doodle jump is the only one I found to be really addictive bar the Cave stuff, which is ace (Espgaluda II in particular is an amazing little port.)

Another vote for the Monkey Island series, especially if you haven't played it and Doodle Jump, damn addicting o.0 Also pretty addicting is Canabalt, I'd even say as much as Doodle Jump but the sessions are a little longer so that's probably why I play it less. Being a JRPG and Square Enix fanboi I also enjoyed Chaos Rings even though it's pretty much more of the same. Haven't finished it yet though, it's pretty long for an iPhone game and probably the most expensive one out there xD

The Tower Defense games aren't bad either, they're fun for at least a couple of plays or maps, I've only played Crystal Defenders and Fieldrunners but they were good for quite some time, others like Sentinel felt more like a ripoff, so unbalanced <_< I remember in Sentinel you could place a few towers near the start of the map and fast forward 30 levels or so, after which the difficulty suddenly spikes for some reason.

One thing I really like though are the tons (Well tons compared to other portables xD) of roguelikes you can easily find. There's some nice faithful ports of Nethack, Slash 'EM, POWDER, rogue and I think crawl for free on the app store, still haven't gotten bored of those! Of course there's a bunch of commercial ones but imo they're not as good but still fun like 100 rogues (bit unbalanced after the first several levels though imo). The only one I didn't like was 8Bit Defense, looked pretty good though so maybe I just don't like the system + resetting character level to 1 at the start of each dungeon.

Score Attacks:
Solipskier and Canabalt (these are my two main short score-attack addictions, love them to bits, brilliant for the short commute and the quick blast). Also Mr. AahH!!, Mr. Space!!, FlightControl, KERN, Angry Birds, Monster Dash.

Roguelikes:
Sword of Fargoal.

Puzzlers:
Chop Sushi, Drop7, Carcassonne, Puzzle Prism.

Action:
Saucelifter, Osmos, Plunderland, Plants vs Zombies.

Simulation:
SimCity, Civilisation Revolution.

Shootemups:
rRootage, Space Invaders, the Cave games.

I actually haven't bought a lot of iPad stuff, but I've liked Implode! XL and Fruit Ninja. Most of the others I have purchased have already been mentioned here.

Oh, and there's also the Beavis and Butt-Head app I did all the QA testing for, but it's probably not worth getting unless you were a fan of the show.

If you're into Mahjong, Hudson put their game 雀狂 (JanKyo) on the US iPad store as well. The game is still in Japanese, but if you're interested, it's the only decent real Mahjong game on the US iPad store. (There's a billion games with "Mahjong" in the title but they're all Shanghai, not Mahjong. Go figure.) If you know how to play but don't know how to read Japanese, on the main menu the upper-rightmost option is "local game" (vs cpu), and that'll be enough to get your money's worth. :)

(The rest of the options are for, well, options, and for netplay.)

Osmos, rRootage, Infinity Gene, and Escape are my non Cave games I think are worth checking out. I'm quite new to gaming on the iPhone/Pad though.

Definitely going to get KERN!!

I like the idea of a roguelike on the iWhatever, so I'm going to look into this. Thanks for the heads up.

All I have is rRootage for my shitty 1st-gen iTouch. I have to turn music and sound off to optimize framerate. Better than nothing I suppose.

I would also highly reccomend "Phoenix Wright" on the Iphone for only £2.99! Really fun game that works perfectly with touch controls. There isn't much point in buying this if you've already got it on the DS though (although I did).

I just got "Game Dev Story". It appears to be part of a series released in Japan on PC and mobile phones. It's a "management-type" game and for £2.39 is a great buy.

Plants vs Zombies is the best application I have ever downloaded from the apple apps store. It has been keeping me awake for hours. Every challenge I had is so much fun. I have finished the series already but I repeated it. Try this one and I'm sure you would be addicted too. :D

really cannot be under stated.

I'm on my 6th loop of Game Dev Story, so simple and yet so entertaining. I hazard to say it's one of the best games of the year.

I've been trying to get it, but iTunes keeps declining my payment method for some idiotic reason.

If anyone here likes visual novels, KiraKira and Gift are on the iDevices too (minus the H content).

my favorite game and my biggest addiction…

Star*Burst

It is a Klax style game… it is basically up-side-down Klax, and I am understanding that some folks involved with the original Klax had a hand in developing Star*Burst
