I know quite a few of us have already made plans for this, including myself, and it would be nice to see a few more people going, there will be quite a lot of shmups there to play, and I'd like to have another great time

Since London meet VIII is now over, I think we should now plan to get a bit of a shmups meetup at R3PLAY - http://r3play.info/

Re: Shmups R3PLAY Thread (November 6th/7th - Blackpool) & COMPO!
Hi all!
I thought I'd just add this to the existing thread for R3PLAY, instead of starting something new. I'm going to it, with a few friends and the "handy with a joystick" girlfriend, be nice to meet up and prove that I actually exist and are still alive and shmupping!
COMPO TIME!
Anyway, I have been kindly given two WEEKEND tickets for the event, so am putting them up here in a wee competition, so here it is.
THE QUESTION!
Which is my favourite shmup?
R-Type?
UFO Robo Dangar?
Nemesis?
CLUE see shmups.com homepage piccy!
Rules!
PM me (malc) with your answer. One entry only please.
I will choose the winners at random with the help of my dog. She is very fair.
There will be TWO winners, who will receive one ticket each.
Only enter if you will actually GO! Please, if you don't think you will go, don't enter. I don't want to waste em
Closing Date, erm, sometime soon but not too late. Lets say 15th October?
GOOD LUCK! malc

My little Defender cab is being picked up tomorrow too, so that'll be making an appearance for the oldschoolers.

Seconded! Great event.
Was good to meet you Crackfox. Never saw the final results for the Shmups competition. Think I was 2nd best on Psyvariar 2 . . . but my score was beaten by about 4X . Good laugh anyway!
Played some Slap Fight on an Amstrad CPC 464 later - The pace of that one was a little more forgiving
Definitely want a candy cab more than ever now though!

Re: Shmups R3PLAY Thread (Nov6th/7th - Blackpool) + WIN TICKETS!
Big thanks post going up on AO later today when I get back, but thanks to everyone that helped out and attended.
Some really classy play on the shmups cabs - Smraedis playing a single credit on Batrider both days, 1CC and high score no-one got close to. Ibara got more play than Ketsui too
Interesting to see public preferences - Vulcan Venture didn't see much play at all, whereas Sengoku Ace was constantly busy.

Re: Shmups R3PLAY Thread (Nov6th/7th - Blackpool) + WIN TICKETS!
It was an awesome event, just before I roll up and die in a bed...
(Don't ask me about other scores, I can't remember and the organisers have the spreadsheet I wrote it all in!
)
From memory:
Psyvariar 2 high score: Smraedis (approx 14 million, 2nd place approx 7 million)
Ketsui high score: Smraedis (approx 60 million, 2nd place approx 40 million)
Sengoku Ace high score: Skykid (approx 350k, Smraedis approx 324k, I think)
First place: Smraedis with 291% of the highest scores on the games (max is 300%, natch)
Second place: Skykid with approx 168% of the highest scores on the games.
Fighting spirit special prize for the approx. 11 year old kid who was over from Ireland with his dad and entered against all you beasts anyway!
Props to alien_mame from AO that helped me track scores and administer the competition (all 5 hours of it!). Props to all the people who entered, too - some nice playing there (and brave first attempts at the games by others), and sublime sportsmanship from all, no toys thrown out of prams!
IIRC, third best, a player who re-appeared near the end to finish his scores got 7million, Smraedis got 14million. You were second place till about a half-hour from the end of the tournament.Edwards80 wrote:Never saw the final results for the Shmups competition. Thanks for running the compo - all the events over the weekend were really well run - can't be easy to keep something like that from descending into chaos!
Hope to meet some of you folks again in the future.

Re: Shmups R3PLAY Thread (Nov6th/7th - Blackpool) + WIN TICKETS!
CRACKFOX! is that you man? Hows yer heid an yer belly and yer arse? (you were drinking guinness after all, it does things to my arse). Hello to other shmuppers I bumped into.
Yeh I should have worn a badge or something, I should have known more people there, said hello to a few anyway, but most of the time trying to get a go on Muchi Muchi Pork and Akai Kanata, which was utterly smooth and utterly desirable. I want one. I also should have figured out how to play it properly as well, didnt really understand how that thing that wobbled like X-Multiply worked, but it was good fun just having a straightforward blast on it. Wonderful tidy cabs they were playing on, almost small enough to be nickable.
Highlights? Vulcan Venture for me. I had a few good goes on it, got 2nd place and no better, kept on dying at the same bit on level 4. Bloody volcanoes of the upside down variety. Great to play it in its native format again.
Oh and Radirgy as well, lovely to play it on a cab. I dont think I was the best at it, but I had an inkling of how it worked, since I've got the gamecube version, and knew how to play it fairly technically. Got top slot which I was quite happy, but yes, only because nobody else knew what they were actually doing thankfully!
Also,, I just cant gel with Ibara. Was glad to see it there, thought I could finally get into it, after struggling with ps2 version so long. Nope, still dont get it.
One I did get was Batrider though, loved playing that several times and having a few good medalling runs.
Hmm was there anything else that really stood out? Oh I think there was a Raiden 2 but I couldnt get on it, it was really busy, a real classic.
First day was better for me as I got really plastered, and I actually played better in that state. Weird innit?
Great to get out to a meet for once, although I did mostly stay in one corner most of the time. I would have liked to have had a go of some more pinballs but they were getting hogged silly, one guy was at a machine for about 2 hours solid. Move on and give somebody else a go, jeeezzz...
bye! - malc

Congrats to Smraedis and Skykid!
A quick breakdown for your amusement:
- Walked through the R3play doors and immediately Chi's like, "you're in the shmups competition, right?" Before I could even think about it the deal was done.
- I started with the worst run ever on Psyvariar 2 (lowest score of the day - can't play the game) and died on the first stage.
- I lost two lives on the first boss of Ketsui (I know) and then somehow soldiered through to the boss of stage 3 with nothing but scoring in mind.
- Then I had to play Sengoku Ace for the first time ever. As I'd never touched the game I had no idea if I was doing well or not (think I got to stage 5) and Chi told me I'd beat Smraedis's score on it, which made me feel pretty damn good.
Next thing I know I've got 2nd place. Sweet.

Witchfinder has just posted the shmups scores on the Retrogamer forum - I can't complain at 5th - I had never touched Ketsui before and had only played Samurai aces a couple of times
Good fun though.

I played very safe on Ketsui, until I got to 40 millions.. and then had a lot of bad luck trying to score.
Got 81 million later on in the day though, which I'm more than happy with.
Had a great time of course

You did however come first bleedin' place (as usual) so none of it really matters.
