Dead thread bump.

After brief ownership of a Peavey Raptor Plus EXP and an Ibanez RG450, I think I've settled down on these two here - Ibanez RG170R and Ministar Lestar.



The Ministar was pretty much an impulse buy, it was so cheap and dorky, I couldn't resist. It's basically a stick with strings and pickups, but a travel guitar might come in handy some day. I found it surprisingly comfortable to use, I hardly needed any adjustment to it at all. I would have preferred to get the Castar model, but the shop only had a couple of Microstars and one Lestar. Still, it's deceptively decent, and more compact and a fraction of the cost of a Traveller. An unexpected thing is that it smells weird. I hope that goes away eventually.

As for going from RG450 to the lower-end RG170R, the Floyd-style bridge was too much of a PITA to mess around with, and it seemed a bit of a waste to block it off. The 170 still has a floating bridge but it's easier just to crank up the trem springs and make it dive-only. Plus, it was in better condition to start with...

It's pretty and it plays like a dream but through playing I have discovered that P90's just don't do it for me like humbuckers do.

Nice bit of wood is a SG, ive a 1970s Guild S100 deluxe w/ bigsby tremlo which is guild's clone of the SG, sounds nice with the 25+ year old humbuckers thats on it, but it would of been even better if it had PAFs on

I posted this in off topic, but figured it should be here.

Frenzel 5e3 head with fender and marshal tone stacks, line out, and 40w upgrade option. The cab is built by saxon cabs in Ontario and fitted with a Cannabis Rex speaker.



I'm now kicking myself for not going with the effects loop options. I didn't bother since I build my own pedals with true bypass, but I've recently discovered all the sweet ladspa effects in Linux and with I could use them with the amp and cab.

nice sovtek, I need a new head. I have a Krank rev jr but I dont know bout this thing...on low practice in room volume it sounds great but as soon as you start to turn it up it sounds hallow and too 'messy'. Need something good for the metals with midrange, any suggestions?

Thanks! After shipping and taxes it set me back about 800 CDN for the head and about 250 CDN for the cabinet + speaker. It really does sound great. Probably the most satisfied I've been with an amp.

I really am a fan of the Rex. I didn't know much about speakers except that I really liked an eminence legend in an empress cab. I just listened to the demos available on the eminence website and picked whatever seemed to have the best warmth and high end clarity. This was the Rex.

yo! I haven't been in a band in some time. Last real band was mainly noiserock. Nowadays I'm more on the shoegaze side of things. Just went back to school with a full time job on my back so I don't seem to have much time for awesomeness =/

Killer amp! Red Fang use all solid state Sunn's and their live sound is awesome and unique.

Also, I've recently finished a little electronics project. I'm a big rookie at these things but it's alot of fun. Previous to this I had built five Bazzfuss's for myself and friends and one Fuzz Face. I had an extra set of bc108 transistors and this crappy Epiphone my brother gave me. I only use the neck pickup anyway so I thought why not throw a FF in there? And here it is!

I really like how it turned out. I expected it to be a bit of a joke (and it may be to some!) but the more I fool around with it the more I think it's neato. I learned plenty in building it. The main thing I learned is that I still have so much to learn.

I thought it would be nothing more than a novelty item when I was done but it's actually really cool. That's a DiMarzio Super Distortion (1979 for VINTAGE MOJO lol) and the fuzz is thick. The feedback is completely nuts. I think I've got a little too much gain on tap? With the fuzz cranked, fiddling with the guitar's volume knob makes it go completely wild. It can be hard to tame but amid the chaos cool stuff can be found. Weird harmonic shifting of chords, crazyass pig squeals, motor boat oscillations and best of all you can sing into the pickup and harmonize with the strings then dial the wacky oscillation. I'm way more stoked on the sound of the finished project than I thought I might be and at this point I wish it was in a nicer guitar. I might even use this thing for one small overdub when we go in the studio next week.

I also just finished a mod on my Gibson SG Junior (although not as crazy as Pa's above). I've always wanted a bigsby on my junior, but the wrap around tail piece just isn't compatible. Rather than drilling a new ABR bridge into the body, I found a Tone Pros II locking pigtail (AVT2G) that fits the junior (really its for PRS guitars) and modified it with roller saddles from a cheap ABR import. I really had no idea if it would work, but surprised it all fit together (with a little filing on some of the saddles). The AVT2 is a lot taller than the original tail piece, especially with the rollers, but string action is playable with the studs screwed all the way down. Now the strings can be properly intonated, and won't get stuck on the bridge when using the bigsby.
