is that the skinny, hunched-over older guy that shuffles around and looks at everything over the top of his IBM/NASA-engineer glasses since they're down to the tip of his nose? There were a lot of social retards there, but that guy was just creepy. He mostly stood in front of the 3-screen Darius cab near the escalator.

There was another guy there that was kind of weird. He was wearing a weight-lifters shirt and had a really hairy back - he smelled SO bad. He was talking to himself the whole time and making wild gestures anytime there was a big explosion on screen. I'm kinda creeped out that I share the same interest as him.

Sounds like me, to be honest. I mainly go to HEY to watch guys play since there's so many great players on a variety of games, plus there are less-crowded and cheaper places in town to play the same games. My personal favorite HEY patrons:

Guwange Girl, a female who seems obsessed with the game. I've seen her there many times over the years, standing by the cab watching folks play while mumbling to herself. I see her play every now and then and she clears the game with over 25 million which is better than most of us here.

Another cool guy is Hairy Palms, a guy who suffers from a condition that is his namesake, but he trucks DDP DFK, clearing the Ura loop with over 700 billion.

Finally, there's the Garegga Queen, one of the fruitiest-looking men to ever drop a coin into a cab. He wears all sorts of flaming attire and doesn't seem like he's particularly interested in the opposite sex, but holy god does he crush Battle Garegga. Word has it he holds a world record or two.

Anyways, Akai Katana...last week there were 3 cabs but now it's 4 at HEY, which is pretty unprecedented. Must be doing alright.

Ahahahaha, I've had my run in with this girl at more than a few occasions. We used to play at the same Leisure Land way back in the day and she would always constantly stare at me and what I was playing (usually Ibara Kuro). I figured it was just because I was foreign, although most people try to hide it a bit better, heh. After awhile I just waited for her to do her Guwange runs and watched her play. Eventually she got pissed at me for some reason and tried to shoo me away. We've had a few "disagreements" since then, she's a weird-ass girl, although I always give her a smirk when I see her at HEY. Never really understood what her deal was.

That's most likely Kamui himself. He's known to be a complete weirdo.

Heh, I think we need a thread split with "arcade personalities" as the subject. :P

Good laugh reading those arcade personalities, should be a topic if there isn't one yet, shit is hilarious.
Just imagine a reality TV show that follows the lives of obsessed shmup players such as ourselves...

Apart from Streets of Rage 2 which is all round less tedious and better paced throughout.

have seen a flamboyant emo looking dude of questionable sexuality destroy dualplay Ikaruga a few times tho? usually has a girl (?) by his side in loli attire..

ed: oh and skykid you can keep flaiming all you want..

Yea that was a dude.

I've gone to HEY a few times a month for years and have seen only two girl regulars: the aforementioned Guwange Girl and this mousy girl that can clobber Ketsui. I think this may be the legendary lady who holds a mighty Progear score. Sometimes I see her chatting with Garegga Queen, no doubt trading tips on moisturizers and eyeliners.

Mods, feel free to clip some of the OT stuff about Nerds of the Arcade for its own thread, there's plenty more to be shared and I don't want to derail from Akai Katana much further.

Some photos I found on the web:

Left to right: YUJ, mYU, oroshi, Kamui, SWY.

Host #1, Karapikachiu (?), ISO, TAC, host #2.

Unfortunately Kamui's boots aren't well seen. He's also wearing a sparkling silver tie together with a cloth collar.

If you want to enjoy unique clothing styles you should go check out the book "Fruits".

http://www.amazon.com/Fruits-Shoichi-Aoki/dp/0714840831

Also a must read is the book "Arcade Mania". It covers interviews and a look into the lifes of some japanese pro arcade gamers like Kenta Cho and Clover TAC but also more obscure ones like the queen of crane games.

Great thread. The descriptions/accounts reminded me of when we used to have decent arcades in the UK and you'd always see the same eccentric characters hanging around.

This thread is amazing. Do you think these weirdos have jobs? Or do they get Japanese unemployment and just talk to themselves by their favorite coinop machine all day?

I've seen some weirdos whenever I'm in tokyo, but they're always on the train, never really noticed anyone out of the ordinary in the arcades, but I usually don't frequent akihabara.

One of my old friends (he has some sort of disorder but is no longer in the ward) used to hang around the local video store (where there were games) and put on a long skirt.

Unfortunately he doesn't seem to have a blog or a homepage where more photos could be seen… I only know his Twitter account but he evidently doesn't write much.

Yup, sure looks like it. Somehow I feel let down...

Anyway Kamui ain't got nothing on my local arcade crowd.

First click this  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tT52louJLi4

My local arcade.

A lot of characters reside there.
The character above is Dragon aka Akuma aka Ken Malmstein. Performing in the arcade as Ken in full wig etc.
He since went on to carve up his face with a knife to make himself look more like his other favourite character: Akuma.
He likes fighting games and he likes fighting.
He's also a Shaolin Master.
I love this vid!:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppetzLaD ... re=related

Image
Chunkis & Ken
-----------------------
There's Izanami
Image
Image

-----------------------
Then there's Mr Hong Kong, who likes to carry a nice Clutch Bag to go with slightly feminine ensembles.

There's Mr Karate Chop - a 6ft 5 guy in basketball gear who is perhaps more nuts than Dragon. He plays fighters but he really gets going when he stands and watches fighter matches. Randomly shouting out and doing karate chops in the air, generally scaring the hell out of the young boys in the crowd :D .

Then there's young Mr Brazil who watches fighting matches whilst doing all the freaky moves that the characters do in the game. His best is the white bendable rubber character in Third Strike.

Then there's KOLA - Neo Empire Mascot
Image
Great Guy! He sometimes runs down the street waving a big stick when he's having one of his mad moments, but its cool 8)

Then there's Mo. Bicycle thief and all round lunatic. Got barred from the arcade for fighting with his mate Wayne and having his head shoved through the 'Italian Job' slot machine upstairs.

and there's more
I haven't even scratched the surface

Wow I think I saw this person in like, one out of the three times I visited HEY when I was in Japan. There are really that few female regulars at a major arcade like that? Well pity I didn't see Guwange girl either to stare at a gaijin like me playing shmups

I love Kamui and Risu. Last time I saw them at KET's they were cuddling and shit. So awesome.

I even got Risu to go I-BA-RA out loud by typing it that way in the stream, right after telling him it's my favorite game. Best stream ever :3

Arcade personalities eh....

I've seen a few while cruising around the old game center haunts in Akiba. There was Gradius Girl in Try way back in 2001 who used to continuably wipe the joystick with a cloth while destroying Gradius, literally loop after loop. I remember this guy in HEY who always used to be on Fantasy Zone with a bottle of Green Tea as refreshment. He knew the safe spots so well that he used to take regular swigs of the stuff while playing.

Closer to home we used to have a few geezers hanging around our arcades. Most memorable was a guy we dubbed Killer King as he used to live and breathe Killer Instinct. Fair play he was one of the best players I ever saw on that game but he did used to hang around outside our local arcade for it to open in the morning. He even used to adopt a certain stance at the machine when going into an Ultra combo, almost as a reflex action. Another guy seemed to be an habitual offender and broke into the arcade out of hours and proceeded to turn on and play Sega Rally until the police turned up. They even let him finish his game...bless
