Time to settle this once and for all!

Re: What's Irem's best non-R-Type shooter?
Would've gone with In the Hunt, but went with X-Multiply, it just feels so right, and so dreadful (the atmosphere that is) like Irem is known for. Really was a hard choice after playing In the Hunt on the PS 2 days ago, but X-Multiply is a game I love so much, yet can't spend a fortune on.
Just the idea of being inside some persons body battling aliens that are infecting that person just seems so gruesome, and so fun. Good topic, can't wait to read some of the responses.

A proper sequel from the likes of Irem regarding it's stellar "In the Hunt" M-92 powered PCB would've been nice to play in the arcades. In the Hunt PCB conversion kits were definitely distributed in limited numbers for the U.S. arcade market. I have some fond memories of playing it at my local arcades back in the mid-1990s.

Clearly In the Hunt, I just love this PCB. Gameplay is okayish, but the GFX is godlike <3. It's one of the reasons I collect M92 PCBs...

Yep, X-Multiply is one of the most atmospheric shmups ever made IMO. The graphics and the audio mix so well. Dragon Breed comes a close 2nd for me due to the ingenuity of the design (and again, beautiful graphics and audio design) but I can never quite forgive Irem for that bastard penultimate stage.Bloodreign wrote:Would've gone with In the Hunt, but went with X-Multiply, it just feels so right, and so dreadful (the atmosphere that is) like Irem is known for. Armed Police Unit Gallop, which plays nothing like R-Type.

Cosmic Cop, which you forgot.
And you do realize Gun Hoki had an English release, right? It's called Mystic Riders. Fix yer list.

Of course, that's just an opinion.

Re: What's Irem's best non-R-Type shooter?
Good poll, we needed something like this. I voted for... Dragon Breed!
Although it was a very close battle between X-Multiply and Dragon Breed, I still like the variation the latter gives you better. X-Multiply is great and has a deep atmosphere,
but beside Dragon Breed it feels "just like another of those Bio shooters".

I didn't know Irem had other shooters, just other quirky titles.

That you shoehorn this in as your rationale offends me.(we'll just say Gallop is part of the R-Type series, and that Fighbird doesn't count since it's a licensed title).

I voted for Dragon Breed.

Just curious...was Irem's "Underwater Unit" meant to be a sequel to "In the Hunt"? The similarities are just to coincidental although UU was a pseudo 3D submarine shmup hybrid

Image Fight II: Innovation ran out after the original but the sequel offers the same lessons with much better presentation.

In the Hunt.
X-Multiply is a close second, but the lush visuals of ItH give it the edge.

I also voted for In The Hunt.
(Going back much further back though, I also still enjoy playing Moon Patrol [Irem Corporation licensed to Williams Electronics] since the Champion courses still give quite a challenge even though I can one life clear the Beginner course.)

Kaitei Daisensou!!
X-multiply is a close 2nd for the trippy visuals.
Image Fight II 3rd because I did not think they could make something harder than the original!

Sad that there's not much love for Mr Heli. That said, I'm not sure it really qualifies as a shmup under the usually restrictive classification of the genre used by this board.

Re: What's Irem's best non-R-Type shooter?
It's been eligible in the top 25 poll since forever, so I guess it does qualify. Not that anyone besides me ever voted for it anyway...E. Randy Dupre wrote:Sad that there's not much love for Mr Heli. However, it's a fantastic game, and really underappreciated. Playing the Heli in R-Type Final is a hell of a lot of fun, too.
