DOJ and Ketsui- how far can you make it?

I've been putting some time into these, and i'm not that great at all, but i've finally made some progress on DOJ. I was able to make it to the stage 4 boss, which is the same place I can get on Ketsui. Of course it was harder...

I know there are some real masters here, but I also know there's a lot of folks like myself. So, how far can you guys get on Cave's most notoriously difficult games??

When DDP-DOJ PCB was shown at the 2010 California Extreme show for the first time ever, both shmuppers of Kei and Dave K. were the top DOJ scorers. Dave K.'s score was easily over 20,000,000+ points and got to Stage 4 on a single credit. It was cool to watch him do his shmup magic. I said that I really wasn't that good at playing it myself since DDP-DOJ is generally considered a harder arcade shmup PCB title to master than say DDP-DFK for instance -- just am a casual DDP-DOJ player myself. Kei's scores on the DDP-DOJ PCB was in the neighborhood of 14,000,000+ points easily with his 1 credit shmup session. Kei's name dominated the Top 5 rankings DDP-DOJ high score list for the entire day on 1st day of the CAX show, Saturday, July 17th 2010.

Ketsui stage 4 boss, started playing about 2 weeks ago. DOJ stage 3 boss, started playing 2 days ago.

Right now I'm only playing for a clear and not bothering with the scoring any more than I need to in order to get a quick extend.

I think these are cave's best vertical games, but I haven't played them all.

I have to disagree on that one. I have much less trouble on ESPGaluda II. Now the last boss is a different story.
Still, i'm stuck on the same boss as the others. Last boss before the last stage. Blah.

You know, DOJ was the first manic shooter I ever played, and that was back in 2007. I was overwhelmed! I actually got rid of it because it pissed me off so much. Then I bought it again. Then almost sold it again! Finally, I got a grip on it, and now enjoy it. But what a terrible game to be introduced into this sub-genre.

I haven't really played Daioujou at all... credit fed through arcade mode one back in 2006, but that's it.

Ketsui... haven't played it all that much, but I can get to the stage 4 midboss... definitely a tough game, but it's pretty thrilling.

Can get to Level 3 Boss in DOJ, been playing about a week. Game is pretty damn hard, especially if you use those hypers.
Haven't tried Ketsui.

i've played them both loads, but am no good - mid way through stage 4 is the best i can do on DOJ, and the start of stage 5 on ketsui, i always try and score playing ketsui, but never in DOJ.

Granted, I haven't studied Ketsui much, so the fourth boss always slaps my shit.

2-3 DOJBL, 1-ALL DOJWL (haven't tried looping this, not a fan of WL's second loop life system), 2-1 Ketsui. Been playing both of these pretty regularly since roundabout the Ketsui port release... I had a tougher time initially getting the 1-ALL with DOJ, but going for the loops seems a different story. I can get the bees in the first three stages of DOJ pretty consistently now, but Ketsui's loop conditions are so damn harsh; only made it to the loop once and even then I didn't make it to 2-1's boss.

Been spending some time on and off just repeatedly playing those stages so that when I get to them I'll be able to survive way more. Still haven't done full runs in a long while though.

Final stage in both with a shitty score. But these are my least played 360 ports, I'm not a fan of the unforgiving score system in either game. I don't really have fun playing either.

Ketsui is just balls hard as it is, I've enjoyed the DS game way more, and the music in DOJ keeps me coming back for punishment.

1-ALL'd both labels of DOJ, just playing for survival and bombing everything with Shotia.
Middle of stage 5 in Ketsui. Those clone ships always get me.

ketsui's scoring system is great, very accessible compared to DOJ's strict chaining imo. in what way do you find it unforgiving?

Stage 3 mid-boss for both Admittedly, I don't spend as much time with those two as MushiFutari, but arrrr!

I really like the scoring system in Ketsui. When it is properly utilised it can make the game a lot more manageable (but hey, I can only get to stage 3 midboss so ).

Mid stage 3 for both DOJ and Ketsui. But to be fair that seems to be the point most people can reach in most shmups as it's usually where the difficulty start to dramatically rank up.

I think stage 3 boss or maybe the start of stage 4 is the furthest I've gotten in DOJ. I've been playing white label for a few years now too

Before I sold my copy of DOJ few years ago, I could get to the 4th stage boss on my best runs and could chain up until the middle of stage 3. That was a satisfying game to play well. I should pick up another copy sometime.
