R-Types on the PSP/PS3

Post by indutrial »

Has anyone else downloaded R-Types from the PSN, for the PSP or PS3? I wanted to know if there's a defect in the game that causes the left-hand edge of the screen to get cut off in the port of R-Type II. It's immediately noticeable in the game's intro (the laser beam burning the game title into the background). To be sure, the game is perfectly playable, but I'm wondering if I should just re-download it. What the hell would cause something like that? Should I have a certain setting changed on the PSP's PS1 emulation menu? The original R-Type's port, in comparison, has no such defect.

If anyone else notices this, let me know.

Thanks.

Isn't it cropped on the PSX as well? Reportedly this was the case with Image Fight (its native resolution not fitting your average SDTV) on PlayStation and Saturn. You should be able to adjust it manually in the pause menu.

It's not cropped on the PS1. Vertically, you have the option of either a translucent status bar (entire playfield is always visible), or a reduced viewing area (manually scroll up and down to see the top and bottom of the playfield. Horizontally you can always see everything, including the title screen.

The Image Fight / X-Multiply Arcade Gears set is cropped on all four sides (both the PS1 and Saturn versions). You can never see the entire playfield in either game, despite being able to move the image around in the pause menu.

Are you able to play it without input lag? Every time I boot up the R-Types PSN download on my PS3, it has close to a half-second of input lag making it completely unplayable.

Or is there a work around or setting I can tweak to avoid this?

As far as I know there is no way around the PS3's laggy emulation. I've tried component and HDMI connections, and noticed no difference. Even the PSP's emulation is nowhere as bad as the PS3's.

We need to write some emails to Sony to get this fixed.

Is it bad on a CRT SDTV too?

I haven't tried it myself, but my friend reported it's just as bad.

I'll have to give it a shot tonight.
