Mega Man Zero- Any good?
Was thinking about buying the DS collection. How are these games? I played a bit of the first one, and it seemed pretty cool.

Re: Mega Man Zero- Any good?
From what I remember, they're all pretty cool. Better than X7, X8 and the DS games.

The good: Best bosses out of any MM
The bad: they're GBA games
I you don't mind having to be hesitant with your dash jumps until you've memorized everything because of a cramped screen go for it.

Re: Mega Man Zero- Any good?
I finished the first 3 games and they're great. Not sure if it's good to play on a DS though.
Re: Mega Man Zero- Any good?
Has anyone tried the DS collection yet ? I wonder how they dealt with the different screen resolutions. Do these played with borders (just like original GBA games on the DS) or have they resized the play area and/or the sprites ??

Re: Mega Man Zero- Any good?
They play like GBA games on the DS. Changes are minimal. They removed some curse words, the game displays on the top screen while the bottom screen displays art, and supposedly slightly better music.

Re: Mega Man Zero- Any good?
If the DS collection plays faithfully to the GBA originals then you should pick it up. Getting all four of those games for thirty bucks is a steal when there's really not a dud among them. Both Mega Man Zero 1 and 2 put up a pretty tough challenge if you dont use the cyber elves. I always thought Mega Man Zero 3 was the best in the series while 4 was probably the weakest.

There's little/no slowdown in the DS collection

Re: Mega Man Zero- Any good?
I think my main problem with the Zero series was that the rooms were much smaller (relative to the size of the sprites), so all four games felt very claustrophobic for me. Other than that, they're all brilliant and definitely worth a playthrough.
Re: Mega Man Zero- Any good?
Cool, I didn't know this was out.
I had MMZ 1-3 on GBA and sold off 2-3. I only really played MMZ 1, but it was quite excellent. A nice thing about having the GBA versions is that you could play them on the GameCube's GBA module if you had one.
If this DS collection is only $30 as you say, I might get it anyway. Thanks for the heads-up.

Re: Mega Man Zero- Any good?
I just bought this today after trading in my old PS3 at Gamestop and I'm loving it so far. Like gct, I have 1-3 on GBA and loved them but now I can get rid of them for this collection. So far, it's a hell of a lot of fun as I haven't played these games in a few years. I'd highly recommend and I'd get it quick as it seems it isn't available everywhere (places like Best Buy, etc.). I haven't seen it anywhere but Gamestop so far.

I ordered this a day or so ago. I've been trying to play the first one on an emulator, but I think it's buggy. I can't get that blonde girl to talk to me. Just like real life!
This is made by the same folks who made MM 9, right?

^^^Inti Creates did the Zero series and I am fairly sure they did Mega Man 9 as well.

Yes, Inti made all of the Zero games, both the ZX games, and most recently 9-10.

Re: Mega Man Zero- Any good?
I'm a fan, the first one was a good concept. The second and third were more considerate in their risk/reward factor. It made sense in the sequels to try and get a great ranking because you were rewarded with an upgrade. Own MMZ4 as well but never got into it. Loved 2 and 3 though.
The DS collection would be preferable to the GBA carts in one way. Playing the GBA games in a DS means you have to use A to jump and B to attack, considering the finger acrobatics with right and left triggers this is hand cramping hell. IF the DS collection allows the buttons to be remapped (I dunno to Y and B like the SNES Megaman games) then its infinitely the superior version(to play on DS).
Of course for PSP owners emulation offers the best option thanks to the beautiful screen.

Re: Mega Man Zero- Any good?
Why would playing on a PSP offer better visuals than the original? The PSP's screen resolution isn't enough to display GBA graphics without scaling artifacts, so I imagine it must look pretty crappy, with possible input lag thrown in on top of it.

All-around upgrade, period.UnscathedFlyingObject wrote:and supposedly slightly better music.
Yes it does. So did the originals.JusteZero wrote:IF the DS collection allows the buttons to be remapped (I dunno to Y and B like the SNES Megaman games) then its infinitely the superior version(to play on DS).
"Beautiful screens?" You're far better off playing MMZ on a Game Boy Player than trying to emulate GBA games on a PSP, period.
Re: Mega Man Zero- Any good?
Glad to hear the collection allows a remap, the originals DO, but they dont allow you to remap to play on a DS(that would be amazing foresight on capcoms part tho) which is the reason this collection is a necessity if you lost your GBA.lgb wrote:Yes it does. So did the originals.

And yeah I'd play these on PSP WAY before I wipe 6 years worth of dust off my gamecube and track down a obscure attachment just to have the torture of playing MMZ with a gamecube controller, tried that with the GC MMX collection, NO THANKS.

Or you could get the Hori GC gamepad or an adapter that allows you plug in the PS2 controller of your choice.JusteZero wrote:And yeah I'd play these on PSP WAY before I wipe 6 years worth of dust off my gamecube and track down a obscure attachment just to have the torture of playing MMZ with a gamecube controller, tried that with the GC MMX collection, NO THANKS.
I play MMZ's with the Saturn-style PS2 pad. Oh yes.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

The Hori pad is an improvement, but it's too bad it didn't shift that god-awful botton layout around as much as it ought to have. I probably ought to shop for an adapter one of these days...Ghegs wrote:Or you could get the Hori GC gamepad or an adapter that allows you plug in the PS2 controller of your choice.

Re: Mega Man Zero- Any good?
I've been playing the "easy" mode on this, so I can kind of just play through them, and then sink my teeth into the original versions later.
The first one was disappointing. I thought it was just OK. The level design was weak, and lots of going over the same areas(which made for repetition). So, I was a little let down.
I'm playing the second one now, and this is way more like it. Stage design is MUCH better. And you actually have stages, rather than the going over the same areas that you did in the first one. Bosses are cooler and more interesting to fight also.
How's the third and fourth ones?

Re: Mega Man Zero- Any good?
Third game has even better level design/variety, each mission is varied. Bosses are very cool in this one... I should note that the last boss fight is the most epic one in zero series even story-wise. About fourth one? The endgame was a big letdown, the story did end nicely (and cut off it's ties so there was no place for a direct sequel in same age), the gameplay was a bit better, that's in short.evil_ash_xero wrote:I've been playing the "easy" mode on this, so I can kind of just play through them, and then sink my teeth into the original versions later.

Unless I'm missing something, the collection *doesn't* allow you to remap to the DS's extra two buttons - the X and Y - and this is, I think, what was being asked.lgb wrote:Yes it does. So did the originals.JusteZero wrote:IF the DS collection allows the buttons to be remapped (I dunno to Y and B like the SNES Megaman games) then its infinitely the superior version(to play on DS).
It's a stupid thing for Capcom to have ignored and one that I'm pretty hugely pissed off by. The biggest problem with the Zero games, for me, has always been having to use the shoulder buttons for dash and the alternate attack, meaning that you often find yourself having to make uncomfortable claws of your hands, and one of the reasons why I was looking forwards to the DS collection so much - in fact, the only reason I bought it - was because I presumed that it'd make use of the four face buttons.
Re: Mega Man Zero- Any good?
You can map the X and Y buttons in the collection. Go to the button configuration screen as normal and look at the touch screen below. It'll have an option to set the X and Y buttons to emulate whatever action is currently mapped to either of the other buttons.

Re: Mega Man Zero- Any good?
Okay, cheers. In my defense, it's not massively clear in-game, because apart from when you're making that change, the bottom screen doesn't serve any purpose.
Actually, having just tried it, I can map the dash and sub-weapon to X and Y as I choose, yet the sub-weapon doesn't appear to work. Any idea why? The dash comes out fine, whichever of the two buttons I set it to, but I can't get the sub-weapon to do anything when i set it to either of them.

Re: Mega Man Zero- Any good?
Do you have "Attack Mode" set to Type A? If so, you'll have to hold the subweapon button while pressing the main weapon button in order to use the subweapon.
This sucks, so most people change it to Type B as soon as possible, as this actually works like you'd expect (and lets you charge both main and subweapons at once.)

Re: Mega Man Zero- Any good?
Well, that's quite embarrassing. I've owned the GBA carts for a while now and I never realised that Attack Mode was a manually configurable option on that screen - it changes as you change the regular button config, so I presumed it was automatic and didn't know that you could press down to set it yourself.
