Good point on thesuperkillerxxx's mention of From Software is of note.

Really, I think their most popular "cult" game is the Armored Core series. I mean, people like it, but only few appreciate it the way it should be appreciated.

I don't know what kind of following it has but the neglect of Thrasher:Skate and Destroy is IMO one of the great crimes of gaming. It's got an awesome old school hip hop soundtrack and actually captures the feel and spirit of skateboarding. The fact that Tony Hawk has gotten a half dozen sequels and there will never be a proper follow up to Thrasher makes me want to stab stab stab...

YES! I fucking love that game. Although I didn't think there were more people than myself. Nice to know I'm part of a cult now.

I can't wait until Operation Flashpoint 2...that's going to be HOT.

In the meantime, a lot of people have been buying Virtual Battlespace and importing the Operation Flashpoint data into it. Improved engine, models, graphics, etc. Expensive, though :(

There's also tons of awesome mods (calling artillery strikes is great) and patches, including a neato directx9 patch that makes the water look SICK :)

I'm sort of out of the PC scene at this point (in fact, I've been saddled with a Mac). As a result, I haven't heard much about OF2. However, a serious graphical overhaul (they weren't very good even at the time) and some collision detection bug fixing is all that game needs to be perfect.

OK, why the heck hasn't anyone mentioned any of the Contra games?? :?

Seriously, the original still has a cult following, as does Contra III on the SNES.

Doukutsu Monogatari ~ The Cave Story for the PC. Check out the Insert Credit forums for more on this game. The whole forum is one giant Doukutsu cult.

And while I'm thinking of that game....Super Metroid!! 8)

No. IMO, That game was horrible. The only thing that makes it tolerable is the Old-skool hip-hop sound. Everything else about the game was feces.[/i]

Shmups are cult gaming personified. For the most part, they are games with a moderate level of popularity with a small but fiercely loyal fanbase.

In my opinion, the Castlevania series has a strong cult following. Final Fantasy seems to be in the vein of "cult" level games, but I consider Final Fantasy too popular to be "cultish". I would argue that a lot of RPGs tend to have some cult level to them as most mainstream gamers ignore them. I think RPG series like Ys and Shin Megami Tensei tend to have cult-like followings.

Having 99% percent of the main stream gaming press call the Final Fantasy "Greatest RPG Ever!" sucks. Seriously Random Goddamn Encounter are not fun at all. Seriously, Not fun at all.

i was going to answer but didn't have time so i figured "asshole kneejerk reaction" was appropriate.

suckerpunch: sly 1, 2, 3, and Rocket something on n64

looking glass: thief 1, 2, system shock 2 (sharing staff from 1 as well), terra nova

nippon ichi: phantom brave and many others (but honestly, the knowledge of more is beyond my field)

atlus: persona, and thus shin megami tensei, sky gunner (ps2), pretty much all of the saturn/psx psikyo/cave releases, deSpiria (on dc, which still looks cooler than shit), and this is the tip of the iceberg
I have no sig whatsoever.
