You'll note however that Sonic does not in any way resemble a spaceship and aside from wasting precious rings he doesn't fire bullets of sorts - in fact he doesn't even use guns (that's reserved for Shadow the Hedgehog). How would a projectile-less hedgehog survive in the world of sprays, waves and "SHOOT THE CORE"?
Simple. Be The Bullet. (It was either that or "Sonic Shoot", so...)
Currently I have a glorified engine test comprising of one level (one half of a level, even) and a bonus stage - the graphics and music are placeholders reminiscent of the arcade games of the 80's, you're ranked according to how many rings you acquire and how many badniks you bash*, and there's even a cheat code if you do really well*. There are few days left until the official opening of SAGE '10 (August 8th is the deadline to be exact), so I wanted the opinions and feedback of people well-versed in shoot-em-ups. Do you find dashing through bullets ala Alien Soldier to be fair, or do you think players should be punished for even trying to touch bullets? Is the level design sufficient for a first level (easing the player into the game)? What's your high score? What else would you add to the level (beside a boss!)? Do you think the game is too slow as is? Would you like to see more integration of Sonic design elements into the game (e.g floating platforms leading to hidden routes, spike bridges, destructible tunnels, shields, etc)?
*Or not! For the masochistic there is a special rank earned by having no points accrued from defeating enemies.
