The market has bottomed out, somewhat...especially the higher you go. The expat banker type flat has dropped a good 1/3 in the last 5 years (and will likely not go up). Cheaper apartments as well, a lot cheaper. Until recently, you also had "key money" (google), and still have 2 months deposit, plus 1 month you have to pay for the locator. These days you're looking at 4 months up front (w/ not all coming back) to move. It used to be 6.
maybe the difference is in the wages? what does an average joe schmoe driving a forklift at some warehouse earn in japan?
Very generally speaking, graduates in Tokyo start out at somewhere around 220,000 yen per month, and will make an extra 10,000 yen per month from there. There's a bonus twice a year which is probably to the tune of 400,000 to 600,000 (closer to 400,000 these days). Note that the hours are grueling, so there's little time for extra income.

I don't know what minimum wage is, but hourly jobs tend to pay about 800 - 900 yen per hour, unless of course you're sucking cock. Relatively speaking, I think those girls make very little money when you consider they take a shot in the mouth from most likely an unsavory old chap a few times an hour.
Any areas specifically, and generally how removed/rural is this "countryside" land?
The further from Tokyo the cheaper (until you hit ski resort areas).... or Osaka.

Tokyo has rarely ever not been the most expensive city in the world. Even when the yen is weak, it has always outranked London (although I'm having trouble finding charts), so before you guys keep bitching about how pricey London is, remember that the scale usually takes in average salary of locals (not fucking English teachers working half time)... and Japan's is very low compared to the high cost of living.

On that note, land outside of Kantou is almost free. It is the most lop-sided thing I've ever seen, and the fact that depopulation continually rams it in the country's ass, the countryside is what suffers (and gets even cheaper).
I've read (obviously not seen) that Saitama and the other neighboring prefectures are somewhere around an hour to a couple hours by bullet train to Tokyo. So that would make anything much further out a pretty much impossible commute...I have no idea about a possible solution, other than "why can't telecommuting be a bigger thing" :|

there are two sides to it, we also have legalised slave labour (aka guest workers) from asia and the poorer EU countries, they do shit work for absolute pennies and are treated worse than animals :?
We're all slaves under capitalism as far as I'm concerned.
I really wish there was a decent global standard for wages so that some countries don't get abused, but someone getting paid a decent salary for their work shouldn't complain. Anyone who doesn't want to work has the choice of go live in a mountain or something.
"Sooo, what was it that you consider a 'good salary' for a man to make?"
"They should at least make 100K to have a good life"

Absolutely not. There is no concept of "time is money" here. As such, 60 minutes is the "standard" commute. Plenty of people commuting 90 minutes, and some up to 120. Thanks to commuter trains, there are plenty of people commuting from Saitama, Chiba, etc. daily, on express trains. They travel just as fast as normal ones, but only stopping ever 5 or so stations. 1 hour by Shinkansen and you're in Atami. 2 hours and you're basically in Nagoya... these are generally too far to commute. Although I do have a friend that commutes 70 minutes by Shinkansen about 3-4 times a week. That doesn't include him getting to the station (by car) and getting to his office from Tokyo station.

One of my old bosses went from Fujisawa to Suitenguumae (pretty close to Tokyo/Akihabara/etc) daily, and the trains were so crowded, he ONLY worked the early shift, getting him there at 7:30 (leaving his place about 5:30).

Long ago I decided to forfeit a large part of my salary to be able to take a quick train or my bicycle to work.

Thanks for fixing me up with some specific figures. Put that way it's no surprise. And yeah, I don't blame the economy for sticking to the "work in person" idea, even though I hope one of these days telecommuting could be a bigger thing for reasons like this. We're not there yet, technologically, though.

Hello All - New member here and I just thought as another Tokyo resident I'd throw in my opinion. I live in Adachi-ku (it's Tokyo) but the next city over in in Saitama. I've been here for 6 years, and the economy is noticeably getting worse. Recycle shops are overflowing with junk in my area from people trying to offload things they dont need for a bit of extra cash. This being the case, I've been able to pick up a lot of great deals lately.. 8) I saw today that McDonalds is hiring for 900 yen an hour now, when this time last year the jobs started at 1200 yen an hour. Also something I've noticed lately are that there are a LOT of empty apartments lately. Not sure if people are moving back in with their parents, or going back out to the countryside, but there are noticeably more vacancies. It seems that not many people have much of a disposable income lately. Its been really great for me that the yen has dropped to 85 yen to the dollar, but terrible for everyone else. However, with all of this being said, it's odd to see that theres still so much construction going on... New buildings and remodels seem to be going on everywhere. Perhaps the government is trying to stimulate the economy with a construction boom...?

Anyhow - Not sure where I was going with all of this.. Just my report from the field.

Yeah, this is crazy. As per before, my last apartment was willing to whack about 30% off our rent if we stayed. That's how shitty the housing market is. Yet, they keep building stuff. :/

This will seemingly never end. Japan's way of keeping people in work: make buildings of very questionable quality. Then again, if my city got flattened twice I'd probably not care about making buildings that lasted either.
