Recommended Win Doujin Games (everything but Shoot'em ups) ?

Post by Fudoh »

I finally have some time to try a few Doujin games on my ION nettop. Does anybody have a few tips on what to try outside of the shmups genre ? I've run a few classics (Spelunky, Cave Story, Rosenkreuzstilette), but would like input what's good out there. Action or Puzzle prefered. No Visual novels ;)

Elepaper action is quite fun too

Demon Hunter Mai (if you like a cuteyfied Valis ripoff)

Magical Hop (cute little platformer)

EDIT: Just browsed a few folders on my comp: you might also like to give Nanikura a try

Had to check this out, with you being a fellow Falcom appreciator. Good stuff indeed, might have to give this a play just for the neat style.

Some fun games recommended in that thread. If you liked Cave Story, check out Ikachan.
Also, watch this and that.

Some of my absolute favorite freeware games are found here:

That guy is awesome. I especially recommend Flail, An Untitled Story, and the Jumper series.

Two very fun flash games that I sometimes play when I'm especially bored are Canabalt and Dice Wars.

Toki No Akuma (ときのあくま)

http://www.h7.dion.ne.jp/~icewind/yuki- ... okiaku.htm

It's from the creator of Diadra Empty. You'll need japanese settings but it's pretty nice. It's an action game using a Gradius-like power up system and, Pedo Bear aside (yes...), looks extremely good.

Touhou Mystical Chain (by Circle LionHeart)

I forgot the genre of this one. Somehow like Toki No Akuma (you go through several scenarios, beating enemies, chaining and comboing until you meet the typical over the top loli-boss) but you can switch between two characters, the music is really good (if you can stomach orchestral Touhou arranges) and it looks really professional.

Armed Seven and Gigantic Army (ASTROPORT, they are both at DLsite if I'm not wrong): Manly mecha shooting action in the vein of Turrican/Assault Suit Leynos/etc.

This doesn't fit the bill of a "doujin" game but it's one of the few western games I felt it somehow has a similar aura: Shatter (I bought the Steam version on the summer sale)

Breakout-like game with an awesome soundtrack and nice graphics somewhat inspired in Rez but without the mindfuck. It has some nice STG touches with the Shard storm and being able to turn point items into bullet barrages.

edit: Oh, and Vanguard Princess (made by an ex-Capcom employee) if you can stomach all-female casts using loli assists/mascots.

edit2: Look forward for Recettear, the english version is coming in September and it's an absolutely hilarious and silly game about running an item shop in your typical fantasy-like world. Capitalism, Ho!

If you liked Mega Man 2, you can kill some time with its boss battle thing.

Shame on us, we all failed to mention Bunny must die.

Is that the game's true name? For some reason I always remembered it as "Lilian Fantasy".

Forgot to mention if you can try to get your hands on Fortune summoners by Lizsoft...it took them 4 years to make it but its well worth it.

Trying hard not to sound like a dick here, but ... links please :(

Some of these sound great but when I try to google them all I get are youtube playthroughs and dodgy torrents.
