Sony FW900 CRT Monitor 16:10

Post by Rob79 »

I just bought a Sony FW900 Monitor for $50 bucks locally.
I see on ebay these things sell for $500-$1000 !
If no one knows, this is a 24" 16:10 CRT flat panel Monitor.
Supposedly, it sold for $3500 new. Last made in 2004.

The picture quality is out of this world ! In only using 1024x768 resolution with 85hz refresh rate.
My video card needs severe upgrading ! :|

Heres a thread I found on it with all info/specs .

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=952788

Anyone else here own one ?

The guy I bought it from got fired and his Boss told him to get the computer and desk out of there as well !
LoL

I had this one before I switched to LCDs in 2004. Pretty good CRT all around, but you need a lot of space on your desk ;) EBay prices aren't this high anymore though. This one can easily be found for around 100-150 EUR over here (Germany).

There is one on uk ebay for
£450.

If it were 4:3 I'd be interested.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

its pretty damn hard to find 4:3 monitors above 21 inches.

no, a tate game fills up the same area as windows in your screenshot on top.

active play area remains at 4:3 with the black borders on the left and right getting bigger.

Of course you always stretch the game to fill out the whole screen, but that usually defeats play mechanics, as the ship speed increases on the one axis while it stays the same on the other (and it looks ugly of course).

I bought one of those on eBay about 2 years ago for 50 Euro. The guy even delivered it to my doormat for an extra 10.

Best VGA monitor ever. I'm using it for my XBox 360, PS3, Dreamcast and Mac.

There was one consumer monitor (Mitsubishi Diamondtron Flat 22") which was equally good and was 4:3. Can also be found quite cheap nowadays.

Not without an upscaler/linedoubler between the Supergun and the monitor.

Those things that have approximately fifty topics on the first page of the Hardware subforum, where you are now, like the XRGB-3 and the HD Box Pro. Upscaler = converts "240 progressive" arcade RGB outputs to something another display can show, like a 480i classic television or a VGA computer monitor. Linedoubler = converts 240 lines to 480 via a very simple form of scaling (one line becomes two).

Fudoh's homepage, in his signature, has lots of information on the various devices. Go have a look, you might be surprised and get through it all, there's some easy to understand primers there. Edit: A bit slow heh

There are plenty of late CRTs, 20 to 22" which were very high end at the time and made for professional use. The pricetag showed it, Viewsonic P225f for instance. (Supports sync-on-green!) I got one of the very last units made circa 2005 so obviously I keep it around, yes it is "only" 4.3 but I guess what I am saying is that this screen--cool as it is--is really mostly useful if you need your screen for 16.9 as well, something that I think most folks don't necessarily need. Considering how quickly CRT was dropped by most people you can get an excellent screen with unbeatable colour quality for next to nothing, if your only inconvenience considered is to live with the fact it is 4.3. Most CRTs my friends have are in attics or other spaces of unuse right now, just ask around!

Jump on one of these if you can, sure, but don't deprive yourself if you can help it. :D

What is so great about synch on green? My SYNCMASTER 959NF supports it also.

Nothing's great about it, but most screens made just don't support it. The Playstations output SOG by default for RGB so it's nice to have it supported, avoid building another circuit for sync.

SWEET!!! Take good care of it!

I've used these before, but never had a chance to really monkey around with them! With a new video card (doesn't have to be expensive) you should be able to refresh the display up to 160Hz! (Send and actually display 160 fps).

In some ways these types of monitors have extremely limited uses nowadays.... the VGA 31khz input is the biggest killer imo.

At high res a LCD will provide a far superior picture imo, especially for anything text based.

Retro stuff would be the real reason, but since it is PC VGA input and as Fudoh says, you will need a scaler which to some extent negates most of the benefits.

The only benefit in my eyes would be a retro gaming device like a Dreamcast, that outputs VGA @ 640x480 31khz (or xbox 360 for cave shmups etc).
