Gradius Neo

Post by DJ Incompetent »

This...this finally came out...!
(on Sprint [America] anyway.)

yeah I dunno why I didn't try to steal it either... sigh

Bought it on impulse.

by-golly, they really did try when they made this.

+They eliminate the Gradius problem outright with instant respawn and granting you two options right from the start.
+You have two power bars you manage together. The standard one and a green one that only moves forward with green powerups.
+This second power bar is dedicated to six option formations, three which haven't been used before.
+The right and left soft keys are used to select your power from the standard and option (green) powerbars.
+The center button lets you cycle through all your aquired option formations (7 total). You don't lose them when you die either.
+When you use laser, the type of laser you shoot will change depending on what option formation you're using. 4 of the types of laser are new.
+I've had no real issues with collision detection. Hitbox is adequate. The game feels balanced and 1CC actually seems attainable.
+A few neat stage sights like the warping highway and a Zelda 1-ish dungeon stage.
+A lot better than the Gradius 1 mobile port

-Double is standard and unchanged..for better or worse.
-Ghetto Gradius 2/3 Arc Forcefield :P
-Stages don't entirly follow the standard introspace-then-stage format
-Not a ton of different enemies.
-No BGM & SFX option used together, can only pick one of the other (for better or worse).
-BGM still loops poorly like Gradius 1 mobile.
-5 Stages. No Bacterion final. But final boss attacks :):):)
-It's a cell phone game

I would say it is worth 4 out of the $5 paid.

Cell games are not a total trainwreck. Shocking!

I guess it autofires as no cellphones in the west allow for multiuple button presses..

and it probably doesnt have a yoko mode, or does it?

you'll usually find that games for the LG7000 / VX8600 perform the best, as its BREW, and has the best clock rate for 2D.

By default it autofires, yes. The instructions mention an auto-fire setting, but it doesn't show up in the options menu for me. Which is just as well, since manually firing would really suck.

thought as much - bet it doesn't have diagonals either..

celphone games have a long way to go control wise, which is a shame.. the 2 LG phones I mentioned are almost GBA quality in speed.

I just finished a port/reskin collection of a well known retro shooter for a big company, we had to autofire on that too...

The diagonals are there and work fine. The old Gradius port had this working too. The only downside is I had to watch myself when moving down&right because I would hit End on accident, but this just paused the game.

You are correct on the autofire though. You can turn it off, but 0 is to shoot and using that won't let you move and hold 0 at the same time.

I use Samsung SPH-A920

With autofire on, the game basics are there and they work fine. At least in this title.

You must have shrunken superfingers. I can't play Gradius with Mini Chiclets. With my DS Lite I can manage.

Not true anymore, capturing multiple button presses was a requirement of MIDP2.0 and those phones have been out for at least 2 years. My present phone supports mulitple keys pressed at the same time, and it's 1.5 years old.

I've been playing this on my mobile for awhile, and enjoying it quite a bit. There's also R-Type Mobile which is a great port of the classic. Here's a YouTube of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWVUrKldN1k

Symbian phones allow for multiple keypresses on demand.

6 years later...

I would like to play this again, but I have no way to do so because the phone's DRM I have this on requires internet connection.

youtube vids suggest this is emulated, but does anybody know what the game format for these types of old cellphone games are called and what is the name of the emulator that runs them? The Gradius 1 port for this also added a bunch of new levels. I would like to go back and see what those were like.

PhoneME should run since it's a Java game (not sure, haven't tried it)

It's been a while since I did any JME emulation, but MicroEmulator seems to work pretty well. Download and extract it, run microemulator.jar, go to File --> Open MIDlet File and load the jar file of the game you want, then select it on the menu. I'll PM you a link.

That works, but there's no sound. Are there any emulators that support sound? Also, it seems quite slow. Was the game like that?

*edit* a quick inspection of the jar file and all the music and sfx are MIDI so it shouldn't be too tall an order to get that supported.
