T2 The arcade game

Post by humbug »

Hi

I was just wondering if this arcade game has ever been made into a home system or ported to PC?

I know there is the Megadrive version which is limited by the genesis's hardware and there is an MS-DOS version too, but I have always wanted to play the actual arcade version of it...

Also, I was wondering what is the best way to display the games requiring the light gun? Am I restricted to the use of CRT TVs only? I have an XRGB-3 at my disposal... is that of any advantage?

Cheers in advance :D

Epic.

Seriously though, welcome to the forum, you've just confused shoot-em-up's with lightgun shooters which is quite a common error as the term 'shoot-em-up' is used loosely for lots of different genres where shooting stuff is the focus.

Shmups are normally considered to be of the 2D variety, not like Contra but more like Gradius. Even Sin and Punishment 2 is relegated to Off Topic here.

Afaik the T2 arcade Megadrive port is the only one.

There was a SNES, and a GB port. Wikipedia also claims DOS and Amiga versions.

Your best bet is to emulate it. That's as close to the arcade as you'll be able to get without buying a cab.

Yeah, might be a bit of a long haul getting a lightgun setup but I'd go for this too.

Isn't it a bit rubbish though? I always thought the arcade one was a money sucking suck fest.

A god at that game could probably make it to level 2 without seeing the continue screen.

Aren't all Midway-developed arcade games just blatantly unfair quarter munchers?

The real arcade cabinet didn't actually use a lightgun per se. It's more of an oddly shaped analog joystick, the stalk the gun is mounted to is what controls the aiming cursor.

I would have to agree. There were always better light gun games to choose from.

Not back when it was released, really, though. Keep in mind when this game came out, and then understand that the *original* Lethal Enforcers came out about a year later.

Have you played Lethal Enforcers lately? To say that it's "painfully dated" is to be unbelievably kind to it. While T2 was, unabashedly, a quarter-sucker at heart (that was its sole purpose in life, folks...sorry!), T2 still looks and plays relatively decently. It also had a lot more "pop" to it with the digitized movie clips, digitized motion-captured onscreen enemies, and sound quality. As well, it actually played interestingly, and had lots of candy to keep reeling you back in to continue.

I would have to disagree with there "always" being better light gun games to choose from back then. Perhaps today, and perhaps even a couple of years past T2's release, the answer would be yes, but light gun games really didn't start coming into their own until the days of Area 51, Maximum Force, Time Crisis, Virtua Cop, and others. It's a bit harsh to keep judging T2 by these standards.

I agree, light gun games didn't really become decent again until they got away from being machine-gun games. You should compare T2 to games like Mechanized Attack instead of Virtua Cop. Not that it excuses T2, but it puts it into perspective. IIRC the GG version was very playable.

Hmm I played Lethal Enforcers again lately and still liked it =)

I played it last week, and I beat the living @#$% out of that game. It was just *painfully* easy, and it shows its age far, far more than T2 ever will.

LE was nothing to sneeze at in its day, since it really brought us into the "shoot offscreen to reload" era, but that was about it. There's a reason the sequel tanked, and tanked badly. Still, it's about as basic a light gun game as can be had, and while it might be good for a trip down memory lane, T2 would get my quarter first, I would think.

I should also add, in terms of full disclosure, that I was a fan of Revolution X (the arcade game only, though), as well. At least with that game, if you were semi-intelligent about how you played it, and if you knew where certain hidden objects were hidden, you could actually play that game for a good, long time on one credit, and you could do so in continuing, too. Yes, it could still suck quarters, but it felt more fair than T2 did, at least to a degree.

And yes: I realize that most folks *hate* Revolution X, and that it's kind of a gigglesome afterthought of video games past. I don't care...I still thought it was fun. Silly as all-get-out, but still fun.

I was looking very briefly into MAME. Sort of thing what I am looking for...

But would anyone know where I could just get the arcade circuit board and maybe a light gun?

I disagree, Operation Wolf, Thunderbolt and Beast Busters very much put things in perspective for me at the time and ever since - T2 The Arcade Game was pretty shit by comparison. Even Alien 3: The Gun was way better.

(And wtf does everybody like Area 51 for, that was a stinker iirc too. :| )

I'm with you, T2 Arcade is a game I always go back to. Not for score, but just that its so enjoyable, and I remember when it was the highlight of local arcades at the time. Also, some great memories of playing it with my dad.

And yeah, could never get past the fight with the ship >_<

yeah that level is almost impossible on the genesis, single player with a bloody D-pad.

I'm really looking forward to playing the MAME version with the mouse! OH YEAH!

At least get a lightgun to make things fair (i.e. the Menacer packed in with many copies of T2).

Light Gun is not trivial. Search for posts by me at Arcade Otaku. Some good insight there. I never got around to fuckign w/ it though.

You're telling me that Operation Thunderbolt is/was better than T2? Not in this universe, nor any parallel to this one. Absolute crazy talk. OT was a travesty, stem to stern.

That's what I'm telling you.

Everyone likes to go back to games they used to play as a kid, but the above pretty much invalidates your T2 > OT argument. Basically you were just putting money into the wrong shit and nostalgia is doing you an injustice.

In the meantime, anyone remember Sega's In the Line of Fire? That was a goodie!
