Shaq Fu (Genesis/SNES)
Big Rigs (PC)
Illbleed (Dreamcast)
Bad Dudes (NES)
The Freespace War Series (PC)
Ikuraga (GC/DC)
Zombie Ate My Neighbors (Gens/SNES)
Einhander (PS1)
Gunstar Heroes (GENS)
Streets Of Rage (GENS)
Aliens Vs Predator 1/2 (PC)
So what else I'm missing?

People like Big Rigs?

Oh yeah, you're forgetting Umihara Kawase.
The radio said, "No, John. You are the demons."
And then, John was a zombie.

I was actually going to start a thread on the subject of games with a cult following. No, really.

I think for the most part, videogames with a cult following would be ones that have a strong loyal audience and/or a moderate level of popularity, but not a large one. I also think that games that are an unpopular or obscure tend to be "cultish" in nature as well.

Shmups are cult gaming personified. For the most part, they are games with a moderate level of popularity with a small but fiercely loyal fanbase.

In my opinion, the Castlevania series has a strong cult following. Final Fantasy seems to be in the vein of "cult" level games, but I consider Final Fantasy too popular to be "cultish". I would argue that a lot of RPGs tend to have some cult level to them as most mainstream gamers ignore them. I think RPG series like Ys and Shin Megami Tensei tend to have cult-like followings.

With all that said, here are some more games off the top of my head that I consider to have a cult following:
ALL Treasure games
Rez
Ico
Kouldelka series (Kouldelka, Shadow Hearts, Shadow Hearts: Covenant)
Katamari Damashii
Princess Crown
Snatcher
Soulblader series (Soulblader/Soulblazer, Terranigma, Illusion of Gaia)
Strider
Valis series

Earthbound (SNES)

Maybe it's a bit more popular now, but sales in America were poor back when the game was released in 1995.

It's cult enough to make people wonder where the heck Ness is from when they play Super Smash Bros.

There's rumor of a Mother 3 game coming out for GBA, but weither or not it'll make the swim to the states is still a huge mystery.

Harvest fucking Moon (any system)
anything published by Nippon Ichi
anything published by Atlus
Panzer Dragoon Series (SAT, Xbox)
anything developed by Tri Ace (SFC, PS1, PS2)
anything developed by Sucker Punch (N64, PS2)
anything by Looking Glass (Terra fucking Nova)
Tribes Vengence (PC)
Clive Barker's Undying (PC)
Oddworld Stranger's Wrath (Xbox)

Surprise choice...

Chaser (PC). The game got panned by critics when it came out, sold like shit, and is now available for $4 new from ebGames. Word on the street is that it has a jaw dropping, balls to the wall, amazing fucking storyline in it. Seeing as I just picked it up for $4 new from EBGames not too long ago, it's in my queue of stuff to play through :)

I wasn't aware this game had any following whatsoever, cult or otherwise. Nice that you should mention it though. It's a very cool game with a fun weapon's system and great spooky atmosphere and graphics (the rain effect in particular).

Bubble bobble has to be up there.

Street fighter

Resident evil

Final Fantasy

Secret of Mana

Chrono Trigger

Cult is too widespread a word.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Something that's really hip with a select group of people.
"Rocky Horror Picture Show" is a cult classic.
Shaq fu does have a small following.
But it's not really what you'd expect.

Final Fantasy is so damn popular that some people think it the Be-all-end-all RPG franchise/standard. . .which is a bloated lie :P

The Turrican series has its own healthy fan-scene.

Also - the Star Control series.

There was a big feature in Edge a month ago on the developers of maniac mansion, worth finding if you're into those games.

You know, any big franchise can have a cult following. But it's got to be small to be considered a cult classic.

I definitely nominate the Gungrave series, in 5 years it'll be even more revered as people start to re-discover it.

Oh man, here's one...

Operation Flashpoint

its community is small but extremely devoted in ways that makes Tribes fans look like pussies, it has awesome gameplay that stands up well to this day and is unmatched by any other realistic squad based first person shooter.

You can still go online and hook up with people for some extremely fun Co Op gameplay (nothing like playing through custom campaigns co op in this game... some people that have only seen screenshots label it as a BF1942 wanna be, but it's the game that Battlefield wants to be but never will be :) )

Do Re Mi Fantasy is highly underrated. It's like the only reason to own an SNES and nobody ever mentions it.
