Starcraft issues...

Not with the second one, but the first, which a friend gave me today-I put it in our CD-ROM drive, and the logo (under My Computer) of the game is coming up, but it's not even asking me if I want to install it?? What's up with that?? When I run the cursor over the drive logo, it's saying that I don't have enough space, but I tried it with a 4gig memory stick, and it's still telling me that.

No error messages or anything-just the logo in My Computer.

It would be best not to install the game to a removable drive, and definitely not to a CD-ROM drive...

If the disc isn't autorunning, can't you click into the CD-ROM directory and run the installer manually? I keep a XP partition around just to run Starcraft and some other old games. I disable autorun as the first thing after each time I install Windows, but I've never had a problem with installing things manually.

If you do manage to install it, don't forget to grab all the patches so you can run the game without the CD, and watch the tournament replays.

I'll try that, but like I said, it's not even asking me if I want to install the game, in spite of the fact that the Starcraft logo is appering over the CD-ROM, under My Computer. What's an XP partition?

Memory might be the issue; our storage is pathetic, since we've never upgraded our PC's memory from what it was when we got it 6 years ago. We have Comcast digital high speed internet, but I didn't even have the space on our PC to store the files to run Dunegons and Dragons online!

Are you sure you tried to install it manually? There are various files on the install CD. One of them should be named "Setup" or something along those lines. Double click said file and the installation process should begin. Sometimes, when you can't install a game from a CD, you can copy all the files from CD onto a hard drive and install it from HD.
StarCraft requires very little memory and computing power. It's a 12 year old PC game. When it came out, Voodoo II video card rendering Quake II in 1600x1200 at 30 fps was all over the computer news.
P.S. Actually I'm not sure if Voodoo II was actually able to do that (it's been a while), but it really was quite a few generations of PC hardware ago.

I'm not sure why autorun isn't working for you, but it's not unusual for the icon for you disc drive to change when StarCraft's inserted. Most PC games do that. Try double-clicking on you drive icon; if autorun starts, great, and if you're brought to the disc's contents instead, double-click on SETUP.EXE and install the game to your hard drive.

If you got Brood War as well, repeat the process with its disc. Then you can start the game and log on to battle.net to have it patched. If you need the CD-key, it should be on the back of StarCraft's jewel case.

Well, I popped the disc in today, and it's telling me that there's no space on the CD-ROM drive (F), but I don't know how that's possible. I opened the files and went to install, and it said the same thing-not responding. According to the CD-ROM properties, it's working perfectly. So at this point, I have no idea what's going on.

Nope, this is an original copy of Starcraft (version 1.0) for Windows '95 or NT. Our PC didn't find anything wrong with the age of the game.

I just got of the phone with an old friend who does computer programming-he said storage isn't the issue, he said that it's either a problem with the CD-ROM drive or scratches on the disc. There are some scratches on the disc, so I'll get some of that stuff they sell at GameStop, polish the disc up, and then see what happens.

Uh, that doesn't sound like the same thing. I don't know, maybe you could post some screenshots of what exactly you're doing.

Ok, update: this same friend gave me Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries 3D Enhanced Edition, and our PC is giving me a box that says: Fatal Error: This product no longer supports Windows NT.
