Re: Cave says iPhone and downloads could be future of the genre
I get the point that most of us prefer our shooters on a cabinet or home system where we can use proper controls. I'm one of those people too. But I just don't get the connection between releasing ports of arcade oriented games, which is what Cave solely creates, on portable devices, and them moving solely to said platform. It just doesn't make sense.Aru-san wrote:Some people, like gs68, are all right with Cave games coming to iPhone. Likewise, there are traditionalist shmuppers that prefer Cave to release to console and play with their arcade sticks.
Hopefully, the "downloads" part of this whole headline will imply that at least XBLA is a viable option, but it's too early for me, or anyone else for that matter, to judge whether or not Cave is going to go all iPhone from here on out unless they officially announce it.
Let just say, hypothetically, that Cave were to go iPhone exclusive. If that were to ever happen, then obviously it was no longer viable for them to make their games on arcade hardware and/or port those games to home systems. In which case, they just wouldn't exist period. No more games from Cave, ever.
I think everyone is just over reacting to this. It's a good thing that they can release these games to a new platform and make money off of them while possibly exposing the genre to a wider audience. It's win win for everyone involved.

Thanks for the link, Kron.
I got a huge smile on my face when they unveiled the new WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION and stuff. That was awesome.
Seriously though, CAVE is going to be making bucketloads of fucking money on the iDevices. This shit is top-quality.
People will eat this shit up. Hopefully this and Akai Katana make enough cash that they can make a good game once in a while.

Considering how expensive even the Core 2 Duo Apples are, let alone thinking about a whiff of something i7 or AMD, how this is supposed to make me feel better?ChurchOfSolipsism wrote:in terms of technical specifications, it's a small Apple computer
In all seriousness, I'm surprised it's taken this long for anybody "serious" to start thinking about the platform. There have been serious applications for the new iPhone-era phones (Droid etc. also) that it's puzzling that it's taken so long for the genre giants (if they still qualify as giants) to start milking the cow along with the traditional gaming giants - Konami, Namco, Capcom, etc. - and the "casual games" industry. It definitely has a lot of promise and in terms of pricing, form factor, and play session time, it seems as good a fit as many other formats (though I generally would still prefer the controls of consoles, though the latest generation seems to require an expensive arcade joystick to do anything competently, plus you can't take your console on the Metro or Underground).
Really, there ought to be somebody else out there kicking their asses already - I think if they put out quality games that there will always be a market available for them however. Plus it will be refreshing to see the "how much time until X is emulated" posts when said games are in something even worse DRM'd than BREW
