Let's Japan shopping! What should I get/where/how much?

Post by wampa1 »

I'm going to Japan in mid-October for 3 weeks!! :D :D
I've been there before, so I know about Akihabara and all its gaming stuff (and I'll visit HEY for sure) also been to Nakano for toys/figures, but this time it'll be a Tokyo/Osaka/Fukuoka trip and am not too knowledgeable on other cool gaming places or specific stores to visit.

Looking for advice on either getting a Saturn or PCE Duo, also any other recommendations/comments. I know there's a lot of questions below, so please throw in any tidbit of info that you have! I will not be getting ALL the items listed, just can probably spend $300ish total.

Hardware I own: 360 w/ TE stick, PS3 w/ USB saturn pad, PS2 (w/freemcboot), JP Dreamcast, Wii (homebrewed), NDS, PSP. Imported games: (360) futari, galuda II, (PS2) mushi, (DC) most of the JP shmups, (PSP) Star Soldier, Salamander Portable. (Wii) Illvelo, Milestone Collection

Saturn (either this or a PCE duo, getting both will be too expensive)
- Used system ** (which particular model is best to get for durability?)
- essential accessories?? (advice)
- Radiant Silvergun (expensive but might be cheaper in Japan than ebay/trading, where to buy?)
- Battle Garegga, Batsugun (where to buy? whats a good price in yen for these?)

PC Engine/Duo
- Used Duo system (expensive? what are my options?)
- essential accessories?? (advice)
- Whatever shmups I can find (Nexzr, Lords of Thunder, others?)
- Other PCE games (had a TG16 so I'd like a retro fix with cool english-friendly PCE games - advice?)

PS3
- 3000yen PSN card for JP PSN shmups (I think its enough - is there an updated list of JP PSN shmups?)

Wii
- Radirgy Noa (any good? will get if recommended - haven't played the first one)

PSP
- Darius Burst (recommended?)

PS2
- PS2 saturn controller (I know, my odds of finding this at a reasonable price are slim to none..where'd be a place to find this?)
- alternatives to saturn controller? I only have a DS2 :(

Anything else I should consider? Also stores to go to in Tokyo, Osaka?

Saturn (either this or a PCE duo, getting both will be too expensive)
- Used system ** (which particular model is best to get for durability?)
Possible to get unboxed working bog standard saturn for low cost, but budget for 2980 worst case. Retro Store in Aki used to have boxed machines for around that price. $35
- essential accessories?? (advice)
if you have a TV that can take RGB, then the RGB cable, but not easy to find. Failing that an Svideo cable at least is an upgrade.
- Radiant Silvergun (expensive but might be cheaper in Japan than ebay/trading, where to buy?)
Nakano Broadway, Galaxy - have had a couple of damaged copies as low as 7000 yen recently. If you want a AAA grade copy then you can wave goodbye to a good $150 or so of your budget right here.
- Battle Garegga, Batsugun (where to buy? whats a good price in yen for these?)
Again, Galaxy - damaged (and i'm sure you'll struggle to see where it is) and obi-less copies around 3500 yen. Expect to pay at least 6000 yen for Garegga and 4800 for Batsugun AT LEAST elsewhere. Other places to try in Aki - Mandarake (mother company of Galaxy) , Traders, etc.
PC Engine/Duo
- Used Duo system (expensive? what are my options?)
$130+ depends on the model. I highly recommend saving up and getting one of the upgraded Duo models on ebay with the improved cd drive and the RGB mod.
- Whatever shmups I can find (Nexzr, Lords of Thunder, others?)
lot of reasonably priced shmups in the 1000 - 2800 yen range. Should be able to get Gates/Lords for that amount. Rtype complete/Side arms/Goffer usually quite cheap but possibly redundant.
- Other PCE games (had a TG16 so I'd like a retro fix with cool english-friendly PCE games - advice?)
too many to mention ! will think later. Very Cheap goodies (may not be to everyones taste) : Gomola Speed, Zipang.
PS3
- 3000yen PSN card for JP PSN shmups (I think its enough - is there an updated list of JP PSN shmups?)
will get you 5 games. Should keep you going.
Wii
- Radirgy Noa (any good? will get if recommended - haven't played the first one)
not my cup of tea, find a Book Off, 1980 yen used.
PSP
- Darius Burst (recommended?)
again, wasn't that impressed by it - 2980-3980 at the moment. it's about 3480 in Sofmap right now.
PS2
- PS2 saturn controller (I know, my odds of finding this at a reasonable price are slim to none..where'd be a place to find this?)
- alternatives to saturn controller? I only have a DS2
can't say i've seen one. Only other alternatives i can think of is one of the hori wireless which i used a lot and enjoyed but probably not necessary and a bit expensive.

If you have an X360 machine capable of playing Japanese games, you might want to hunt down Ketsui. Not only is it great, but it's hit 2980 yen NEW in a lot of places. Really shouldn't be missed at full price, but at that price it is essential.
Anything else I should consider? Also stores to go to in Tokyo, Osaka?
can only say for Tokyo - not all of these are the greatest in terms of price - if you have time do a good loop around all the stores and keep track of price. If you find something you DESPERATELY want though that you think is rare, then sometimes it's good to jump on it. I've missed a few items i wanted because i went to check it wasn't in somewhere else for cheaper only to come back and find it gone.

As a rule of thumb - Den Den Town in Osaka has cheaper prices than Akihabara. Quite a bit lower in fact. It's been a few years since i've been there so that may have changed so perhaps someone else can advise on that.

- Nakano Broadway - Galaxy - lots of retro games, some great prices if you aren't looking for AAA quality packaging. Some extremely rare items.
- Akihabara - Mandarake - retro centric, some good prices and a good selection of shmups. Some bargains to be had on the retro front.
- Akihabara - Traders - on the main street, their new building - again good selection of new and retro games with some good / bad prices. A good place to check first for second hand hardware like your saturn.
- Akihabara - Super Friends - some good awful prices in this place, yet in amongst all that there's always some cheap stuff to be picked out. Mainly Snes/NES/PCE but definitely worth a look. Not the sort of place to shop in first.
- Akihabara - Retro game - again, some crazy prices, but a decent selection, they have a bargain rail on the second floor with some great finds for 50-100 yen. Worth checking.
- Aki/Osaka - Super Potato - a lot of price variance here! Some of the games prices are way way WAY out of hand, that said their bargain section is usually stocked with some genuine well priced goods. Hardware selection is good - theres a Famicom Titler in the Aki branch right now too - and they have a stack of unboxed hardware so you maybe able to find a good , cheap Saturn there.
- All over japan - Book Off - really good bargain hunting to be had in these stores. They are dotted all around Japan and are always worth checking. You really never know what you will find and a lot of the time the prices are way below Akihabara. Could also be a good place to find a cheap saturn - the sister store Hard Off is more hardware centric and also worth a punt.
- Akihabara - in general - hit the back streets behind the Club Sega on the main street. Half of the fun is dashing in the (now sadly less and less in numbers) smaller stores and seeing what you can find.

Super Aki tip - like ramen? Go to the large Yodobashi camera store's food floor and find a place called Komen. They have a ramen called "Kogashi tantanmen" and it's absolutely amazing, adding dried garlic flakes makes it absolutely pant shaking!. :)

If you want a Japanese Saturn, I have one that I kind of want to get rid of. Was planning on just selling it in the future but if you want it I can hold it until you get here.

Kamata has some good game stores but it's not the most tourist-friendly area. There are some awesome retro shops out in the more rural areas like Chiba, but probably not worth the effort to go there. For some reason I've found that the best deals are outside of the Tokyo area, there's an amazing store in Kanazawa that has most of their games 3/500yen, stocked up on a ton of PC-Engine titles there.

One of the Akihabara Softmaps has pretty reasonably priced games, it's focused on retro games and you might be able to pick up a PC-Engine for around 10000yen, just make sure you know how to read for damages and defects (they'll be listed on the box, this is true of any store you go to).

I've always thought that Nakano's prices on retro games were really expensive compared to other stores, although I do like buying some of their old gaming magazines.

In Denden, you can find retro games pretty cheap at one of the Softmaps there. They had a clearance for PC-Engine games for like 100yen each, other systems too.

Famicom house is pretty cool, there's a few in Tokyo and one in Fukuoka.

Gangster Fukuoka has some retro games, it's near Sasabaru station.

Battle Garegga for 6000 yen??? Where? Because when I have been there in late april and early may I have only seen it once and for 8500 yen complete. I saw it one day, and then never saw it again nowhere in Akiba and Nakano.
May be it has go down in price in these few months, but 2000 yen seems a lot to me.

it was actually some time ago (a few months back maybe) - Traders new store had it for 6000-something. I don't remember the exact price but i remember thinking "ooh, 6000 odd yen for Garegga... that's pretty good". But note this wasn't a AAA condition couple of copies. They both had something "wrong" with them. If you want a full complete perfect copy you are going to pay a hell of a premium.

will do a scan again next time i'm in Akihabara. A lot of prices -are- on the way down recently, so maybe even more chance of snagging a cheaper copy.

I found a Battle Garegga with spine card for 2900 at a Geo Amusement. While I like Mandarake and Sofmap and other dedicated game seller chains, it pays to shop around the ones that don't specialize in games (like Geo or Book Off).

Oh yea, if you go to Nakano Broadway, make sure to check out the ice cream store in the basement. You can get an epic 7-flavor stacked cone!

Sometimes you can get lucky looking for rare games at common stores like Bookoff, although I think most people have enough sense not to sell them there. One of my friends wanted to sell his copy of Rakugaki Showtime (some rare PS1 Treasure game) and they would only give me like a few hundred yen, I think he eventually just went online with it. I suppose that sometimes the seller doesn't know any better, no harm in looking around if you're near one.

I know that you can find some games at cheap prices in book off stores and similars, but in my last trip I found some rarities but none of the where cheap. Dodonpachi for PSX was around 5000yen, and so on.
I guess that I had bad luck that is all.
Also one of the worst to find at decent prices was Ibara. The lowest price I saw it, it was 10000 yen, without the extra booklet.
Looks like Japan is odder than I thought.

Wow thanks a lot WinterMute and Originalz!!

Some quality responses compared to the first reply... yahoo auctions? I'm not living there dude.

That's a lot of info, a couple of things:

I don't have a JP 360, so I'd consider buying a cheap Arcade unit and get Ketsui, although with the region-free 360 Cave games and localized Deathsmiles, the incentive to get one isn't as high as it once was. Ketsui's that cheap eh? I guess it got a big print run? I just don't wanna lug a big & heavy 360 around... maybe I'll buy one near the end of my trip or else ship it ;)

I was hoping Radiant Silvergun would be around 12,000 yen range, which I remember it being about 5 years ago in Tokyo. Battle Garegga for 6,000 sounds amazing. Thanks for the tip on Nakano's Galaxy, I'll definitely hit that place! I'm not going to head into 'inaka' areas too much, except for maybe in Fukuoka, but I'll try to find some GEOs and Book-offs to see if I can find some gems :)

I concur Garegga is down a bit.

I've seen copies change hands for 50-60$ recently (mint but w/o spine).

RS is down a bit when it actually sells. Not sure what the shops ask for it though.

I remember when i went a few years ago, the used game stores had baskets full of old, used consoles, for really cheap. I got a working Mega CD2 probably cost about 2000 yen or something.

also, i got some games from the baskets on the market stalls, i found stuff like Thunderforce 5 Special Ed. for Saturn (New and sealed) for about 2900 yen, just jumbled amongst a load of other games. This was selling for more like £70 over here at the time.

Only problem is carrying all the stuff back with you in the hand luggage, as electronics cant go in the hold

Enjoy your visit.

Hmm - went to Akihabara for a brief lunchtime wander.

Only saw one copy of Battle Garrega - behind the glass in Traders. 7250 yen.

I didn't do many places as i was looking for something in particular for myself, maybe back there tonight so will check then.

Is 7250 for Garegga a decent price at least? Hopefully it's at least common enough so when I get to Japan, it won't be hard to find and I can compare prices. Also, how much in yen for RS, Batsugun? And, dare I ask, Hyper Duel? (and how rare is it to see in stores?)

Another item I'm looking for is a Dreamcast ASCII FT pad… I tried looking for one when I was last in Japan, but never had luck finding one. Do you know any shops that carry them?

From yesterdays quick trip :

Garrega - 7250 yen seems a good price for something unavailable elsewhere (again, didn't go everywhere and didn't go Nakano)
Batsugun - cheapest was 4400 yen, and prices usually stuck around that except
RS - ranges from 14000 yen all the way up to 28000 yen in some pleaces.

Hyper dual - wasn't looking for it, but i'm pretty sure you are looking at 7800 minimum.
Blast Wind - just in case, around 9800 at best (again, Nakano's rough price)

ASCII FT's - i couldn't say, will have a look next time i'm out and about.

Will likely be in Nakano in the next week or so , so will let you know the prices there.

was in Nakano today - 9800 yen for Hyper.

But yeah, no Garrega - seems to have vanished off the face of Tokyo for the time being.

Garegga was a miss for me in May. As I have said I had only seen it once and no more.
But I got luck because I was able to purchase Blast Wind in mint condition for 6800 yen.

I've found that stepping into used CD and comic stores in random locations has given me good luck.

I walked into one such small place when I was there a couple years ago, and picked up Mushihime for 2000yen. Couldn't believe it. I think the only one I saw other than that was closer to 8000 in Akiba, although I think it was a LE with figure.

Also walked into a place between Ueno and Akiba, and saw one of those Wii SFC classic controllers for 1500 or 2000yen and snatched that up as well. The others I saw later that week back in Akiba were like 4000 or 5000.

What is Ibara PS2 going for in Tokyo these days? I saw on ebay people were asking a lot more than Espgaluda or DDP.

Traders is giving 3000 for the latter, and 7000 for Ibara... can't remember what I paid but it couldn't have been much more than that.

Stupid-Yen. 19800 yen in Traders. Seen it for (not much) less, seen it for (a lot) more.

I saw it at Nakano in May ranging between 12500 and 18900, being the lowest used without the extra booklet and the expensiest new with extra booklet.
