Java doesn't have pointers? That seems... not right. Maybe I read that wrong.

I have a friend here that's actually getting a CS degree from Purdue. He says they start w/ Java, and the 3rd year they go to C. I never studied computers in college so I can't say. I learned all my shit on the job, and came from a scripting background. So, to say I have knowledge gaps is an understatement. My head gets spun around when I have to do shit like bitwise operations that today, are rarely used compared to the olden days.

Sort of. Java has references, which are basically safer (but more limited) pointers. Of course, C++ also has references, but Java references are more like C++ pointers than C++ references.

It seems weird that people use Java as a teaching language.. I remember it being harder to get a grip on than C++. It was what I tried to learn after Pascal and BASIC, and I just remember being assaulted with unexplained keywords :)

Poor Pascal.. that was a good one. Powerful, easy to learn, simple.

Something I've been playing around with is KXStudio and am very happy with it.

This is the first distro where EVERYTHING is routed through JACK which is kind of a big deal for me. Of course I wish that everything used jack natively but having ALSA and PULSEAUDIO routed through jack works very well. Working just fine with my M-Audio Delta 44, which doesn't always play nice with new distros.

Any musicians out there should give it a shot for fun.
