3DS for shmups?
3DS for shmups?
The latest generation of handhelds have been a disappointment for shmups. Outside the emu scene, the PSP and DS has only really had retro collections like Gradius Portable, Space Invaders, etc. Only Nanostray 2 and Bangai-o Spirits appears to have been an original shmup hand tailored for its system, with much care and attention paid to it.
But am I the only one who thinks the 3DS could be the console for the genre?
1.) Finally, a Nintendo handheld with a built in analog stick.
2.) 3D technology could mean bullets are easier to differentiate from the background.
What do you guys think?

Re: 3DS for shmups?
Semi on-topic: I so want Space Harrier, After Burner and Galaxy Force for the 3DS
That aside, no, I neither want to play classic shmpus with an analogue controller, nor do I want bullets that are displayed above or below my ship with some kind of 3D effect just to make the game "3D"...

I'm not sure how that's good for playing shmups.Terramax wrote:1.) Finally, a Nintendo handheld with a built in analog stick.

I can't wait for a handheld Star Fox 64.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Well, isn't it better than a D-pad?the2bears wrote:I'm not sure how that's good for playing shmups.Terramax wrote:1.) Finally, a Nintendo handheld with a built in analog stick.

I guess I didn't think pretty much everyone here is a hardcore arcade stick fan, but if a 3DS game is hand tailored for analog then surely it could play very well?

Pulfrich glasses already do this.

I'd buy a Saturn pad with a screen.

Re: 3DS for shmups?
The 3DS means we can finally see a sequel to Vertical Force, the best shmup on the Virtual Boy!

Re: 3DS for shmups?
I'll only get it if they keep the red bullets on red backgrounds.MrPopo wrote:The 3DS means we can finally see a sequel to Vertical Force, the best shmup on the Virtual Boy!

Re: 3DS for shmups?
I think it will be quite good for 3D shmups (obviously a term that many people dislike), such as Starfox and the new Kid Icarus. I hope a Sin and Punishment game comes out for the 3DS. Is a new Panzer Dragoon hoping for too much? Unfortunately, I don't see 2D shmups working too well. The D-pad is awkwardly placed and probably won't be too great to begin with. Of course, the 3D effect can look great for 2D games as well (forground, midground, background separation), so I'm sure a sprite-based shmup would be a cool experience, but the controls are certainly not optimal.

But you don't have to wear weird glasses with the 3DS.SGGG2 wrote:Pulfrich glasses already do this.Terramax wrote:2.) 3D technology could mean bullets are easier to differentiate from the background.
I'd personally prefer a PD on a big monitor, a system like the wii.linko9 wrote:I think it will be quite good for 3D shmups ...Is a new Panzer Dragoon hoping for too much? Unfortunately, I don't see 2D shmups working too well.

Re: 3DS for shmups?
Analog sticks are great if the game actually can use them. Playing Ikaruga on Gamecube with the analog stick is a nightmare. Digital pads/sticks are much easier to use if the game doesn't support analog.
We better get a few good rail shooters for it. That's what the 3D screams to me.

Re: 3DS for shmups?
On rails and generic shooters should be alright, but the possible eyestrain and the not exactly wide viewing angle would severely hinder gaeplay should CAVE decide to release anything else for the handheld (not likely, with their newfound obsession/moneymaking with the iDevice platform).

Absolutely not. A good d-pad is always going to be better than a good analog stick. With respect, you are insane.Terramax wrote:Well, isn't it better than a D-pad?the2bears wrote:I'm not sure how that's good for playing shmups.Terramax wrote:1.) I have an og PSP and I always use the slider on that for Gradius/Parodius because the d-pad is garbage and doesn't register diagonals, but that's it.

Just pointing out you can play all your shmups in 3D right now.Terramax wrote:But you don't have to wear weird glasses with the 3DS.

I agree with that !Terramax wrote: 3D technology could mean bullets are easier to differentiate from the background.
Unfortunately, the 3DS screen will be in 16/9. and i've a preference for verticals.
It reminds me some DS pics saw on the net wich could rotate screen :

Lovely, but fake.

So maybe we'll only have Death smiles and Akai katana 3D ports on it.
Not so bad, finally.

Re: 3DS for shmups?
Ports would do me just fine. I just want at least one manic shmup for the DS. I know there is one out there, but it's a boss rush and it costs £100+ on ebay ; ;bobusan wrote: So maybe we'll only have Death smiles and Akai katana 3D ports on it.

Re: 3DS for shmups?
Would be technically impossible to do, anyways.bobusan wrote: Lovely, but fake.
Tate in 3D is impossible on the actual 3DS because of the way the 3D works.
Re: 3DS for shmups?
Lenticular screen probably means it will be hard to see exactly where the bullets are. :/

Re: 3DS for shmups?
Only reason I'd buy a 3DS would be for a portable Panzer Dragoon.
Otherwise, 3DS eyestrain + bullet hell/shmuppin' = the HELL no!
besides you can get more fun outta playing TF IV with ye'old 3D glasses on. Ooooooh...trippy.

It really is a good game even if it do not compete with the arcade original, of course..Terramax wrote:Ports would do me just fine. I just want at least one manic shmup for the DS. I know there is one out there, but it's a boss rush and it costs £100+ on ebay ; ;

Yeah, an Homebrew for the Coleco or VCS, would be great !ShmupSamurai wrote:besides you can get more fun outta playing TF IV with ye'old 3D glasses on. Ooooooh...trippy.

Well I just tried Vertical Force on mednafen wearing some red and cyan 3d specsMrPopo wrote:The 3DS means we can finally see a sequel to Vertical Force, the best shmup on the Virtual Boy!

The ability to change the depth of your ship in the game actually works well and I can see this working for 3DS shmups too.Introducing a z-axis has the same kind of 2-level effect as having different weapons for ground enemies and aerial enemies a la Layer Section.
Unlike Layer section however, Vertical Force looks a bit shit

Re: 3DS for shmups?
The PSX game of Einhander looks great in 3D if you use an LCD-based shutter type of 3D glasses. Of course, this particular PSX shmup title is running in 480i @ 60fps...still looks stunning using said 3D glasses.

Re: 3DS for shmups?
I don't really see how could the 3DS improve a shooting game; in some manner it could be worse with all the"3D" effects focusing on superfluous stuff and distracting us from the real thing, although I wouldn't care if they use it in the background effects at all, just imagine the first level of Blazing Star when the airships are launching in the background or the psychedelic backgrounds of Darius.
