I got The Thing on BluRay. I only saw it once, about 15 years ago, so forgot most of it. Great flick. Totally worth owning.

Re: 2010 Movies thread
I saw The Thing for the first time a few years ago. It does one of my favorite things that so few horror films get right anymore: don't show the monster unless you absolutely have to. When it did show up, I remember thinking I'd seen it before in a Resident Evil game. The Morricone score's sparseness really adds atmosphere to the whole thing.
I'm normally the sort of person who sees maybe three films in theaters per year, but this spring I got tired of being consistently fucked over by my psychotic old bosses, so I quit my job and took a part time position shoveling popcorn and selling tickets at the local movie theater (the intent being I can use the time to fill out applications and look for leads on better careers, which has been a total fucking joke DON'T GET A LIBERAL ARTS DEGREE IN COLLEGE, KIDS YOU MIGHT AS WELL DROP OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL AS YOU'LL BE LESS IN DEBT AND JUST AS HIREABLE). Anyways, one of the few perks is free movies when you're not on duty, and the place is a bit more on the independent/foreign/art house side of things, so there's almost always something showing that I'd like to see, plus I feel like I owe it to my job to see a couple of the currently playing ones just to be able to provide more info on the customer service end of things.
"Greenberg" was very good, provided you went into the theater not expecting a typical stupid Ben Stiller comedy. The movie just managed to do sympathetically flawed characters with a realism I haven't seen in... well, I can't quite think of any examples.
The film adaptation of "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" ("Män som hatar kvinnor") is really, really excellent. A bit intense for me in the first hour (I giggled through most of "Ichi the Killer," but then rape isn't quite as funny as over-the-top sadistic torture) but very powerful throughout. Definitely worth seeing.
"Get Him to the Greek" I thought was just going to be another dumb comedy built on cheap laughs from gross-out humor, but it turned out to be pretty entertaining. A lot of the humor comes from taking potshots at aspects of the music industry, and it's probably the best rock-and-roll film I've seen since Almost Famous.
"Harry Brown" was pretty good as well, in a sort of melancholy way. It really hit some smart points that a lesser movie would have just glossed over with more violence and revenge.
Really looking forward to Scott Pilgrim and Tron Legacy. I only hope that Kitano's "Outrage" gets distribution somewhere close to here; it looks like it could be a "Sonatine 2.0." Failing that, I will take another "Getting Any?".
Damn the local brewery makes a good ginger beer.

Re: 2010 Movies thread
Spent the last week getting luls from Avatar reviews. It's hard not to laugh at lines like "selective dirt blindness" or "hero's journey bukkake."
But then I read comments like "I know it's going to be fucking horrible but I'm going to go see it anyway lol" and I want to punch them very hard. Punch them until parts of their face comes off and their skulls fracture and until my hand explodes. Bad movies wouldn't exist if they didn't turn a profit, which this one looks like it very well will through DVD sells.
What kinda douchebag feels compelled to "write" a script for rehashed shit like this. You have an animated storyboard right there. You know you have 90-120 minutes to fill. You splice out the most critical episodes, you stick them in there, and you end up with something that's just mediocre instead of garbage.
But this guy! This guy! Changed everything he could change for the worse just to make it worse. It's like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic by dumping them off into the sea.

Re: 2010 Movies thread
Its a good rehash of the original but not worthy of spending a trip to the cinema. Better to wait till its out on Sky or dvd.moonblood wrote:Anyone seen Predators yet? it's getting decent reviews.. I'm going saturday

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
Re: 2010 Movies thread
first half was really entertaining and fun, but the second half was just horrible. And for a sci fi lover, like myself, the lack of consequences for all the bullshit they pulled in the end really got to me.Strider77 wrote:Did you like it? Re: 2010 Movies thread
Man, want to see Inception, saw Last Airbender instead, despite my reservations.
Keeping my fanboy-ism aside, the movie is at least half an hour too short. They are trying to do 25 or so episodes of material in 90 minutes. Maybe there is a way to do this but the film effectively turns into a montage. I could toss so many other criticisms at this film, but there is a point where a film is so sloppy it just becomes a convoluted mess. Didn't anyone see this coming while they were making the film?
I'm thrilled to see people attempt to make ambitious films with amazing visual feats (how the hell do you show flying air-bisons and suspend disbelief?), but it doesn't excuse poor directing, scripting, editing, etc. I feel like I just watched 3 random episodes of Avatar (actually, that might have been better), but for some reason it is a movie.
I really wish someone else had directed this...but then again, there are only about 4 or 5 living directors right now I'm impressed by (IE I should have seen Inception.)

Re: 2010 Movies thread
I thought hot tub was quite funny, its a comedy not a sci fi. If you want to watch a sci fi there are better movies out there. 4/5 (as a comedy)
Green Zone - Thought it was ok, suprised of its contents considering its a US movie. 3.5/5
Hurt locker - This is more drama.. But then again, thats what Iraq is.. Drama. Similar in vein to the above, except it concentrates more on disarming bombs in the most unlikeliest places. 4/5
The losers - Its the A team all over again. Surpisingly I was hooked up until about an hour in. After that it became a Seagul movie. 3/5.

Re: 2010 Movies thread
Went to see Mr. Nobody with my ex a couple days ago, what an excellent movie that was! If you like Donnie Darko, Butterfly Effect, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, or The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, I'm sure this will be up your alley. Probably the best movie released in the last couple years that I've seen.
The theater it was screened in used a DVD instead of a film, though, wtf. I was subjected to distracting glitches and compression artifacts every couple minutes, and resolution was pretty bad. What assholes.

Re: 2010 Movies thread
watched the remake of nightmare on elmstreet yesterday. I retells the story of the original quite well. Freddy is more vicious and less playfull than in the original. Not as good as the original, but holds its on and was pretty entertaining. Only jump scares though, that became pretty predictable after a while

Re: 2010 Movies thread
Inception is to cinematography what a fistful of MSG is to a bowl of rice. It hooks you up on 100% undiluted intensity enhanced by any means possible (one of the musical themes just keeps on pounding for what seems to be eternity) for pretty much the entire duration of the movie, which makes the watching experience very exhausting both mentally and physically. It's to be experienced at least once, because it's by all means an amazing movie, but stuff like this… is probably the closest analogy to a shot of heroin cinematography has offered on my memory.Mills wrote:Inception looks pretty intense visually.

Re: 2010 Movies thread
One of my favorite films, period. What amazes me is how many people have clearly attempted to imitate this, but failed (both in movies and in video games.) I think the only movie I've seen since that hits anywhere close is 'The Descent', and while I like that film, it's still not as good by any means as The Thing.Warp_Rattler wrote:I saw The Thing for the first time a few years ago. Why can't people figure out how to make more of this? Maybe its the same reason that every Terminator movie with a number after it isn't shit compared to the first one?

Everyone gets three guesses as to which one's the not-awesome part, and hopefully you won't need the first two.CMoon wrote:Warning: Mexploitation, titties and Steven Seagal (c'mon, at least two of those things are awesome!)
Danny Trejo is a staple of Rodriguez films, and the one actor I can think of who still manages to look fucking terrifying even when he smiles. This ought to be fun.
Re: 2010 Movies thread
Sharktopus ftw.
Let's get pumped for that Drop Dead Fred remake amirite?
But you had to give them your money, didn't you?
Now another abomination shall spew forth from Manoj's douchey orifice. And it won't be funny, because it'll be a tired used up joke by then.
And then the world will be a slightly worse place, and nuclear war will break out from the elevated sadness level. It's just inevitable now.
And humanity will be reduced to ashes, with not even a memory to mark its passing.
All because you paid to see this movie.
Why are you filled with so much hate and rage?

grrr if you didn't see his movie, maybe his career would have died. And this thrillogy would have died. And they would have tried another unnecessary adaption again in a decade and a half. And it would have had a chance of being crappy instead of shitty.CMoon wrote:I really wish someone else had directed this...but then again, there are only about 4 or 5 living directors right now I'm impressed by (IE I should have seen Inception.)

Re: 2010 Movies thread
A surprisingly bad film: Solomon Kane.
It has not only so many of the expected basic plot holes that the few non-holes look like an aerogel, but also, as a friend put it, a random plot (for example, the significant screen time of the completely useless witch, the master villain out of nowhere, the infernal presences in a generic "infidel" castle, and many more developments that would be too much of a spoiler to tell).
Moreover, instead of being agreeably badass the protagonist just suffers grimly for the whole film, from being cast out of a monastery (in the middle of winter!), to letting himself be robbed because he has a vow of nonviolence, to being crucified, to constantly thinking he'll lose his soul, to killing his father and brother.
Not that Solomon Kane's enemies are in any way cool or original: inferior direct knockoffs of the Balrog and the Uruk-Hai from The Lord of the Rings films and of the smoke creature from Lost are the most prominent monsters.
With the right attitude, one could watch Solomon Kane for laughs: almost everything is ridiculous, and the decent acting and good production values (especially make up, scenes and CGI) make the silliness stand out more than in a more common B-movie.

Re: 2010 Movies thread
A 2010 movie I've just watched is....well its a doc.....called 'Collapse' by a guy I've been following for a while now - Mike Ruppert.
Its about Peak Oil.
Its scary as hell.
To pracy the basic facts:- Ruppert states that the current World Population above 1 billion is only here due to the mastery of use of fossil fuels. The population is about 6.7billion.
At first you think "Is this really true?" Then you do an independant check on the World Population graphs since AD1 'til now. The default has been under 1 billion from the time of JC to roughly 1900, then it shoots straight up.
http://wilderdom.com/images/WorldPopulationGraph.jpg
Human population exhibits an J-shaped growth curve, and is accelerating.
All thanks to oil and natural gas, according to Mike Ruppert.
So what happens when all the oil and natural gas are gone? Well, if the growth really is due to fossil fuels as Mr Ruppert says, then the population crash will be monumental.
* Every calorie of food you consume takes 10 calories of fossil fuel to reach you.
* The World's economies are based on infinite growth. This of course is a bubble that will or already has burst, with the World now chasing a Derivatives deficit of 700 trillion dollar$. Infinite growth is of course impossible.
Infinite growth collides with finite energy.
* Forget about cars and trucks not being able to run anymore, the ramifications of 'no more oil and gas' are far more extensive than that. No more Worldwide electricity, no food reaching you unless you grow your own, and so on.
* Ruppert states that the alternate energy sources - wind, sea and solar are nowhere near enough to fill the huge gap left by no more fossil fuels.
With this knowledge, certain things start to make more sense. Billionnare's funding seed banks in remote Russian islands, weird disturbing Denver airport paintings of mass death. Electricity switchoffs in New York & London to see what the outcome would be. There's tons more but its early days in my small research on this inevitable situation...
In short, Ruppert predits a forced return to an agrarian society and a lot of anarchy and death during the transition.
