I did it for the lulz

Post by CMoon »

People use to make commercially viable products, now they just do it for the lulz:

Viral meme (double rainbow)

lulz response

I love how it's taken about 5 seconds for there to be an official web page and a t-shirt. How the hell can retail keep up with this? Is there validity to products/art/whatever that have a lifespan of maybe a month or two?

I appreciate your intellectual and lulz response.

Retail keeps up because it's mainstream and people grow tired of internet fads after about a week, unless they're constantly fed.

There is a fad for this time of thing? Did I wake up in the wrong decade?
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Given how quickly/cheaply you can get merchandise to market with iTunes and on demand custom print services, I'd say its quite valid all the way.

But I don't know if anyone is cashing in.

The point I was trying to make (beyond laughing at the double rainbow thing) was that people (regardless how talented) are going to the effort to spoof other things, often involving a great deal of effort. Now people have wasted their lives doing pointless things since the beginning of humanity, but its rather funny that it is being done with such competence (in general) at this point and there doesn't seem to be any real way for anyone to profit off of it.

I mean, wasn't there a 'long cat' book, or some other meme that clearly wasn't going to hold any sway minutes after its arrival?

How much was the "i can has cheezburgers" guy making per month again?

If you can harness even a sliver of that, it's worth it.

Just sucks for our culture that this is the message that drives monetary exchange.

The only thing to do to combat it is to summon a riposte from the renaissance.

Edit: I don't know if you knew this already, but YouTube makes popular uploaders its "partners" who then receive a stipend for every subscription to their channel they get.

What I love about the Youtueb Pahtnaz thing is that it offers me partnerships for videos I don't even own. Do not pass go, do not collect $100, go straight to jail!

with shit like zazzle and the like any one can jump on a meme and churn out cheap shitty product quick enough. They dont even need to contact the printers themselves. They just make an idea and get the printers to do all the work and then take there cut (which is dinky) quite a few games tee shirt shops work on this method.

edit: oh yeah and web optimsation. You want your site to be in the top 4 things that come up when you type in the world lol cat, Doubble rainbow or some other shit.

The I can haz cheezburger guy didn't really get rich off that one site. He made money because he was capitalizing off dozens of memes over time. Last I heard, every successful meme cash in is being orchestrated by one of just three people. I'm pretty sure the haz cheezburger guy is one of them.

The business has gotten pretty good at it.

It's all just Hot Topic without the bricks 'n mortar.
