The good just became better - the 2013 edition of my website

Post by Fudoh »

To celebrate the upcoming 2 year anniversary, I invested some hours in a major update to my "how to get classic videogames onto today's Plasmas and LCDs" website. Most users of the hardware board have probably visited the page before. Another visit is still highly recommended

July 22nd, 2010: major site update, removed redundant information, rewrote lots of material to reflect 2010's requirements
July 22nd, 2010: added a "monitor recommendation" section with links at the bottom of the page
July 22nd, 2010: added a "upscaler recommendation" section at the bottom of the page
July 22nd, 2010: added a little conclusion to every single device on this page
July 22nd, 2010: added the XSelect-D4, one of the greatest little connectivity helpers out there
July 22nd, 2010: added the LenKeng Series of videogame processors
July 22nd, 2010: added the Gefen Home Theater Plus video processor
July 22nd, 2010: added the Cinemateq Picture Optimizer Plus II video processor
July 22nd, 2010: added a short Radiance review to this page
July 22nd, 2010, added the Vigatec S1, the most expensive current video processor

Enjoy! Questions and recommendations are welcome as usual!

Great site indeed. Could I suggest it gets paginated somehow though? 8)

I can't count how many times I read and even "advertised" your page, goes without saying that it's the most useful resource on deinterlacing/scaling to be found on the whole worldwideweb. So, great job on the 2010 edit - I'm sure the added conclusions bit and the updated devices list will be of great help to many visitors new to the page. And good to see the X-Select on there too :)

(lol @ the S1)

If you want some usability feedback: I know the update log is essential, gripping reading, but even on this monitor (you know it's 1200 pixels tall) I'm hitting the Page Down key a few times before I see content. Pagination (is that what it's called?), definitely!

Other than that: Same great content, amazing same taste, now in a web sight! (TM) Really not much to be said about the best!

Oh snap, I didn't see that panel review upcoming. Wow, I was wondering when people were going to start making panels with localized dimming. It might be a killer!

LOL... I've had one for over a year now... the 55" XBR8. It has 112 RGGB clusters that are each monitored with two types of sensors to control the "zones" behind the LCD panel (S-LCD/PVA type). This model was released back in Oct 2008, but I had to wait 9 months for a good price. :D Sony skipped model year 2009 for a successor to the XBR8, and in 2010 we have the HX909 - closest model to a followup and is the first flat panel to score a 1200 line motion resolution score (no PDP has done this!).

I've seen the HX909 and was very happy with the picture. In 2009 Sony did not release any models with local dimming, scanning backlights, or BFI... So, kinda every other year for something special from Sony. ;)

Samsung has been making them (local dimming LED LCDs) since fall of '07 (no 2010 model though :?).

Wow, that's almost enough for Tetris! Or maybe for playing Atari games on. (Hehe, couldn't resist.)

I'm quite hyped about the idea though, especially if there can be smooth light ramps from one cluster to another. I'm not sure what these RGGB clusters are - is that code for a white patch "behind" an RGB cluster, or is the lighting element primarily through an extra green channel? Hmmm. Anyway, FEELS GOOD MAN.

Unfortunately the first input lag tests on the HX9 by AVS forum members showed pretty heavy delays, probably even higher than the 2008 XBR8 model. The HX9 is not yet available over here with Sony pushing back the release date over and over again (and rising the price over and over again, from 2900 to 3400 to 3900 Euro), so I'm a bit undecided after all. If it was at least a 55" model or is Panasonic's VT20/25 plasmas were available in 58" like the 2009 models (50" too small, 65" to large), the decisison would be easier....

So it's a movie set then. Ah well...I'm not sure Miami Vice or Hill Street Blues would see that much improvement...

An extremely well done resource. Very much appreciated for the gaming perspective especially.

Keep it going :)

Suggestions:

Links to recommended separate external articles/recommended reviews or features of interest.

Screens section - lcds, plasma, crt - principles, notable products - perhaps rely more on links for reviews, or simply based off own impressions and thoughts?

As/if articles get split up, or similarly organised, I feel summaries/conclusions and set-up recommendations will become extremely important in aiding navigation.

Perhaps a standardised tiered system of notation for notes on signal specific comments on 240p, 480i, 480p, HD, All could help summarise topics/features represented by each page/entry?

The site, or page  , got even better! I have read it, and I keep reading it, over and over. It has a lot of useful information, as has your other sites. Chapeau.

I seem to be the only one that likes the Page Down key more than lifting my right hand from the keybord towards the mouse to click on hypertext-links and wait for a page to load.
I feel lonely

hi I got a slightly off topic question but seeing your site you might be able to answer it:
is there a way to have classic gun(like nes or saturn gun) work on a LCD screen?
I've read that the gun can't work on LCD cause the refresh of the screen isn't the same kind of the CRT screens.
My question is,is it possible to emulate the CRT screen to make the gun work?

No, it's not possible.

There are LCD-enabled lightguns out there though (with sensor bars, but not the NES), so emulating a NES with lightgun support through such a gun (on a PC) should be possible as an alternative.

This wouldn't be a problem if there was something on those approximately two first pages worth interest.

Huge logo...check. List of updates that probably got rid of lots of horribly wrong information...check.

Really though, less scrollin' be good. Yeah, I PgDn like a pro but I don't honk for fat chicks...wait. You know what I mean.

update: 2013 edition is online, http://retrogaming.hazard-city.de/

added reviews for the Vigatec Dune and Dune-F, the other Crystalio II units and revamped some of the older reviews. Still ONE site (the index.html alone is nearly 600kb in size). Maybe I'll split it up for the 2014 edition.
