How angry does it make you when Cho Ren Sha isn't mentioned?
How angry does it make you when Cho Ren Sha 68K isn't one of the first things mentioned whenever the topic of "best PC shooters" is brought up?
Of course, that's just an opinion.

It doesn't make me angry at all because Cho Ren Sha is a bad game

Re: How angry does it make you when Cho Ren Sha isn't mentioned?
Meh. It's alright, not one of the best...

Moderately so. It is one of the best PC shooters around.
IMHO, it's better than most of the Touhou games too [well, UFO, Double Spoiler and Mystic Square are exempt from that bundling].

What's Cho ren Sha?
Re: How angry does it make you when Cho Ren Sha isn't mentioned?
Option Four
TBH I have it in a directory somewhere, only PC-made shooter I keep installed, but I don't play it very often.
Cho Ren Sha sounds like the brother of the bad guy from Hawaii Five-O.

Wasn't it originally a Sharp X68000 game? That would technically make it no more of a "PC shooter" than any other port.
I don't play it an awful lot, but do respect it for being wicked just the way I like my verticals (I like Psikyo). The presentation is good, except for the monotonous background. Recca's backgrounds look more varied, and it's a Famicom game.

One of my personal favorites. Monotonous background hardly bothers me, varied enemy design and patterns make every level feel distinctive. I also enjoy scoring system: it's not that complicated but still fun and addictive as hell.
And the music. Hot damn.
But tell you the truth, I thought Cho Ren Sha was a pretty well known shooter. Although I was suprised it didn't reach honourable mention at annual voting... Maybe I was wrong.

Between levels, sure. But the game has an annoying habit of throwing the same enemy formation at you multiple times in a row, but making it a mirror image so it feels different. It's like, "uh, I just did this."Ebbo wrote:varied enemy design and patterns make every level feel distinctive

Cho Ren Sha= Heavy Rapid Fire.
Ah, nothing like faking out bosses to kill them with their last attack.
Single BG aside, I dig the fast and furious action during the crazy traffic jam that is Level 3!

You never fought in the Amiga wars, did you? In certain frozen lands the name "PC" has almost political ringing to it, so you can't call some innocent Asian home computer a PC and get away with it. The scars left by the war have not yet healed... and the Earth has not forgotten.Ed Oscuro wrote:wats a X68000Obiwanshinobi wrote:Wasn't it originally a Sharp X68000 game? Note that I didn't specify Cho Ren Sha as being the single best, just one of the best. What aggravates me is how long it takes for it to even get mentioned whenever people bring good PC shooters up.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

It's because in this day and age a good shooter must have many slow bullets on screen at once, a scoring system and a small hitbox. Have you seen Crimson Clover? That's how good shooter looks like, don't you know?MathU wrote:Note that I didn't specify Cho Ren Sha as being the single best, just one of the best. Game has large pyopyo sense of destruction, but siterskain and platinedispostif games give me more enjoy.
Re: How angry does it make you when Cho Ren Sha isn't mentioned?
It's all about Cho Ren Sha, it's one of my all time favourite shmups hands down. The bosses, ship design, attack patterns and music are all exceptional (especially the music!).
It's one of the games that got me to start taking shmups seriously.

This would rank in my top 50 easily. Great Music, great art, good collision, lots of enemies, unique bullet patterns and clever power up system. I would be shocked if the X68000 could handle this game. The True final boss battle is one of the greatest moments in game history the music just gets more and more epic up to that fight then it climaxes with that song.
MathU you got good taste despite not liking Cave game's I guess their not for everyone. Have you played the flash game from the the creator of CRS? I'm one of the like 5 people that have put a PC game as their number1 top 25 pic on this forum. People sleep on the PC freeware doujin scene in general waaaaay too much.

It seems I was the only person have problem with the scoring system here.

No, it's true, I enjoyed a good Mac instead (at least until we got our own Wintelbocks), back in the good ole' days when 1984 wasn't like...Nineteen-Eighty Four.[/b] Or in the days before Steve Jobs came back and a nation learned how not to hold their phones (do not take a picture of the Foxconn worker leaping to his death)...wait, where were we?Obiwanshinobi wrote:You never fought in the Amiga wars, did you? But you're right. The XVI's badge doesn't say "Personal Computer," it says "Personal Workstation." My mistake.
