UPDATE!: Got a Customer Service Job at Albertsons!!

Post by dave4shmups »

ahem.

Ok so it's just a job bagging groceries at a local chain here in Denver called King Soopers, but it's a job! And it's one I have plenty of experience with!

They want me to come in on Monday to fill out the paperwork-and to discuss my availability on Sunday nights. This is what worries me, I go to a 20-somethings Church group every Sunday night from 7:00pm on, and that's the only time during the week that I can't work.

I can miss one meeting a month, but my therapist agrees that I need the socialization and spiritual fellowship I get from these meetings, so I hope King Soopers is flexible and I don't have to pass on this job.

But I guess I shouldn't worry about that for now-for now I'm just happy that I FINALLY have a job again! :D

my friend, a job is social interaction there!

I've been thru all sorts of odd jobs in my life, and even telemarketing felt like social interaction. Whoever out there who put his phone into a running vacuum cleaner to destroy a poor student's eardrum, I forgive you. ;)

Congrat.

Congraturation, dave! I hope to see more WTB's from you in the Trading Station rather than WTT's and FS's now!

I worked in grocery for a few months last year and this year, it's OK but you're on your feet the whole time. But if you're bagging, the time will go by quickly since the pace is non-stop and you'll lose track of time. I was lucky enough to be in the deli department, but it smells funny there and cleanup gets messy.

I'm glad to be out of that now, and right now I just started a job video game testing. It doesn't pay exceptionally well but I am having an absolute blast, the time just flies every day (plus I get to sit down in a comfy chair). I have plenty of desk space and I've set up one of my superguns with my NeoGeo MVS and I play with some guys during breaks. There's one guy in the next cubicle who can totally school me in Metal Slug, I was quite surprised. It's really cool though because the very first time we played it together, we were shooting, jumping, ducking, and bombing in the exact same places at the exact same time (at least in the first few stages)

Yes, you've come to join me in the world of grocery work :). Well, I hope you enjoy, and I hope they give you plenty of hours (unlike me...) And I'm sure you can get the hours off to go to a regular meeting. I had more or less the same thing happen to me at Safeway where I am, but it's all worked out now. And yes, working in a store is a great way to get to know people.

I have a full time job, but post on these forums while there (like right now), because I sit at a computer all day.

Right now I'm running super huge data processing programs, they need to be constantly monitored, so I browse the net on one monitor, and monitor the programs on the other one. It's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it :)

True a job is a sort of social interaction. If you do your job well, you will feel loved by your coworkers...but there is a danger in that Dave. If you ever lose your job due to layoffs or a punkass boss, the loss will feel like a kick in the teeth. Don't do anything rash, just hold your head up high and start shanking tires.

Yeah dave, don't forget that the job hunt doesn't end here.

I know you have a post-secondary degree, so you ought to be qualified to do a lot more. What was it you took, PoliSci and a minor in something else? Keep an eye out for government jobs, or maybe even a private company contracting for government.

Yes, but after several years of being out of a job due to an anxiety problem, which I've now learned how to manage wherever it pops up again, this is all I can get.

Employers want to know WHY you've been out of work for so long. Every 3 months I see the #1 Anxiety Specialist in Denver, and he told me to say that the absence was due to a family problem that's now under control-which is true, it's genetic, and it causes family stress. I just didn't want to say "Because of an anxiety problem", for fear of discrimination.

Plus, I have LOADS of bagging experience-even at this store! And they have such a low turn-over rate with their checkers that most of the ones who were there when I first worked at this store 10 years ago are still there!

I actually applied for a game testing job too, at a place here in town: www.ibeta.com , but didn't get the job.

I agree with you all about social interaction, but I need the spiritual part of that, too. I have no problem socializing with non-Christians, but I really need the spritual socialization as well, and I simply cannot give up the Sunday night meetings, except on very rare occasions. The spiritual fellowship feeds my soul; I need it. And, more or less, that's what I need to politely explain to the manager, and others at this store when I go in to fill out the paperwork on Monday.

I just hope that they are flexible on that-after all, they're only working me part time, and even if it was full-time, Sunday nights after 6:30pm is the ONLY time that I put on my application that I'm not available all week. So we'll see what happens, I'll definately keep everyone updated!

And yes, I will work on my Saturn and DC collection-although I need to save up some money towards moving out on my own and becoming independent.

Oh I know, as my dad always says, "You're not married to it". I definately plan to keep looking for jobs beyond this one, but even a few months with King Soopers would get my resume back on track, IMO. I am optimistic about my future; I have great research and writing skills, and I love video games.

I'm not that interested in Government work-the Japanese Embassy here in Denver hires from time to time, but I'm not interested in much else. I don't like either political party enough to join it, and in terms of foreign policy-well the world is SUCH a stinkin' mess nowawdays that I'm not interested in that line of Poli Sci work either.

Plus, to really get the most out of a BA in Poli Sci, you really need at least an MA-and I have NO desire to get back into the world of long-arse paper writing, and reading until I need a guide dog. I went through hell on earth with my anxiety to get my college degree-although I did have a lot of fun too-and I just have no desire to go back to school.

If this was 20 years ago, and I could make good money as a Sovietologist (yes that was an academic job title back in the day!) writing articles about what the Big Bear might do next, then I'd go for it. But right now? Forget it, Poli Sci just isn't my passion anymore. I have no regrets, I got my degree in what I wanted it in at the time, plus there are plenty of ex-Poli Sci grads who work in the private sector-example: my dad, who's been in Insurance for over 30 years now.

yea, I understand what you mean by spiritual level.

Although I'm not with any religious group, I do have a "conviction" to fall back on whenever I feel like I'm without a purpose. I'm gonna be rich and put all of those kids in my old neighborhood (well, probably their children, by the time I do get rich :D) into college. YARRRR!!!! DETERMINATION!!!! FOR GONDOR!!!!

I'm pretty sure you will also find people outside of the church circle where you can converse intelligently and deeply with.

If you

a) REALLY like games
b) Can elaborate about what makes a game good
c) Know something about the videogame market

You can write well, I assume from your education, so you should try to apply for an entry level producer. Big companies hire entry level producer (read: gameplay designer) based on these qualifications.

Dave you could also try hooking up with a PR firm. Try asking your friends if you can put them down as references. It especially helps if you have older friends with a stable career that can vouch for you. This way your empty resume won't look so bad. Don't underestimate what your college education(even if it's liberal arts) can get you.

You can be an officer in any of the armed forces. Plus your anxiety will keep you off the front lines so no worries there.

Also consider a sales job. Why are you bagging groceries, when people will seriously consider hiring you as manager of that same store? You could also sell cars. People see that college degree and they will beg you to sell cars for them.

Congrats Dave. I know it feels good to finally get a job. With my new job (and my wife's new job) we're on a good life high right now.

And JP, once I can pay a couple bills off, I hope to get that Saturn shmup collection going (beyond my pathetic 3 imports) soon!

Computer Sci degree will get you a programmer job or a project manager job (tough stretch here), but not a producer job.

Junior Producer/Game designer here means the guy who determine what feature to put in a game, not the coder. However, senior producer is no longer a game designer but more a businessman, so he needs education/experience in business admin.

From what I heard at work it seems that these people come from all wakes of life. But they all have really good narrative and analysis skills.

Dave, you should try working for a gas station. Most of them pay well above minimum wage and the work isn't too relaxed or too aggressive. I used to work at a video game store but now i'm at a Chevron and i wouldn't go back to retail for the world. So if bagging groceries doesn't work out give it a go!

I am STOKED! :D King Soopers was not felixible on Sunday nights whatsoever, so I applied at several other places in town this week, one of which is another grocery store: Albertsons.

They did an interview with me today, and hired me on the spot! I have to go in on Monday to fill out all the paper work and do the drug test.

This is in Customer Service, so even though it's part time, it pays better then being a bagger!

I also did a group interview with Khols; they fine, like Albertsons is, with me having Sunday nights off. They are supposed to get back to me middle of next week if they're interested. So, if they present me with a better offer, pay-wise, I can take that instead!

But what a relief to FINALLY have a job nailed down for the first time in several years! :D

Thanks iatneH , but I would be biting off more then I could chew if I bought a Supergun and started getting into PCBs at this point in my life.

And Cirtuitface, the first job I had out of college was at a convienience store/gas station. It was WAAAY too frantic for my tastes-I seriously felt a good deal of my old panic-hyperventilation coming back, and as my Pyschotherapist has told me, that's when it's time to leave-and I did!

Just be careful with the whiny, bitchy ladies who believe they deserve to have their flabby asses kissed because they spend so much for so long at Albertson's.
