Question about Genesis cartridge

Post by indutrial »

Hello,

I have a small problem that I'd like to fix. I ordered a used copy of Grind Stormer/V-V for the Genesis and I got one of those defective Tengen copies that randomly freezes on both of my Genesis consoles. Does anyone know where I can find a walkthrough on how to remove the flash and solder it into another 1MB cartridge? Also, how does one know which Genesis games are 1 MB large? I have a few other game cartridges that I'm willing to sacrifice for this project, but I'd rather order a really cheap (but reliable) one to rip open.

Thanks

I know this is a semi-old post but... I've read some one used a copy of Steel Empire for this same project and it worked.

On another note, I have 2 copies of the game. One is defective and one (so far) works fine. I cracked both open and noticed that:

A:) The defective cart appears to have some oxidation on the PCB as well as a small resistor positioned vertically similar to an Insector X cart I have. (maybe this is relevant as Insector is an older game?)

B:) The working cart has a larger resistor (not sure if this is even the right term) than the defective one and its soldered in a different spot on the PCB, horizontally. I also opened my Gauntlet 4 cart (Tengen as well) and the PCB is the same as both Grind Stormer carts but it's resistor matches the working Grind Stormer cart. The Grind Stormer cart was a former Blockbuster rental and it looks like it's been put through a war so I feel semi-confident it's good.

I wonder if the 1st run utilized an undersized resistor which caused those carts to overheat, damaging the PCB?
(I'm not too knowledgeable with electronics so if this isn't plausible please don't kill me!!) =)

Hope this helps, there isn't much info on this issue. After my first cart died it drove me crazy. I bought a Jp copy since those are error free.
