What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Currently I've got the following on my plate:
-3D Dot Game Heroes (about halfway through, need to finish this at some point)
-Crackdown 2 demo (enjoyed the first one, I don't think this one will be breaking much new ground but should still be fun)
-Super Mario Galaxy 2 (about 20 stars in, been playing for a few minutes here and there as time permits)
-Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time (A brief note to Ratchet: Your buddy's been kidnapped by the Zoni, and there's a good chance you're going to have to blast through half a zillion baddies to get him back. Maybe you should consider bringing along that upgraded RYNO IV you traveled all over the galaxy finding the holo-plans for instead of some wimpy little constructo-pistol...)

Just finished off my 1000/1000 attempt with Mass Effect. Brilliant game, and I am looking forward to another run next year when the third game comes out. Epic three game story ftw.
Just restarted Blue Dragon the other day. Good clean RPG fun.

Hey, I just bought Melty Blood Act Condenza. I've never played this series before, so I have to get used to it to really enjoy it. So far, it seems cool.ROBOTRON wrote:Melty Blood AA - PS2
I completed the first Luminous Arc last year. I spent a lot of time playing it while on vacation for a month in Japan with nothing to do at my in-laws' house besides enjoying the spring weather. I like Luminous Arc 2, but not as much as the first game. The first game was fairly flawed, but I think I like the characters of that game better than those of the second. Still, it's a cute strategy game. I'm playing this game, Disgaea, and Super Rogbot Taisen W (the one with the Lion Voltron) on my DS and bounce around between these games quite a bit. I play a lot more strategy games than I do shmups these days.professor ganson wrote:Are you enjoying these? I loved Luminous Arc 2. I'm really hoping that part 3 gets localized.

Yeah, I've been playing a lot more srpgs myself lately. Just got back into shmups the past week or so. So you're playing Super Robot Taisen W? You know some Japanese? I've been replaying Drone Tactics on the DS on hard. It's taking a while to get hard, but things are starting to heat up a bit. The battles tend to be too long, the mandatory mini-games are silly, and the story always fails to draw me in. Otherwise, it's a nice game.greg wrote:I completed the first Luminous Arc last year. I still haven't played through the first Luminous Arc. I'll have to get around to that.

I've spent the last two days twatting around with the slot machines in DQV, and am still 20,000 tokens shy of getting my hands on a Gringham Whip. I am a thrice-double ass.

Splatterhouse 2 copy + pasta:
First time I've played a console game in aaages, seems like.
I got the Japanese version. So far:
Yea:
Cool graphical style (even if it doesn't always come through)
Awesome beatdowns and the humorous bits never seem stale to me...I love the little scene before the first boss. Nice changeup in gameplay from place to place, though it does throw out the "your controls are reversed!" thing a bit quickly. (That's the only time I hope, though I found myself jumping into the reverser spirits to "lock" in the reversed controls while I went over pits.)
On Normal setting, not too tough, after a couple plays I was breezing through the first three or four levels. I stopped off at the second form of the stage four boss.
Nay:
*Slowdowns! In the underground corridor branch (you know the one) I got it pretty bad when five enemies or so were onscreen. The good ol' Mega Drive is more capable than that!
*Some graphics (swamp forests) are muddy and the color palette seems...kind of bad, though I can figure out what I'm looking at, at least.
*Junk controller I got with the used MD I finally opened up to play the game, since my Mega Jet doesn't seem to be giving a video signal or something. Was a real chore to pull of simple jumps. (On that note, I need to see if I can't find the Jet's power supply.)
*Also, I'm sad that more people weren't able to see the awesomeness that is the original release's artwork.
*But the title screen says: SPLATTERHOUSE Part II, and the "Part II" reminds me of the Ghostbusters logo, blue glow and all.
Overall, often looks hideous (not always in a good way), but it's fun and controls very well, which is what I wanted. A bit of a disappointment visually after how good Naughty Graffiti generally looks on the Famicom. Take away the gore and it's a pretty simple game though. I have been disappointed at times (like in the fourth boss fight's first form) how simple some of the patterns are to defeat; the game feels best when it's faster-paced as when you have to jump over lots of spikes or the screen is automatically scrolling. This makes me interested in checking out Part III again, because I remember that I didn't think I'd like it as much as Part II, but I know that one has a lot more moves and some other ideas going for it.
Checking in with West Mansion, a lot of the writeups on characters are news to me. Some of the confusion there simply doesn't exist when playing this game. But other stuff strikes me as complexity I've just skipped over: I thought you kicked the fish off, but I didn't try shaking. The difficulty for the hanging babies fight seemed right, but I never used the weapons, just knocked them down the old-fashioned way (haven't you ever had to knock babies out of the ceiling? It's hard to sleep with them mewing and puking). It's also clearly a brain that you have to bash in at the end of the third stage, instead of the weird shrimp fetus thing that shows up in the US / PAL release.

Make sure to play the JP version if possible. The US one alters the spinning kick, and pretty much precludes using any of the other moves. JP one is great fun on harder difficulties, you really need to play intelligently to make the time limits or else suffer the BAD END.Ed Oscuro wrote:This makes me interested in checking out Part III again, because I remember that I didn't think I'd like it as much as Part II, but I know that one has a lot more moves and some other ideas going for it.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I finally found the expansion for Total Annihilation: Kingdoms. The original TA game is probably my favorite game of all time, and without a doubt the game I've spent the most time with. Sadly I can't seem to get the expansions working with Vista?
TA:K is not as awesome, but the expansion adds quite an intresting campaign.

I've been playing Bioshock, and loving every bit of it.
I just don't like the fact that the game dont penalize the player for dying. You can die and nothing serious happens.

Quasi-RTS that flew under my radar for years. Gotta love the sub missions.

I've been playing a lot of Buster Bros. (the original) via Capcom Puzzle World on the PSP. Yeah, I've played the others a bit, too, but the original's still really, really fun.

Eh? Is there a way to turn off the Vita Chambers?Rob wrote:vita chambers OFF = game overShatterhand wrote:I just don't like the fact that the game dont penalize the player for dying. You can die and nothing serious happens.
I just finished the game, and all the time I played it I was thinking the Vita Chambers should be savepoints, like the typewrites from the original Resident Evil. The game would be a lot better this way.
Even with Vita Chambers off, why should I not save the game at every 30 seconds?
edit: I forgot to add I've also been playing Ninja Spirit, and hating every bit of it.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Because it's bothersome and feels cheap. The savepoint idea is best, though. Being able to save anywhere in action games always feels cheap.Shatterhand wrote:Even with Vita Chambers off, why should I not save the game at every 30 seconds?
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Replaying MGS2... I always fail to recall exactly how cringe-inducing a character Raiden is.
Total stranger: "Interesting codename." Raiden: "Makes up for the boring one my parents gave me!"
The game is the opposite though, always great fun to sneak about causing trouble. It's like a playable slasher flick! (the way I approach it >_>) "We've got to get this bastard now!" *steps on claymore* "AIEEE!"

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
After having destroyed everything in Disgaea AOD I've moved onto Disgaea 2 DHDs. It's odd to hit an enemy for 30 damage instead of 2,000,000,000. Good fun so far and there seems to be a lot more random elements to the game. I was also pleased to see the list of optional enemies has gone from 13 to 26.
Also playing the crap out of DJ Max Fever which is superb. Still having trouble with a lot of the songs on 4BM and just about scraping through some of the early tracks on 6BM. Just about managed to clear a few missions too.
