DS shooters: I can budget for two

Post by Pulstar »

Any recommendations on what that pair should be?

I have Starfox & the shooters within R.G.C., but how about something grand that's not stylus-heavy? Got some ideas, just very few friends into the system who can offer me many suggestions.

Thanks for any ideas.

There's always the cool Arika produced "Ketsui Death Label" bundled set with a Superplay DVD included worth getting for your NDS/Lite/DSi/DSi XL. Admittedly, it plays easier on the bigger DSi XL rather on the smaller DS Lite handheld.

Or trying to score either of developer Shin'en's NDS shmup titles of Nanostray & Nanostray 2.

Space Invaders Extreme 1 and 2. They play differently enough and are good enough to warrant getting both. If you really only want one though then I recommend Space Invaders Extreme 2 with Nanostray 2.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Space Invaders Extreme 2 is mastery, and Gradius on Konami Arcade Classics is a pretty good deal considering that game was bargain binned pretty early, so you can get it cheap.

I can't think of anything I really like on DS except Ketsui (on DS) and it gave me early arthritis.

add the $5 shooter metal torrent to the rec list. You can most likely get it on top of the others.

This is my problem exactly, I get really fucking bad thumb pain playing it for a while, but shooters on the go have been a love of mine since Solar Striker, and if things work out as hoped job-wise, I shall be depending on the DS far more than I have been up to now.

Really appreciate all the suggestions from everyone, they are helping me to near closer to my goal.

iI have played all the shooters on the ds. And imo ketsui death label and XG blast are the pick of the (small) bunch.
You should check out neods 2.0 it can run neo geo shmups like blazing star, pulstar, strikers1945 plus and prehistoric isle.
And theres a couple of shmups on game centre cx and its sequel

Seriously if you can swing it, grab a capable iPhone or iPod touch. Cave looks to be leaning in that direction for porting it's catalog. Espgaluda 2 is already available and it's fantastic.

The touch screen interface is incredible for the genre and it completely solves the cramped finger issue shmups have on portables.

The iPhone needs to be 3GS or better. I'm not certain which iPod correlates.

I never would have imagined actually. Sounds pretty interesting, even though I'm unlikely ever to own the mentioned hardware.

@Nick -I like the sound of that. Thanks! I do miss Pulstar et al when I leave home.

Think I have more or less made my decisions now so cheers to everyone for the input.

Um.

Bangai-o Spirits?

You could almost count Meteos as a shooter - that's great.

I second SIE (haven't played the 2nd).

Don't forget Contra IV (obviously not a shmup, but neither is Star Fox so I'm guessing you're flexible).
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

I haven't forgotten Bangai-o -a friend recommended that to me a while ago & recently re-iterated it.

Having fun exploring some of the suggestions here I must say.

Oh and Contra 4 I more or less beat for fun these days (maybe not hard mode). It was a superb birthday present when it came out though! I nearly mentioned it in the original post and you're right, I don't mind a bit of deviation, although I'm guessing that strictly shooting games would get me the most qualified opinions here. :)

Both SI Extreme games are good stuff. One warning. They don't use the stylus, but they require looking at both screens at times (especially the second one).

Geometry Wars: Galaxies

Uses either the stylus+dpad or dpad+facebuttons (like robotron).

Better than everything mentioned, except Contra IV.

Thanks for the heads up on NeoDS- got Blazing Star, Last Resort and Zedblade wherever I go now!
And yes, Ketsui Death Label is leagues ahead of the rest. Geometry Wars Galaxies, XG Blast! and Big Bang Mini are also loads of fun.

I allow myself auto-fire only when playing handheld shooters because it's already not "perfect" IMO by playing on pad or on a big screen so there's no need to kill your hands for a quick fix. Plus my right thumb/palm are shot from years of gaming so I have to play games on stick to not upset my hands :(

You can't go wrong with Ketsui (especially if you don't have the PCB or a 360). I also recommend Gradius on the Konami Collection. I just bought it used 2 days ago at Gamestop and am loving it. The SI's are also great and Bangai-O is a fun "break" from shooters also.

I really want that GG+ game but I wouldn't value my desire for it to be $50 right now, heh.

If your DS can take GBA carts, grab a copy of Gradius Galaxies. It goes for $3-5 if you find it at a Gamestop. I honestly can't think of anything else that hasn't been mentioned already.

The PSP is the best portable for shmups on the go. I've been playing the hell out of Vulgus, Varth (in tate, even), Konami shooters, and R-Types in between classes and at work. If someone would just release a Toaplan arcade compilation, I could die a happy man.
