Hmm, I'll be interested to see the Tekken 6 only cos of the London guys I know are there, but missed the live stream. I saw Inti (known as Masamune here) the other week and he said he was flying over to play. Hope he did well.
EDIT: Just watching the SFIV live stream now. Love fighting games, hate fighting game commentary. Americans love to gay it up.

Re: Evo2010
Vangief and Gamerbee's matches against Justin Wong were awesome. Wong tried to make the comeback but got eliminated. Gamerbee's Adon is sick and Vangief's Zangief is serious business.
Re: Evo2010
last year I watched the whole thing. This year im not as hyped. Did catch the Banana Ken vs some dude i dont remember playing mecha gief. Would love to see the SSF IV finals but theyre are monday morning 7am here and by that time I will be at work
last year they had a deal with some site, G4 or Spike, I dont recall, where you could re-watch the matches but it was VERY limited and only SF IV. Anyone know if there will be something similar this year?

Re: Evo2010
I caught the Wong versus Vangief match yesterday, missed the Gamerbee match. I've also been watching for most of the afternoon, but some games like Tekken I don't much care for. I could probably use to spend a bit more time playing fighters (BlazBlue was the last one I picked up) but I don't have anywhere near the skills needed to compete even locally, much less at a level like that. MvC3 looks like it should be fun too, although I've never been all that great at dealing with really fast games like that.
Kind of bummed that the live stream cut out right at the end of the final SSFIV match (probably got overloaded.)

I'm just glad Ortiz didn't win in the end. Good match regardless though. They lost the stage camera apparently.

Re: Evo2010
So Garu and Daigo take out Melty and SSF4. Japan strong. Still.. I'm surprised Garu managed to pull through with the amount of difficulty he was having with the PS2 version of Melty. Apparently the arcade version's fairly different. VERY impressed by Kusanagi's playing, especially considering he's from Mexico and the exposure of Melty down there is minimal.
If NZ actually had Melty players (I don't know if there's still Australian Melty players but I doubt it) I'd definitely take it up.
Also surprised to see Justin Wong be eliminated so early.. it didn't seem like he really had his head in the game this time. It was nice to see some pad players, too (Shizza and Vangief, possibly some others but I can't recall).
Overall, great matches all around.

I see a lot of the matches on youtube now. Looks like it was grabbed from the stream. Will be watching all the SSF IV stuff tonight. Mike Ross sticking with E. Honda was a surprise for me? Anyone know what character Justing Wong played this time?
Re: Evo2010
Justin Wong was playing Rufus, at least in the two matches he lost to Vangief and Gamerbee.
Re: Evo2010
for anyone interested, who like me, missed the whole damn thing due to real life
look up the user 'evo2kvids' on youtube. theres a LOT of SSF IV and Tekken 6 vids from evo 2010, and the MvC3 exhibition. looks like hes still uploading

Re: Evo2010
They appear to be direct feed videos too, not just videos recorded off the live stream.

I attended and competed myself this year (if anyone caught the very beginning of the stream, I was on the second match of TvC sucking big time, lol). Went 0-2 both in TvC and in SSF4, but it was an amazing experience. I'm hoping to improve and do better next year.

Just got home from Vegas, I attended as a spectator to cheer for my friends and GET HYPE. Spent more time getting hype and was too hungover to watch the finals.

Re: Evo2010
the ssfiv match between lamerboi (guile) and daigo (ryu) was so intense. i've never seen a guile player be aggressive like that before. that was one of the best highlights this year for me. it's a shame that lamerboi got counter picked after that and jewed. i usually absolutely hate guile players for just playing like the safe gay turtles they usually are, but this guy didn't deserve to be outed like that by another player and counter picked. not cool man.
oh, and i still don't see why so many people give a crap about justin wong, that kid sucks if you ask me. he seems to be the overrated "ikaruga" player of fighting games if you ask me. just straight up overrated, like ikaruga. there's a lot of other mentionable players that deserve attention. kudos to gamerbee and vangief for being badasses. vangief using a pad and somehow was nailing those links like nothing and glow fisting fireballs, what a pro. gamer bee taking out akuma so fast was pretty impressive. that strider of clockworks screwed yipes (if i recall right) over so hard. air throw into the doctor doom assist was genius and caused such a hard lol.
marn got taken out of ssfiv so early despite winning devastation, that was odd. i also thought it was funny how he promised never to lose a tvc tourny, and kept that promise.
no surprise daigo won ssfiv. but the huge surprise was a zangief win sf2hdr. those were some serious piledrivers.
can't wait till next year

Agreed.nash87 wrote:overrated, like ikaruga.
Can't really agree that he sucks. He's not the best of the best and perhaps his fanbase is a little overzealous (they've got his back, yo) but I've seen him play extremely well on certain games. SF3 he plays pretty cheap Chun-Li tactics (and gets punished accordingly) and SFIV doesn't seem to be his strong point.nash87 wrote:justin wong, that kid sucks if you ask me.
Marvel vs Capcom 2 on the other hand - well, if he's only truly great at one thing, then that's probably it. His ability on that game is incredible.

I do not understand why evo doesn't have Virtua Fighter, Guilty Gear or even BlazBlue. Instead they focus so much on SFIV which has to be the most boring fighter at the entire tournament. I can't even stand watching it.

He is more talkative than the rest of the nerds so he is a lot more marketable also he has 'the match' with daigo with the first real nail biting parry. after seeing that for the first time I went back and played a lot of SF3.3 . I think if i was in the top 30 players of a fighter like SFIV or something I would be way more marketable than him since i can talk shit all day and I think im quite entertaining. Also people like me (ego boosts to level 3 from 2) I never met the guy but he comes across as quite arrogant. fighting games need more characters like him though to make in between matches and actually talking to these guys entertaining and no I dont mean the smack talking of pringles and shit.

There was a fairly large 'unoffical' BB tourney going on in the back corner the first 2 days that was pretty interesting to watch.
Marvel Vs Capcom 3 looks atrocious. Was not even worth the trouble of trying to get a spot to play it, but then again I didn't like the first two and I suck at fighting games.
Props to the people who brought the candy cabs.

Re: Evo2010
Nobody in the US plays Virtua Fighter, they've had GG in the past (just last year in fact) but had to have room for other games this year (probably Melty Blood), and the BB community bowed out since nobody wanted to play CT with CS out (arcades or "otherwise").kengou wrote:I do not understand why evo doesn't have Virtua Fighter, Guilty Gear or even BlazBlue. And I loved MvC3 from the matches I played. I think a big problem was that they didn't have anything there explaining moves or even how the controls worked, so you'd sit there and play and have literally no idea what you were doing. Luckily I knew a few people who had some time with the game, so I was able to get a handle on it fairly quickly. I do agree with some of the sentiment from people who played the E3 build that the lack of universal airdashing in the Evo build really sucks. But these sorts of things are what loketests are for.
Re: Evo2010
You have to be pretty clueless to think Justin Wong is "overrated." With the exception of his horrible day 2 at Evo 2K10, he bodies the US for free.
Re: Evo2010
Seriously, even Daigo said that J.Wong is way above other US players in terms of skill. It's cool to hate on J.Wong but face it, he could whip 99% of US players in just about any SF game you could think of.mannerbot wrote:You have to be pretty clueless to think Justin Wong is "overrated." As far as I've seen, US and Japan are pretty even in terms of skill at the moment at SSF4. I watched NSB 15 just a week before, and the competition there was pretty fierce as well. Daigo lost to the best Chun player in Japan. Team GODSGARDEN almost got OCV'd by a Juri. Was pretty good stuff.

Re: Evo2010
I found the match between him and that Dhalsim player to be something of a bore, though...then again I have a particular personal dislike of "keep-away" tactics. Of course I don't like Guile either (how he's remained as popular as he has over the years simply astounds me), never thought I'd find myself rooting for one.nash87 wrote:i've never seen a guile player be aggressive like that before. that was one of the best highlights this year for me.

Re: Evo2010
Lamerboi picked that name for a reason, he loves the lame. In SFIV he'd try to time out every round.
That said, with the new and improved Guile, I expected him to do much better than he did at Evo this year. Playing as godawful as he did (by his standards) he still kept it exciting, so we just have to wonder what could have been if he was on. Also I don't really get why people think strong zoning is boring, but different strokes for different folks I guess.
Daigo looked ridiculously tentative in that NSB final against Y24 but yeah impressive showing by that Chun.

I can appreciate the skill required to do it well, but when one player is kept in a position where it's pretty much impossible for him to attack for most of the match I find myself (strong) zoning out.mannerbot wrote:Also I don't really get why people think strong zoning is boring, but different strokes for different folks I guess.

Mike Ross makes me want to pick up Honda.
Re: Evo2010
It's just a different kind of fighting. Personally I hate all the speed/combo characters, but that's been a popular mode since the marvel games and on. The great thing about SSF4 (and many others of course) is that they can keep the game balanced and incorporate a lot of play modes, since we don't all want to play fighting games the same way.BulletMagnet wrote:I can appreciate the skill required to do it well, but when one player is kept in a position where it's pretty much impossible for him to attack for most of the match I find myself (strong) zoning out.mannerbot wrote:Also I don't really get why people think strong zoning is boring, but different strokes for different folks I guess. It's like the stereotypical "really big guy simply holds arm out and keeps flailing shrimpy guy from touching him" imagery - effective tactic, but not exactly an exciting fight.

Re: Evo2010
I'm sure it's more engrossing to actually do it, having to time all the pokes/projectiles/etc. to keep the other guy from approaching you at all, but I simply can't stand watching it (and trying to deal with it in-game is a royal pain too, especially with certain characters) - matches whose outcome depend primarily on chip damage and mis-timed jumps just don't appeal to me at all.CMoon wrote:It's just a different kind of fighting.
I can get behind this to some extent too - seeing the same dial-a-combos used over and over again can be plenty dull as well.Personally I hate all the speed/combo characters, but that's been a popular mode since the marvel games and on.
