WTF moments in shmups (on-topic this time!!!)

Post by Zweihander »

This thread has been attempted before at some point, but always ends up becoming a discussion of bullet patterns and whatnot.

WTF moments are:
*plot twists
*weird shit going on in the background
*climactic endings
*dramatic moments
*completely unexpected final battle
*moments in dialogue, be they engrish or non.
EDIT: *anti-climactic moments (ex: RTF's default floating-in-space ending)

and so forth.

WTF moments are NOT:
*bullet patterns and any variation thereof, no matter how spectacular they may be.
*how hard it is to dodge/avoid obstacles and/or walls in certain shmups
*400-hit attacks in Bangaioh

so, i propose we keep this ON-TOPIC. i love swimming through tunnels of bullets while avoiding the random bullets bouncing around the screen at the same time, but that's not what this thread is about.

my WTF moments:

*the plot twists at the end of Einhander, Giga Wing 2, and Philosoma.

*the final boss of Gunbird 2. o_O;; i'm still weirded out by that one...

*the ending of Ikaruga. total "holy fscking WTF!!!" moment. sad, but dramatic moment IMO.

*the "you become a bydo ship" ending in R-Type Final. also to be noted, the background of the default level 7. surprised it didn't get rated "Teen" for that alone. o_O

*the final boss of Shienryu/ Geki-oh: Shooting King. final boss comes out of nowhere and nukes the supposed final boss. it made me rofl. also, the omake modes in Geki-oh. Goth mode or whatever it's called, and comedy mode, were especially twisted. XD

*the ammount of blood in Espgaluda. very reminiscent of Area 51 (the arcade game), with people exploding into piles of blood. XD and hearing the dolls from the last level squeak when you kill them. o_O

*the fact that you fight a cheesy Ultraman knock-off early on in Bangaioh. also, the dialogue before the "fights" with the green core-things. XD

*the entire last level of Rez. that was a mind-trip with all the symbolism. also to be noted, the beautiful cinemas of Eden re-materializing at key points in the final battle.

well, anyone? let's hear those stories. ;)

The first boss in Salamander 2 munching down what you think is the first boss.

The "wire-frame" graphics that fade in when you fight the final boss of the second level in Raidant Silvergun.

The plot twist at the end of Bokan Desu Yo's special mode (I don't entirely understand what's going on, but you end up versus someone you wouldn't expect).

Almost everything that happens in a Parodius or Game Tengoku.

Your WTF moments made me crack up, Zweihander.

I would add:
Shikigami no Shiro II- 1-1 boss
Border Down- the country music
Shikigami no Shiro- the whole game (those guys were on drugs)

Yeah, I was just gonna say, all the Choaniki games are all pretty much WTF moments from beginning to end.

Just thought of another great one:

The teddy bear in Alien Soldier crying "help!", then driving the speed boat for you, when you rescue him... oookaaaaay...

My major WTF is why, in the American port of R-Type Final, did they replace the ending theme song with a Blue Man Group song?

Other WTFs include:
- G-Darius: all the bosses are fish or other marine creatures. WTF is the Embryon supposed to be?
- Cover art for Mobile Light Force 1 & 2. As Brandon Sheffield from Insert Credit put it, "Horrid Charlie’s Angels style box art, which is actually credited to a graphics design company, if you can believe it. If you ever meet someone from the Moore Design Group, kick them right where they keep their genitals. It’s the only way they’ll learn."
- Hearing barking dogs ("arf-arf!") in the heat of battle in Radiant Silvergun.
- The hidden level in the middle of level 4 in the Sega Master System version of R-Type.
- No nudity in Choaniki. With all the suggestive visuals, the gay community demands some explicit, no-holds-barred yaoi, even if it must be pixelated.
- Earning high score rankings on some games and entering "FUK" or "SEX" as your initials are not allowed. I know G-Darius doesn't allow this, and possibly the Cave games.
- The Japanese narrator speaking Engrish in the intro movie sequence in Gaia Seed. This is Engrish at its worst.
- Secret movie of Rizer against the dog in Contra: Shattered Soldier.
- Unlocking Speedos for your characters in Neo Contra. This isn't "Contra-niki."
- All the various nooks and crannies in which we have placed our Rez Trance Vibrator. [/b]

visuatrox, i was so close to blocking Cho Aniki out of my memory completely... but now that you've given me that horrific flashback... yes, the opening cinema ALONE for Cho Aniki was a WTF moment...

professor ganson - the only WTF moments i had during the Shiki games were when i played the american versions and heard the terrible voice overs. >_> and you're right about Border Down's country music... that made me raise an eyebrow. while on the country subject, i sorta WTF'd when i first saw the Phalanx cartridge. o_O;;

chimpp - i thought RTF's american ending music was decent, but by no means climactic. ~_~ would have done better as level music, since that game had barely any memorable tracks. and my first experience with Darius was Darius Gaiden, which did weird me out a bit upon reaching the first boss. XD by the time i played G-Darius, i was already used to the fact that all the bosses were giant fish. ^^; i agree with the MLF cover art, as well... horrid, horrid horrid. >_<

What I meant to say about G-Darius is that with all the bosses being fish, the WTF moment is the Embryon. I forget exactly which zone it's in, but it's the last boss in the very middle of the last zones. All the bosses look too cool, even if they're fish, and then you fight this pansy-looking Embryon which just looks silly. It looks silly, but damn is it hard to beat!

The endings to just about any Taito-developed shmup. And I'll throw in Border Down here as well.

A guy at EB Games told me that they put that cover on Phalanx in order to trick people into thinking it was some kind of adventure game. My response to that was: WTF?

Yes, how could I forget the voice overs?! Maybe I'm the only one who thinks that the developers of Shiki 1 were on acid or some other hallucinagen.

Zombie Nation is a pretty WTF game.

Okay, my ship is a fucking HEAD. What the FUCK!?

lol too bad the game isn't any fun. I put it on every now and then just to get a good laugh out of it! hahah look at that guy's head!

I said WTF when I heard Border Down's music. Why the hell is this in a shmup? It's like the lamest music i've ever heard, anywhere, ever. It's like the wimpiest shit ever. Elevator music would kick its ass.

1) The final boss of Battle Garegga. Just when you THINK you've destroyed it and the BGM stops, it's not really over.
2) Cho Aniki: EVERYTHING.
3) Metal Black:
*When things that look like giant screws start to fall out of the mothership.
*The SFX that happen after you destroy a boss.
*Background during the final boss battle.
*And ESPECIALLY, the sequence immediately after the final boss' demise.
4) Xevious 3D/G: The sound used for the explosion of the 2nd boss. It sounds like either a bucket of bricks being dropped on the floor or Tekken's Jack falling over.
5) Shikigami no Shiro 1: Special effects used during the final boss battle.
6) R-Type: Krell & Gomanda.
7) Parodius: The OMG power-down item.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Zweihander, you already mentioned my WTF moments.

R-Type Delta's final stage, that's really WTF.
And beeing announced as a Traiter at the end of Einhänder.

I also would like to include every Gradius final boss. It makes me WTF everytime I face him. I always think, this time they have a real boss. I thought that at least in Gradius V they got rid of that stupid tradition. But found out I was wrong. "Maybe if I one credit to that point I'll get the real boss"?

But no, there just isn't any boss... :(

ooooh, that thing... sorry, didn't know what you meant at first. ^^; yeah, that was a pretty pathetic final boss. ~_~

'nother WTF moment: Space Shot -- at some point in the game, there's a cinema of the other two characters finding male pr0n of glasses-dude(?) on his own computer. i was still in disbelief of what i just saw for the next 5 mins or so, then shuddered with acceptance.

Thunder Force V: how insanely Darius-like the game was, save for the multiple weapon types. but damn, the first boss is a bird, 2nd one's a praying mantis... 0_o

well, the 1-1 boss was a giant butterfly... you may be onto something there. XD

-Finding out the REAL final boss of DoDonPachi is immune to bombs and is also invincible for the same duration you are on a respawn.

-Getting the "Just a couple more shots!" bit from the announcer in DDP Daioujou, using a laser bomb, and having it HEAL the boss because you're playing on Death Label Mode.

-Some of the character artwork for Daioujou's kinda creepy too. I mean, you've got Shotia clinging to a fighter she's hooked up to, with blood coming out of the cockpit. And the wallpaper/bg of Exy with her head detached? Also creepy.

-The engrish of Blazing Star. Just when you think it can't get worse, it somehow does. From simple phrases like GET IT MORE to SOMEONE WAKES THE NOISE UP and then...The ending. Oh god...THE ENDING.

-Seeing your Hit count skyrocket in DOJ when you use a Hyper. Since 500 hits was an accomplishment in DDP for some people (like me, I've yet to do it) seeing people rack up hits in the 1000s was nothing short of crazy.

-Seeing the Lock On Laser in Raiden II for the first time. You can't tell me that didn't wow you all the first time...I was all like 'What in the...This thing is INSANE! IT'S AWESOME! IT'S SCREWED UP BEYOND BELIEF BUT IT'S SO DAMN FUN MWAHAHAHA!' ...Well, mentally. I was rather silent with awe and shock.
