Panzer Dragoon Zwei - WTF is this supposed to be?

Post by louisg »

I've been playing PDZ again and it's been bugging me that the second half of st4 doesn't make any sense. Seriously, what is this supposed to be around 1:50?

Am I in a cave, a cathedral, an elevator, or what? What are those things coming down from the ceiling? Shattered glass falling really really slowly? Stalactites?

Mid 90s 3d.. man.

I came here to say the game is great. It's been a few years since I've last played it. You reminded me to listen to the final boss theme again!

You're in a cavern.

They really need to remake this game. It was sweet.

Yeah, it was a darn shame PDZwei didn't get a PS2 SegaAges2500 release.

I'm surprised to see that Panzer Dragoon Orta gets very little attention and its dirt cheap on Ebay too.

What a shame because the game is really awesome.

I'd love to play Orta, but there's a crash bug in the emulation for running the PAL version on an Xbox 360 that makes it impossible to get past the third stage. AFAIK, this has never been patched.

Yeah, a Panzer Dragoon trilogy (containing the first three) would be awesome. Sega releases tons of compilations, but rarely touches or acknowledges Panzer Dragoon.

Afaik also the us version crashes after stage 3.
Those who have a jp XBox 360 are the lucky ones here :) It's the only original XBox game I ever play on my 360.

And yes, a remake of Zwei would be to cool!

And then a remake of Saga and then a successor to Orta and then Panzer Dragoon Saga 2.... 8)

Man that sucks but old Xbox systems are dirt cheap now. There are tons of great Xbox games left to consider purchasing an older system.

I'm all for a re-make of the first three games. Even though I own all of them I'd still pick them up just because the series is soo fantastic.

Hmm does Panzer Dragoon Orta work flawlessly on a NA 360 (no weird emulation glitches, extra framedrops,or jitter or anything), or if I want to play it should I buy an original XBox?

Yes, it received correct BC for North America. At least, I never heard of any issues.

Also on topic, you're not in just some cavern, it's a series of halls and tunnels of ruins from the Ancients, nothing specific as a cathedral as I recall. This is what I remember reading after Lundi escapes from Golia in Ep3.

Oh I know what most of the level is, and it looks like what it's supposed to be. It's just the last half of the level which gives me a big WTF!

It's a good one.. be sure to turn on full instruments in options- there's a lock-on-based scoring system, but you'd never know it from the default setup.

There's some polygon-tearing issues with the stage 7 boss that obscure parts of the screen. I had to die and upon continuing it's fine, but obviously it would be an issue for score attack.

Sometimes some of the fog/cloud effects also look a bit weird to me, but I haven't played it on an original Xbox so I don't know for sure.

I just got the first game.. it's pretty good! I think it might even be better than Zwei in terms of pacing and clarity. For example, they make it clearer that you can't steer the dragon unless you face forwards. I also like that you can change the view.

I'm trying to decide if I should pick up the Saturn version of the original, or just play the one included with Orta. I plan to pick up Orta for my original Xbox either way, though.

From what I could remember the xbox version was improved graphicly but not by much though. I say if you already have Orta don't bother with the original.

There's also an improved version of the original in the Sega Ages 2500 series for PS2.

Yeah, that looks really good! I've got a couple of the Sega Ages PS2 releases, but my PS2 isn't modded yet. I'm always wondering whether I should sell 'em and rebuy the originals on Saturn, or whether I should take the plunge and just modify my PS2 (or get a jp one). The later Ages discs really are excellent, from what I've seen (got Deka and GF2).

Does PS2 Dragoon seem like a real PS2 game with lots of good detail and care, or is it a cheesy make-over (ala OutRun or Space Harrier)?

No, it's one of the good remakes in the Sega Ages series. I think they were cheesy up to Vol.14 (Alien Syndrome) but most later ones are high quality.

I'm up to st5 in the first game, and I think it's exceptional. It seems like it's a lot tighter than Zwei as far as level design and pacing go. I do miss the berzerk powerup and the branching levels though.. if only it had everything! :)

Just to add to this thread (and speaking of Saturn chase-view shmups): I got Sky Target and it's really a terrible port.. what a missed opportunity seeing as the arcade game was pretty good

.. back to PD1 =)

Well, I LOVE the game, but I certainly wouldn't buy an Xbox for it. It runs well on the 360. The cinemas have stuttering issues sometimes though. And once in a while there are some graphical foul-ups. But it runs smoothly most of the time. It's a GREAT game. Best of the series.

I bought the J one for my J360, and it's difficulty is different. Normal is a lot easier, and the bosses don't take 20 years to kill. I prefer it over the U.S. version for this.

Don't expect a Deka quality remake. The dragon looks really good, but the backgrounds have just been straightened up a bit. The framerate is still the same, so it's not as nice as it could be. It looks a hell of a lot better than the Saturn version(it's on there too), but it's not up to Deka or GF2 standards. And let's not forget Nights, which is probably the best looking remake of the SA.
