Outzone 1cc without the 'Super Ball' weapon?

Post by Crayfish »

Does anyone know if this has ever been done?
I really love Outzone, but playing and watching replays of that game is really spoiled for me by that neutron yoyo of death superweapon. The game remains incredibly tough, but that weapon seriously reduces what would have been a much more interesting experience, its basicaly like having an 360degree AOE smartbomb continualy going off, killing everything in its radius, including enemies behind walls. The homing weapon in Thunderforce 4 has a similar effect, with its ability to shoot through walls.
So I was just wondering, are there any 1cc replays of Outzone where the superball isn't used (including the other board 'sets')? I would especialy love to see someone attempt to use the Super Burner weapon instead..

When I 1cc Outzone I found the Super Ball and the Super Burner to be shitty weapons (I avoid them at all cost).

I can understand that opinion on the Super Burner, which is a pure close range power weapon, but the Super Ball shitty?! In every replay I've seen, its used almost exclusively.

Eight-way cannon is a lot more useful than the superball (plus a lot more powerful). You don't need the super ball for a 1cc.

I made it to the fifth loop without ever using the super ball.

It's worth mentioning there are some drastic difficulty changes among the Outzone sets, which might be why some people have different experiences.

I found there are ways to deal with enemies behind walls, like the guys that come out of elevators around the second-third (can't remember precisely) stage.

On that note, does anybody know a reliable way to figure out the revision of an OutZone PCB? Ought to take a look and see how the markings are.

How many revisions are there? All I know is the version most easily found for MAME has the BGMs all mixed up differently than my PCB (both of the ones I owned, even). Or it might just be my ancient version of MAME. I don't know much other than that since I hardly play MAME anymore.

Also, I'd be happy if I could get a 1cc at all on this game :p

Yes the Eight way connon is certainly more powerful. They should have fixed the fire rate when zig-zagging, it just chucks out an insane amount of firepower. I still dispute that the Super Ball sucks tho. Its still the most usefull weapon.

Yes set 1 is susposed to be the toughest one, and seems to be considered the 'true' version for doing 1cc's. There is some discussion of this here:

Oh no! So I have a wimpy version of the game (and still cannot beat it?)

Guess I will need to flash my EPROMs with set A.

Im sure the game remains incredibly hard. All those fiddly platform sections are a nightmare. I wouldn't call any Toaplan revision 'wimpy' especialy Outzone.. ;)
