Name these shmup ladies

Post by 8 1/2 »

You've likely seen this piece of Joker Jun's artwork around. I've ran across it about five times in the last few weeks and I keep trying to figure out who everyone is. I added the numbers to make it easier to pinpoint specific people. Have at it.

Hmm....I guess I need to play more Cave games. Here's the ones I reckanize:

2 - the boss's spirit guardian from Guwange?
3 - Alice clone from Esprade I think
4 - Nail from Progear
6 - Irori from Esprade
8 - Chain from Progear

That's all I got. #9 looks really familiar though.

Hmmm.... pic looks familiar. :)
I knew the ones that Dewclaw mentioned, and that was it. Actually, I think 9 is Kosame from Guwange... w/ longer hair.

Hmmm... some of these are really difficult to pinpoint.
  1. dunno, a Guwange NPC maybe?
  2. final boss' guardian spirit // Guwange
  3. Alice clone // Esprade
  4. Nail // Progear no Arashi
  5. dunno
  6. Irori Mimasaka // Esprade
  7. dunno, looks like a Guwange NPC from the way she's dressed
  8. Chain // Progear no Arashi
  9. Kosame // Guwange
  10. Beltiana // Batsugun
  11. Rivet // Progear no Arashi
  12. Alteeno // Batsugun
  13. dunno

Well I'll be damned. The hair and the outfit do match, although the lack of crinkles in the group pic throws you off the trail. And if it is Lady Garra, the smiling is kinda creepy ;)

I want to know who #5 is... you'd think he'd put one of the more recognizable characters front and center.

I was thinking Leinyan from DOJ, but the clothes don't match. Seriously, if it didn't say "SHOOTING," in the background I'd think that most were just original characters.

It's probably easier if you use this picture. I think number 5 could be Yomogi Inaba.

Nice. Thanks Sparky. Uh... I still don't know most of them. I have a lot of Cave shmupping to catch up on. I have yet to really play Guwange and I'm still waiting to get Progear.

Well, #13 does have gray hair in the color pic that Sparky posted.

The colors help, but everyone is overly pinkified so it won't all be perfect matches.

I don't think anybody there is from Dai Ou Jou. It's a Happy New Year's 2002 greeting. That means it was drawn sometime in 2001. DOJ came out in 2002, and there's a good chance the characters either weren't designed yet, not known to the public, or at the very least not recognizable that they'd be included in this group shot.

EDIT:

Is this number 5? The problem is she has the same style of collar as Light Rain.

That's an ad for his manga series Otogi Matsuri. Although a lot of the characters in it look like his shmup characters, I don't think any of them are actually the same. (I've mean meaning to read the manga, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.) Also... I'm not sure when the manga started. If this is a 2001 card, odds are good that it wasn't around yet.

Not all of them are from shmups though...? Because if you go by the hair and the facial features, that's no. 5 right there.

Hmm, maybe, but I looked at all the covers and they all looked like they were ESP Ra De characters.

They should all be from shmups, it does say "Shooting" on the image. Not only the hair and face, her shirt has the same weird red ropey things.

I think she's from ESP Ra De. I'm not well-versed enough in the game though. Stab in the dark: Original Alice? The clones had to come from somewhere, but Number 5 doesn't look much like Alice Clones.

I think Sparky's right. But who the fuck is Yomogi Inaba. I Googled her, came right back to where I got my last image:

http://www5.airnet.ne.jp/jokerjun/otogi.htm

Anyone want to translate the info on her at the middle of the page. And it looks like the manga does feature characters from ESP Ra De, like Yasuke and Irori.

Didn't want to just add more to my last post, so here's a double post.

This site (http://www5.airnet.ne.jp/jokerjun/otogi.htm) seems to contain information on two manga series, one in the ESP Ra De world, one in the Guwange world. But amongst the Guwange images is this:

http://www5.airnet.ne.jp/jokerjun/otogi/satoru.jpg

It's Satoru, one of the villains from ESP Ra De. Seems like the manga put the two games into one universe with some crossover between the two. Groovy.

I've only seen Inaba in the Otogi Matsuri manga and not in any game so far. The manga doesn't take all his characters from shooters but Yuusuke, Irori, and a few bosses from ESP and Guwange appear. I'm barely on the second volume and haven't read to much into it but he does reference some of his previous works.

Undamned had some of those and I got to see them in Arizona last year. Amazing stuff. I intend to track them down sometime soon.

Are you going to look for the manga? If you live in California there are Book Offs and Kinokuniyas that might have them. I know Kinokuniya has them new for about $10. Book Off gets them a little more randomly and are used and cost less then from Kinokuniya though.
