Can't say I'm a fan, but if there would be more of these games, and I would actually own them, surely I would not hesitate to play!

Grew up on the SNES, with Final Fight, TMNT4 and Super Double Dragon. And that is probably also the reason why these three are my all-time-favourite "scrolling fighters". These should be played with friends, but I guess you already know that.

I almost almost (almost almost being like 3 hits from victory) finished Super Double Dragon alone without losing one whole bar of life, but got killed by the last "indian" guy as we called him when we were little. Disgusting pig.

I loved this genre as a kid (TMNT and Final Fight were two of my favorite arcade games), but now I find them repetitive and bland. Maybe I'm missing something, but walking up to a guy, smashing the punch button six times to knock him down (or suplexing him, or jump kicking him, or hitting him with a blunt object), then repeating the process for his 1,200 clones doesn't excite me anymore.

Even so, drinking a few beers and playing Final Fight (using Haggar, of course) is the way to go after a shitty day at work. :) The Ridiculous Factor of that game is truly legendary.

River City Ransom! I think someone else mentioned it.

I got RCR EX for the GBA when it came out last summer. Awesome update (when Alex bought the Emo CD, it said: "Alex looked down at his shoes and cried.") Awesome stuff, but no 2-player mode? Bah..

I played a little Burning Fight for my Neo Geo AES today. The graphics are a little rough but having ememies scale in from the background always impressed me about the game.

Ah - that wasn't in the arcades - my list is purely arcade for the moment.

Speaking of RCR, how is the GBA version? I've never played the NES original, but I've heard lots of praise from its cult following. Is RCR EX worth my money?

What about Double Dragon Advance? Advanced Guardian Heroes?

RCR EX is great; wonderful introduction even if you haven't played the NES original. Check it out.

DDA is not only a great beat em up, but the new awesome cinemas and FBI agent enemies make this arcade port definitely worthy to own. Incredibly entertaining.

I wrote the first review of Advance Guardian Heroes at LameFaqs under the username BadLoneSage if you want to see all my thoughts on the game. Now I'm somewhat tempted to raise the score to an 8, but I still stand by my 7.5.

Sengoku 2 rocks, and I also like most Capcom beat-em-ups, especially Knights of the Round.

Holy shit. I always wondered what llabnip meant. I'm really slow when it comes to backwards screennames.

I have 1cced Cadillacs & Dinossaurs on an arcade.. (well.. actually 2 credits, as usually played it with a friend)

This game was HUGELY popular here in Brazil. I'd probably say it's the most popular arcade game EVER (Except maybe by. huh.. Pac-Man? :D)

EVERY Arcade has one machine of it, and you bet there's ALWAYS someone playing it. I dunno why, but Brazilians seem to LOVE this game.

You just HAD to be able to 1cc the game, so you would get respect. :D I have met lots of people who could do it with a hand tied in the back...

Erm... I dunno

Still today, most arcades I know has a Cadillac & Dinosaurs around, while it's hard to find a Street Fighter 2 cab.

We should make a research in arcades here and ask arcades owners what game make them more money. Yes, it would be between Street Figther 2 and Cadillacs & Dinosaurs. :D

I can't believe you are leaving out Dragon Ninja/Bad Dudes. Ninjas, Ninja girls, ninja dogs, and even ninja midgets! You had to be a bad enough dude in order to rescue president Ronnie. President Ronnie, for crying out loud. Have you seen a game with president Clinton as of late? Of course not!

dragonninja is not really a beat them up because you're only moving horizontally.
otherwise i recommend ninja baseball batman too, especially in 2P.
also try knuckle bash by toaplan, it's bad but the design is very good and funny.

Indeed, by his logic Ninja Warriors isn't a beat em up either.

yes, i don't consider vigilante or kung fu master to be beat them ups, just action games with short range attacks like trojan. do you consider a beat them up to be any action game where you fight bare handed most of the time?
to me you have to be able to move in 2 directions. dynasty warriors is a beat them up even though you fight with swords, and kung-fu master isn't even though you punch and kick.
i think it makes sense but if you don't agree that's fine, i'm not going to turn this into another semantics thread.

the Rushing Beat trilogy can't get enough love. Rival Turf was the first game we bought for our SNES because we loved Final Fight but wanted to play co op (which wasn't in the SNES version :( ). Someone recommended Rival Turf and we were hooked.

I didn't even know about Brawl Brothers until recently, but I strongly recommend checking that bad boy out before moving on to The Peace Keepers, which is the pinnacle of the series. The branching paths kick much ass, but the US localization is downright horrible. They changed all of the special attacks to lameify them, swapped out the character portraits, and the translation makes zero sense. It's not as bad as Shikigami no Shiro 2's translation, but it's pretty bad.

There's an english patch out for the Japanese SFC rom of it, which I strongly recommend checking out if you end up digging the game.

on a tangent, if you liked Die Hard Arcade, you may be interested in Minority Report. For reals. Game was done by Treyarch, who's mostly famous for doing the recent 3d Spiderman games, but they're also the force behind the pc cult classic Die By The Sword (another one to check out, though it's a bit more of a hack em up than a beat em up :)).

BTW, there's a code in Brawl Brothers that changes the game to the Japanese title screen. "View Japanese title screen:
Quickly press B, A, X, Y repeatedly at the Jaleco screen until the screen becomes scrambled. Press Start after a hearing a sword slash. Press Down(3), Start when the screen changes. Exit the options screen to view the title screen from the Japanese version of the game."-from Gamewinners. Does this code make the game more like the Japanese one?
