Upcoming Cave arcade title (Akai Katana)

Post by Macaw »

Didn't see a current thread for this so, yeah

http://cave-game.cocolog-nifty.com/blog ... -f2df.html

New horizontal game with a location test sometime this month. Dunno what to think as Cave definitely didn't rock the casbah last time. Will they ass out on jacked 3d or go back to 2d. Will there be more than 4 stages. Will I be able to jack off over predominant sexual content. Maybe the screen will no longer be constantly filled with enormous score text and I can actually convince myself again I was playing a shooting game.

Personally I hope there is a fishing mini game.

*Update*

Game is called Akai Katana (Red Katana)

It's taken so long I'm guessing 2D. But, who knows. Reality is something that escapes me from time to time. Not sure if I'll make the loke test.

I hope this one is something a bit more serious. I'm thinking along the lines of Ketsui or Progear. Ditch the 3D please- HD 2D is where it's at. DS II leaves me thinking some enemies could've looked better if prerendered into sprites of the same caliber as Cave's 360 ports. The Blazblue method (3D BGs and 2D sprites) would've been better.

Graphically, even Neo-Geo Pulstar & Blazing Star impress me more than DS II. Hmmm.... since Yumekobo isn't in business, I wouldn't mind Cave buying the rights to take a shot at Blazing Star II. Get Harumi Fujita on BGM detail if this happens.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

I think we may see more horizontal action from Cave in the future, largely because tate-able LCD cabinets seem to be a rarity.

God, I wish this was something like a Progear II or so. I know this isn't going to happen though... -_-

On the other hand, horizontal is always a plus for me.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Horizontal + fantasy theme + lolis = success

Vertical + manly vehicles + gay dudes (ketsui) = fail

Cave would be crazy putting out a vert again, not to speak a manly game...

I'm not at all opposed to 3D, especially if it's done like in Gradius V or Psyvariar 2; I consider them among the more graphically beautiful and well-designed shmups of the 2000s. DS II is indeed ugly, however.

Sound interesting. I hope it isn't full of lolis and 3d. It better be something manly.

I don't mind lolis and i wouldn't die if it's in 3D (preferring 2D, of course).
Looking forward for further info... it can't be bad.
This is fucking Cave we're talking about here.
Personally i'm not too happy about it being a hori, but then again
it's easier to sell ports of hori games later.

I like hori's... don't like shitty 3D, but I do like good 3D.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

A Blazing Star 2 sequel would rock. Yep, Harumi Fujita is one to get for that kind of detailed work. The background detail work shown in Blazing Star is jaw-dropping, especially the very detailed background scenery shown of the space station with lots of eye-candy to behold. I recall seeing the kick-ass MVS Blazing Star game at my local Modesto, CA based "Nickel Play" arcade hangout back in February of 1998 -- it was a brand new MVS conversion kit anyways that the arcade had just gotten in.

Makes me wonder if the staff at Cave have any high regards/appreciate both Pulstar & Blazing Star MVS games. So whom owns the current IP rights to the Yumekobo game catalog?

It's good to hear that Cave is gearing up to release another new arcade PCB up for a loke test/feedback from the general public. Am curious to see if it is a sequel or if it's an entirely new shmup title from the ground up.

The "no more lolis/anime girls" etc comments: Does it really matter what we pilot or what the game's theme is, as long as its fun? Cave is simply striking while the iron is hot on moe anime blobs. For the record I hope the game is about a Loverboy cover band comprised entirely of crossdressing shotas riding unicorns that've been doused in gasoline which ignite in fire when you get hit from the tentacled space monsters you're fighting against

I prefer horis to verts so I'm glad its another hori. Hopefully if its done in 3D it won't look as godawful as Deathsmiles IIX. I don't understand why that game didn't just use 3d Backgrounds and stick to 2D sprites, since they reused so many of the old character designs for enemies. It'd of been easier to copy/paste the old sprites and add in a new one here and there than redoing every single old enemy in 3D I'd imagine.

It's 99% likely that it'll have lolis (and maybe a few traps) and be in 3D. Get over it, people.

I think hi-res 2D (or even pre-rendered 3D) backgrounds combined with real-time 3D models would be the better option. If the backgrounds take up fewer resources, more can be reserved for the 3D models. Plus, they wouldn't have to spend time converting all of the 3D models into pre-rendered sprites. Not much goes on in the backgrounds, so not having them in 3D wouldn't be a big loss. Or maybe if Cave decides to put a dedicated video card in their PC hardware this time, there won't be a need for these compromises.

If you mean dedicated as in a separate chip, Cave has definitely used one for their DS II board. Running 3D on a CPU is just economically ineffective since GPUs at those clock speeds are not only almost an order of magnitude more powerful, but also dirt cheap. Now, for instance, iPhone's processor has about 4x the performance of the one in the Dreamcast — that's more than enough to power a Cave hori, even if it's running at native widescreen 848x480.
