How bad are you at Radiant Silvergun?

Post by evil_ash_xero »

Since I finally have my Saturn properly hooked up again, i've been playing RS. I have had this game since it came out, but I still haven't improved on this game at ALL. I'm terrible. Like, insanely bad. I can't clear stage 1!

It just plays odd. Everything is coming at me slowly, with bullets coming at angles and in other weird directions. It's almost as if it doesn't play like a shmup at all, and more like some other Treasure game(but just really hard).

I love the game, but i'm ashamed at how bad I am at it. I'm not THAT bad.

Anyone else here just terrible at this game?

I suck at RSG too.

I can't beat stage 1... er stage 4 [because of the boss after Gallop, and he's the only problem I have, if I continue past him, I can clear the rest of the level, or almost clear it], no matter how much I try. And then, on a lot of runs, I make terribly stupid mistakes and kill myself well before Gallop.

And yes, everything is really slow moving, but it still manages to surprise and kill you. And then I try to chain [credit fed through the game, it's theoretically beatable without chaining until you get to the game's stage 5, and then the bosses don't get damaged enough from your shots to be killed before self destruct, in which you have to pray and dodge till then [and I sure as hell can't do either, especially because I at least see myself able to eventually be able to dodge the stuff thrown at me before then, but stages 5 and 1 [Xiga] make me want to cry because I will never, ever, ever beat them properly.]]

Although, I am pretty bad at most shmups, but still. RSG is a level in depression for me.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

I want to like this game so much, but it's a cheek-gnashingly frustrating prospect for me. Same with Ikaruga. All this 3d shit floating towards you in a half arsed manner, you blow up, arg arg. They're really not like other shoot-em-ups at all. I really dislike the prospect of playing a game counter-intuitively for score. But then, it's really not my bag full stop.

It's a shame cus they look and sound awesome. I'd love to play a game with RS's pomp and grandeur, but with Cave's razor sharp mechanics.

The super slow pacing, seriously odd enemy placement, weird boss patterns, and too many weapons at once.
The overall presentation is unbelievable. The voice over in the 1st lvl is a personal favorite.

I can perfect all 5 phases of the the 1st stage. However, as that chase for the 1st boss of the 2nd stage starts it all goes downhill. I know I should get back and memorize the popcorn enemies between the walls to maximize my chain, but not now.

Great topic, haha! I also love RSG but suck terribly at it. One of the hardest games I've ever played.

A typical credit seems to get me to Gallop... (playing for chains but not weapon bonuses)

Radiant Silvergun is one of only a handful of shooters I've ever one credited, on Arcade mode, anyway. To have a real shot at it, you've got to really know how to chain the first two levels, level 3 and either 2 or 4. Level 2 is the easier path, IMO, but yields fewer points. If you can score well enough you should be able to scrape by to the end, though you can essentially double your score (and hence your weapon levels) in stage 5 if you know what you're doing.

true; Stage 4 and 5 are score streaks if played properly

then again, i die unexpected times, but practicing by credit-feeding hepled A LOT
i have memorized all the patterns and the correct weapon usage for chains and bosses; if you know the game, Xiga is by far the easiest boss of all
i should keep practicing, and if i avoid stupid deaths, 1CC will occour with at least 20m or more

Yeah pretty bad...

It IS different.

It's one of those amazing things about rs and ikaruga, and a feel that convinced me early on that ikaruga was indeed a suitable spiritual successor.

Unfortunately, this can make these games somewhat inaccessible - especially if you play more than one game at once... It really can become something of a frustration, and something like a religious experience...

Back when a LOT of bands were still good.

Anyways, i'm better at Ikaruga, just so ya know. I can make it to stage 4 on Normal, although I need to practice much much more if I am going to be able to get through the spinning satellite of death, in one piece.

RSG just...gah...i'll sit down and really focus...die....think about what I did wrong, play again....die...over and over...it's like nothing is working for me. It's so sad.

I need to learn the chains of the last few levels if I'm ever going to beat the game. Sadly my copy is quite damaged and Arcade mode doesn't load, at least I have Saturn mode though.

Epic game, will always be in my top 5.

I'm so bad, I just have a CD-R.

.............OK, I had a legit copy for a time and sold it during a mass collection purge. Maybe one day in the future I'll have a copy again.

I never got any good at the game, and it just seems like such a daunting task to dedicate weeks/months/years to get good at it, so I got discouraged and just played some other games for fun instead.

Back in the day when I had the Saturn version, I didn't realize that it was saving my weapon level-up, so I thought I was ok at the game. Then I got the arcade version, and realized that you needed to chain to get that powerful weapon level, and that I suck at chaining, and that I suck at the game.

I could get through the first stage within the first few hours of playtime, but starting with stage 2 it goes downhill instantly. The chase is murdering me.

Dunno why, but I still like this game. It doesn't fuck around.

I much prefer the chaining in RS to that in Ikaruga. it feels less prescribed, like you've got far more freedom to decide what to chain and where, and I guess that's largely down to the fact that you've got the three colours to choose from, rather than just the two. That's probably a large part of the reason why it's more difficult than Ikaruga, too.

In fact, RS is just about the only chain-based shmup I've played that doesn't send me into a blind rage or turn me off immediately.

It's also worth pointing out that in RSG/Ikaruga chaining is sequence-based, rather than timing-based like in DonPachi series, which makes the former less punishing as a whole (you can skip a few enemies if you can't keep up, or a section altogether if you can't chain it well, and it won't put a huge dent into your final score unlike breaking a chain 2/3 into a stage in DOJ). On the other hand, RSG requires chaining for survival, which basically means "go pro or don't play this game at all". It's very hard to beat Ikaruga without the extra extends, either, even if it's not as pronouced there. Hell, I can't even beat stage 3 yet. :o

If you don't like chaining, there's always Saturn mode. After several attempts your weapons will be strong enough that you can just focus on survival.

Arcade mode is on the disc also, ya know. That's the one I tend to play. Saturn version is a bit long winded.

The RSG superplay on super-play.co.uk is amazing, but it also shows that I'd never actually want to get good at the game. All that boss milking, augh

You can do away with boss milking and still have a decent score, but it will require more precise chaining and more aggressive play in general.
