One thing to keep in mind, you can only select resolutions that your PS2 bios supports, so if you have a model that say, doesn't support 576p, your PS2 will cut off (like mine does). I've had almost no luck getting GSM to boot original games, but backups with FreeMcBoot / UELF launcher are no problem, just make sure your configuration is set to boot into UELF instead of ESR.

You don't need to burn it. You don't need to use a hard disk either. It does work from a disc however, or a memory card, or a USB stick, or even a hard disk if you place it there. It will likewise work with games loaded from HD Loader if you happen to use that. Depending on how much control you have over the screen layout with your particular monitor, it is probably less useful for 4.3 screens than it is for 16.9 ones as it is difficult to get settings just right to eliminate borders completely, while stretching and/or zooming with a 16.9 screen will give you a proper ratio for 4.3 in most instances. It does the same thing Blaze, the later XPloder, and Asmodean's patcher do, code was even shared from the patcher for this.
Everything you need to use it is in the thread already linked here.

Normally, I use a HD Loader disc to navigate the games on my HDD (I got a fat PS2). Care to explain what steps I need to take in order to launch this video mode switcher before a game? I'd really like to minimize the hassle of using discs at all should my PS2's laser quit on me. My PS2 unfortunately has a cheap mod chip that doesn't play nicely with Memory Card Exploits. I try and I try to understand what all those "hacker" guys in the "PS2 scene" talk about, but they just assume everybody's has had a PS2 from release day or something.
What mod chip do you have that prevents softmodding? If that's causing issues with softmods then it could as easily cause issues with other homebrew software, you are better off without it. If you lack the skill to remove the chip then just pick up another PS2, surely you can find one cheaply. Google for "freemc boot" or "freemcboot," and "noobie package." All this requires is an Action Replay and a USB memory stick, and a normal PS2 memory card; you copy the FreeMC Boot installer (in the form of the noobie package) to your USB stick, put it in your PS2 and run Action Replay. This will allow you to run the installer. Then boom, you are done, any time you have the memory card plugged in at boot time you will boot to a PS2 BIOS menu. From there everything is possible. Run ULE and you can boot GSM, configure GSM and you can boot HD Loader in 480p (or whatever).
Avoid retail HD Loader, it does not have all the fixes that have come in freely from the community over the years.

I don't know what type of chip it is, it was installed when I got the PS2 in a trade. I don't use my PS2 very much, but getting games running in 480p would change that.
I've got some testing done tonight, but only on my Plasma set so far. At least I got everything working, storing the GSM elf file along with HDLoader .elf files on my memory card and navigating to them using a bootable CD with an .elf loader.
