There's a scene in School Rumble that references Darius. I don't remember the episode, tho.
Lucky Star's character Kagami plays shmups and there's even a Gradius reference.
Salamander anime, of course.
Ummmm anything with fighting spacecraft.

Shmups rich in missiles and condensation trails remind me of all this Itano circus in Eureka Seven. Steampunk-themed shmups remind me of Last Exile, which reminds me of Star Wars.

Over-the-top space battle anime are more fun if you call out the moves as they happen.
"He just pressed the bomb button" or "Nice last second activation of the reflect barrior" or "He just activated hyper mode" or any number of boss-warning klaxons whenever a small fighter takes on a battleship. And of course, "FEEEEEEEVER!" when everything gets destroyed.

Anything with missile barrages is a hint to good ol' Macross.
Also, an old 80's series called Mighty Orbots was a gigantic Gradius tribute (Umbra, the crazy computer, if that's not a shooter boss I don't know what it is!) and had quite a lot of shmup feelings. Heck, a lot of '80s stuff was like that. Wings of Honnemaiase (sp? That movie from Gainax, the most expensive at its time) seemed to have inspired the Panzer Dragoon series (ship designs of the "enemies", the fictional language and such).

Ring Raiders: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1YsLt8XGQE
Battle Garegga right there.
There is also that Saturn game that also has an anime, Quo Vadis 2. On youtube you can see several scenes and it's pretty much freaking Macross on your face. Incredibly awesome with the cool type of mechs shooting missiles and shit:

It's things like these what make me sad and keep me wondering WTF happened to anime and Japan in general. This level of kickass, Mucho Macho Mecha (MMM!) and pew pew is more and more scarce as time goes by. American cartoons used to be so damn kickass too...

Ah yes, The Might Orbots was shown on NBC back in 1985 for just one season only. It was released on VHS tape format but still hasn't been released on the better all-digital DVD nor Blu-Ray formats since then. The funny thing was that no Might Orbots toys or even any related Orbots merchandise was carried in the American retail stores nor speciality toy stores (despite the fact that it was an new all anime series created, especially for the American Saturday morning syndicated cartoon market). It must have been quite expensive to produce it from the ground up and to air for only just one season never to be repeated ever again.Observer wrote:Anything with missile barrages is a hint to good ol' Macross.
