I had someone offer me a Red Hawk / Stagger 1 PCB as a partial trade towards some Neo Geo stuff I'm offloading... never really heard of the game or the company that makes it before, and dont' know anything about it.
Is the game any good, worth playing a couple times, or complete crap? Anything that it can easily be compared to? In searching, I saw one person on here years ago had compared it to early Psikyo, but said it was lesser quality.
Finally, if I do end up taking it as a partial trade, any thoughts on the value of this board?
Thanks

Re: Red Hawk / Stagger 1
I remember playing that one for a while not too long ago in mame. Feels a bit like a bastardized early psykio on easy difficulty setting but with faster bullets. 4 different pilots/crafts to choose from, 2 or 3 different option-powerups to pick up. Player's shot power can be upgraded quite a bit and there's also a different charge-shot for each character. Game's boring and easy except some thight spots with ultra fast bullets on later stages. It's playable but nothing to write home about. I guess it depends on what for neogeo stuff he wants for it, the game's not worth much, really. Personally, I'd rather give 25 bucks for that PCB than trade games for it that will possibly let you regret the trade later. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Red Hawk / Stagger 1
Eh... the stuff I'm letting go of is all duplicates or games I'm tired of, and an extra motherboard and a JAMMA adaptor I don't need.... so no chance of regret, just a question of whether I want this PCB in place of some undetermined amount of cash for my stuff.ZOM wrote:I remember playing that one for a while not too long ago in mame. Thanks for the run-down, very helpful. So are you thinking it's worth about $25, or was that just an abstract number thrown out?

Re: Red Hawk / Stagger 1
Just some number I've thrown.
Actually, I've seen the HK version of RedHawk ranging from $50 all the way up to $80, but I seriously wouldn't pay that price-tag for that particular game.
EDIT: Just googled for it and coinopexpress has an HK version in stock for $110 lol

Gotcha, thanks for the info! Yeah, I just got a vert cab set up (finally) and wanted to have a couple different games to play on it, but I don't think that game would beZOM wrote:Just some number I've thrown.

worth any $80 to me.

Re: Red Hawk / Stagger 1
I really recommend setting up mame for such cases, it's very convenient for little "sneak-peeks" before jumping on a PCB. You won't even need a powerful machine for that purpose.

Re: Red Hawk / Stagger 1
Yeah, the subject of MAME came up in another thread that I'd started - back when I was just into Neo Geo and CPS2 stuff, they were all games that I had another emulator for and/or was familiar with... now, not so much. I may have to go the MAME route to try stuff, in fact, I just wouldn't want to let it ruin a game for me...

Re: Red Hawk / Stagger 1
what do you mean, 'ruin it for you'? you can play a game before you fork out cash to buy it....if it sucks in mame, its gonna suck with the PCB....MmSadda wrote:Yeah, the subject of MAME came up in another thread that I'd started - back when I was just into Neo Geo and CPS2 stuff, they were all games that I had another emulator for and/or was familiar with... now, not so much. and even if its a matter of the emulation not being accurate and not a perfect representation of the game running on actual hardware, these instances are few and far between, and at least it gives an idea of what the game is like....most stuff runs pretty much spot on
i find it very odd to ask others about games before you buy them when its super easy to just try it yourself....i can understand why, but not you apparent unwillingness to actually try them yourself in mame...i would much rather buy a game based on what i like and not on the opinions of others who may have different tastes
i dunno why you seem to think mame is so complicated? if you can use neorage or winkawaks you can use mame....
Re: Red Hawk / Stagger 1
I don't think it's horribly complicated, but most of my posts are made at work, where I can't very well download MAME, hence the discussion, instead of me just going ahead and doing it.jonny5 wrote:what do you mean, 'ruin it for you'? you can play a game before you fork out cash to buy it....if it sucks in mame, its gonna suck with the PCB....MmSadda wrote:Yeah, the subject of MAME came up in another thread that I'd started - back when I was just into Neo Geo and CPS2 stuff, they were all games that I had another emulator for and/or was familiar with... now, not so much. As for "ruining" a game with MAME, I was referring to playing a game on MAME until getting burned out on it, thus negating any desire to play the PCB. Maybe that's a silly idea to you, but I could see myself playing a game in MAME until I'm sick of it, that I would've otherwise wanted to own. I could also see myself trying a game, disliking it after a few credits in MAME, and giving up on it - In fact, a lot of the games I most enjoy are ones that I had mixed feelings about at first, until I realized "well, I own this, I may as well play a bit more before just selling it off." Maybe I'm just crazy, though.

Re: Red Hawk / Stagger 1
dont play it enough to get burnt out on it then...play it just long enough to know if you like it enough to buy it.....if the 5-10 mins of test play in mame is enough to burn you out, its a shit game anyways....MmSadda wrote:I don't think it's horribly complicated, but most of my posts are made at work, where I can't very well download MAME, hence the discussion, instead of me just going ahead and doing it.jonny5 wrote:what do you mean, 'ruin it for you'? you can play a game before you fork out cash to buy it....if it sucks in mame, its gonna suck with the PCB....MmSadda wrote:Yeah, the subject of MAME came up in another thread that I'd started - back when I was just into Neo Geo and CPS2 stuff, they were all games that I had another emulator for and/or was familiar with... now, not so much. Re: Red Hawk / Stagger 1
Man, Galuda's not here yet. Granted, the guy shipped it as fast as he said he would, and he used a quick method, but I swear not having Galuda is makin me antsy....jonny5 wrote: dont play it enough to get burnt out on it then...play it just long enough to know if you like it enough to buy it.....if the 5-10 mins of test play in mame is enough to burn you out, its a shit game anyways....

The thing is, if I like a game in MAME enough to buy it, I'm gonna keep playing it 'til I get a PCB - I did that with some Neo stuff and got burned out. Lack of self-control is a bitch.
