What's the background story on the Wii shmup called Saint?

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

I was browsing at my local Target store one day in the bargin video game aisle and saw this cheap Wii game title called "Saint" for $14.99 USD. Upon reading the back cover, it seemed vaguely like a yoko-based shmup title (akin to Psikyo's Sol Divide shmup). Decided to buy it on a whim and take a chance on it. Turns out that it is indeed a yoko shmup title but with some interesting Korean manga artwork for the cutscenes shown between stages. Was this Wii Saint shmup game released in Japan as well? There is a screenshot in reference to Japanese game developer Starfish-SD (same famed dev whom did the stellar GBA shmup port of Steel Empire which, sadly, did not get a USA GBA release -- only for Japan & Europe GBA markets).

I noticed that the U.S. based game publisher, UFO, was responsible for distributing this Wii Saint game stateside.

Looking at this video, it reminds me of the other UFO published shooter The Monkey King which is not a good thing...

It basically is a sequel to the Monkey King game on Wii. Both of these games are quite awful, but surprisingly, Monkey King is actually better than Saint somehow. Avoid this game at all costs unless you're not actually paying for it, like me.

Both are just based on the popular Chinese/Japanese story of "Saiyuki" or "Journey to the West" or god knows how many other names its been called. There's not much story besides some really badly made cutscenes and the characters being ripped from the pages of the story, but please avoid paying for these as much as possible. I found Monkey King for $1.99 so I decided to get it, but I downloaded Saint and it is just plain awful.

Both of these games are based off of an older Taito game called Cloud Master (Chuuka Taisen).

I have reason to believe that Starfish is made of Hot-B staff, mostly because of Steel Empire.
