For the record, I ain't shitting on anime or people who enjoy it -- I myself have a debilitating crush on Misato from Evangelion and pile of girly CLAMP manga stacked on a bookshelf in my room. I just find people who take this rather inane issue of taste as a personal attack rather amusing. I have been friends with a lot of easily-offended anime fans in the physical world, including a guy who was married to a visual novel character and had two hugpillows with loli pillowcases. So I'm still in Japan for the next week, and I've been doing some thinking about this loli thing and I've come to a realization. Japan certainly has depictions of loli stuff, mainly in manga and such. Essentially they are sexualizing young girls, at least indirectly for the most part. I can't speak on behalf of everyone, but at least for America, American society is guilty of encouraging young girls to sexualize themselves. More and more I see girls wearing clothing I never saw them wear when I was their age, and I see them wear stuff like titty tank tops that I'd never want my own daughter to wear. There's the whole Barbie dolls and Bratz dolls thing, and so many other facets of our culture that indoctrinates them from a very young age to become little lolis. The age that the summer comes when a girl suddenly becomes self-conscious while wearing a bathing suit is becoming younger and younger. I've talked with moms who have heard six year old girls saying how fat they are and how they need to go on a diet. Plus, I don't hear about high school girls in Japan begging their moms for body piercings and tattoos. Heck, even the slutty-type adult women in Japan who prance around in high heel boots with their typical Japanese bow-leggedness and mini skirts still seem to wear more clothing than many American teenage girls. Or pre-teen girls, for that matter. I've read articles about moms taking their pre-teen daughters to get a bikini waxing and such. America is getting pretty sick with their attitudes toward young girls, so it's really hard for me to judge what goes on here in Japan. Japanese girls, for the most part, are girls and behave as such. My wife told me yesterday that when she sees American high school girls, they look like they're in their 20's by comparison to Japanese high school girls.
