I am starting to seriously play this CAVE gem on the PS2.
I watched the included "Super Replay" (SR) of a skilled player. What I'm trying to do atm is to chain all the way through stage 1-1. Look at this video (only 42secs). Two things:
In the SR, after the guy collected the 2nd Bee he immediately received a Hyper Item. When I collect the 2nd Bee, my Hyper Bar isn't full enough to receive the Hyper Item at this point.
Also, my Combo is lower than his. At the point where the video stops I have a hit-count of 208 whereas he has 214 at the same location. I killed all the enemies. What am I missing here?
I think, if I got the higher Combo and timed my Bee-Collecting a bit better, I could manage to get the Hyper Item when he does.
Also:
-How does the PS2 version differ from the original arcade game? anything major? I never played the arcade game.
-The hi-score DOJ thread: Did you guys all play the arcade version? do you accept PS2 hi-scores?
DoDonPachi DOJ (PS2) some questions
Re: DoDonPachi DOJ (PS2) some questions
Lasering large enemies gives you hyper meter. Point blanking does double damage, thus double hyper meter and double the chain increase. Hitting multiple enemies multiplies it. You didn't point-blank the tower while it was invincible, which gives you bonus chain and hyper bar.
ANOTHER MYSTERY SOLVED.

the majority of the scores are the ps2 version, there are no major differences

shhhweeet. Thanks for the input. Do we have a strategy guide here of DOJ or a thread that explains all the game mechanics? Searched through the strategy section but haven't found anything satisfactory.

I thought this one was pretty good, are you looking for anything that it's lacking?Hachi wrote:shhhweeet. Thanks for the input. Do we have a strategy guide here of DOJ or a thread that explains all the game mechanics? Searched through the strategy section but haven't found anything satisfactory.

a couple of notes though:
OP is wrong about rank, there are two different ranks: survival rank and hyper rank. Survival rank increases constantly while hyper rank goes up for each hyper you use. One of them increases bullet speed and the other increases bullet density. I can't remember which is which, lol.
I think (definitely not sure about this, just a guess) that his scoring formula is wrong. I believe it works like in Donpachi where the value of the enemy is "added to the chain" and each time you kill an enemy you get as many points as your chain is "worth" (all of the enemies you've killed added up), while killing an enemy with hyper still gives you the chain's value, but adds more to the value per kill. I could be completely wrong about this, but this is how it works in DP, DDP, and DFK, so I think it would be odd if it didn't do this in DOJ.

I'm dumb. Thx you two, this should get me going. Haven't seen this one.
Thx ncp for your thoughts.
How do you guys make those guides? pure observation?

Missing 6 hits isn't a really big deal, unless you are aiming for the WR.
ncp is right, you need to point blank the midboss when he is invincible. If you 100% copied the SR strategy on stage 1, you will definitely get your first hyper item after you killed the midboss.

Re: DoDonPachi DOJ (PS2) some questions
yay, just reached 216 after the midboss (point-blanking).
One thing: I've read many times (here and also @ other places) that lasering enemies (not bosses) fills your hyper gauge better. that's wrong (as stated in the strat guide). in fact you get LESS than with normal shots. I've tested this just now with the first row of enemies in stage 1-1. normal shot > laser shot for the hyper gauge.

Re: DoDonPachi DOJ (PS2) some questions
The hyper gauge increases just from holding laser on an enemy, while with shot you have to be destroying enemies. Thus holding the laser on medium to large enemies as they come on screen, abusing their invincibility time, increases your hyper gauge faster, especially if you manage to hit them with aura as well.

This is a great example of the kind of immense skill and dedication I'll never have towards anything in life. Thomas Jefferson was a lying bastard, all men are not created equal.
