this looks pretty neat. I hate fps´s.
does it have some virtual on in there?
If somebody put a gun to my head and said: "play a fps", I would pick this one.

I've now just started to play Mad World, which is maybe one of the only games that I will play with that fucking wonky controller the Wii has. And it's pretty awesome.
Bayonetta was awesome.
I still haven't played that DS game.

High hopes for Vanquish.

Platinum are a pretty awesome company so far.

Release date is October 19, U.S..

Every game by Platinum for me has been both fantastic in some way, but ultimately something of a let down (still haven't played Infinite Space yet...) I'm really encouraged by the fact this game has been developed by Mikami, who's last title was God Hand. I've been hoping with each new Platinum game entry that it would manage whatever magic God Hand did for the PS2. Perhaps this is the one?

I really enjoyed Madworld and Bayonetta.... especially Bayonette. Very psked to see with what they can do in 3rd person with a gun.

The dashing makes it look fast, like a 3rd person shooter with a little of virtua on's speed thrown in.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

The missile barrage...

They already bought me with that, jeez. I mean, I am no fan of this kind of game but I see a score counter, combo stuff and such. Annoying Simon-says stuff and overuse of bullet time aside, looks quite solid!

I wonder if they really end up doing a PC release later on and people mod it to make all enemies shoot missiles in a massive Itano Circus, remove slowdown/bullet time and overload the screen in madness... Glorious. And a melted GPU.

FPS? You mean, like that Myst thing on a CD-ROM?
Something about that footage speaks "30 fps" to me (I'd like to be proven wrong about it). Artistically it most likely won't get improved to any meaningful extent. Say what you will, but I find Rakugaki Showtime or Virtual-On (that ultra-smooth Sega Ages 2500 release for the PS2) more pleasing for the eye.

IIRC, youtube videos cannot run at framerates higher than either 24 or 30 fps. Anyway, this game looks awesome. I love the scooting mechanic.

It seriously just looks like a combinatin of LP2 and Gears. The slow loading Youtube video and her voice didn't do the game coverage any favours.

I can only assume that the entire game is like this, start to finish.

Yes, but imagine LP2 & Gears re-imagined through the Bayonetta filter. I am not begging a comparison to Bayonetta, but rather this is clearly going to be about style, bullet-time, combos, etc. The notion you can shoot bullets out of the air implies something very different than LP2 & Gears. Of course, we just don't know until we play it.

Your second comment though does bother me. Everything we have seen is from this one arena, and the setting just doesn't inspire me.

Alright, it's time to honor the great tradition of shmups.system11.org, judging games before they're out. So here's my impression from gameplay videos:

There's literally nothing in this game that isn't ripped off from somewhere else. This is the ultimate victory of man over the bell curve, the materialization of the immaterial concept of "generic" and the averageness itself, the very essence of 7/10.

Of course that's the point of a preview video, I'm just saying that this one failed to do so, because it contains nothing interesting.

Maybe it's because I don't play many shooters, but where is that sweet looking rocket-scooting mechanic ripped off from? I'd really like to play the game that invented that :D

Rocket dashing mid-air and on ground isn't anything uncommon in mecha games. Virtual-On, Omega Boost and the likes. Zone of the Enders games are all about locking and dashing (the first one) and locking, dashing, then performing a grab-spin-throw sequence (Anubis). Shame about the latter's framerate.
Also, Tribes bloody Tribes.
linko9 wrote:IIRC, youtube videos cannot run at framerates higher than either 24 or 30 fps.
I don't expect a YouTube vid to run at 60 fps. It just looks like one of those artistically uninspiring "rock solid 30 fps" action games of today. Call it a hunch. After MadWorld turned out to be running at 30 fps at best (even less in the poor PAL conversion), all this coming from the former members of Studio Clover, I don't expect anything of the last gen Capcom quality from them. At this point of the gaming history if it turns out to have better framerate, that alone will make it an outstanding phenomenon.
As for the character and arena design, it's almost like someone told them to not go overboard in this department, whereas it's begging for a trippy visual galore.

Yeah, I think after God Hand and the disappointment of Bayonetta/Mad World, Mikami is trying to be the responsible adult and make something that will pay the rent. He's gone way too far in the other direction, though - Vanquish doesn't look inspiring at all from a visual perspective. The action looks a lot more frantic than any of the games people are bringing up, and I'm 100% sure it will play better than stuff like ZoE and Lost Planet 2.

ZOE2 is über-frantic once you get the hang of it, especially later on. The original edition sports wince-inducing framerate, though (havent played the Special Edition), which kinda mars the experience. I think it's about as close to the UT2004 and Tribes Vengeance intensity as you can get in 3D with a joypad. Or rather would be, if it wasn't for the framerate. Shinobi (PS2) and Blood Will Tell are about something slightly different (sacrificing the complexity of 3D environment for the sake of high kill rate and chaining), thus I'm not comparing them to this Vanquish thing.

Yeah, ZoE 2 special edition is pretty sweet with the score attack mission select mode and all that.. didn't know it also fixed framerate problems.

Also, Virtual On surely does get frantic when people are playing fast.. look at this or any other replay with good players playing aggressively.

Looking forward to vanquish for sure.

I've had a change of heart, I like this now.

Even if the entire game is going to consist of the same thing, and the occasional boss with QTEs.

I think it looks great. The whole time I played Gears of War 2 I was thinking how great it would be if they added some snap to the controls and made the game more arcade-like and this looks like it does just that. I wouldn't be too worried about the setting right now, pretty much everything they've shown has been from the same level, which is likely an early one. If a couple months from now they're still showing the spider boss and the same arena, then I'd be concerned.
Feedback will set you free.

I thought Bionic Commando because of the robot arm, but Bill Rizer, especially his portrayal in Neo Contra is a closer resemblance.

Although on the safe "white kids play as white people" side, the character design is actually rather good (i.e. not unintentionally creepy/ugly, as it's often the case with the "photorealistic" way of doing things). Now it really, really needs HIGH framerate.
