Comparing video players (VCRs, Laserdiscs, DVD, etc.) isn't exactly the same as video game consoles. Because the software that run on a particular hardware (including the peripherals) are very much related. The experience you get from one may be entirely different than the other. Just try to imagine playing actual arcade games vs. playing them on a PC via MAME.sethsez wrote:I keep my laserdisc player around because there are several movies that still aren't on DVD, but I don't have any particular fondness for the player itself. It plays some content I enjoy, but in and of itself there's nothing special about it, and if the movies went to DVD, I wouldn't complain about my laserdisc player being devalued. It's just a piece of hardware with no intrinsic value of its own.
UPDATED:Treasure Developing Sega Gunstar Heroes PS2 release
Except we're talking about game systems, hooked up to the same TV, and assuming an accurate port (otherwise it wouldn't devalue the Saturn or whatever, which seems to be the main complaint). If it's not accurate, then obviously the original is better.
And in any case, most of the Saturn games this discussion turned to are arcade ports anyway.

Exactly. And not only that. Without the "sellout policy of porting shit" that "destroys sega's own legacy" the almighty sega saturn wouldn't have a single Gradius or Parodius games. (As absurd as it sound, the same cannot be said of psx, that at least got Gaiden programmed from scratch). How is that these Deluxe Packs were a nice idea back in the SS days, and now they are shit?sethsez wrote:And in any case, most of the Saturn games this discussion turned to are arcade ports anyway.

Man you people are sick.
jp needs to take a chill pill. I think all of the money he throws around on old videogames has gone to his head.
Anyway glad to hear Treasure is handling the ports. It seems that Sega is really sorry about the state of the Sega Ages collection(For the most part..there are still a handful of gems in there). I assume that the Alien Soldier port will be solid as a rock and I'm excited. Emulation just doesn't seem very friendly to that game and the price of the actual cart is well..ridiculous.
Dynamite Headdy being one of my top 25 favorite Action-platformers of all time I'll take that thank you. Gunstar Heroes? Well that's a given.
Also regardless of the many ports available of each game on the many systems, it's still rather unfortunate that very few of those ports are actually "perfect". A perfect port of Galaxy Force 2 would be just dandy, especially considering not even the Saturn could provide a capable port(Blame it on the shoddy programmers..they probably handled the Gale Racer port as well)
And like a previous poster said. Sega doesn't make a dime when some guy on ebay sells Alien Soldier, Panzer Dragoon, or any other older title on ebay. Hell Sega probably noticed what was going on and decided to get a cut of it. Then again I think the same thing about Square and Final Fantasy Tactics. They(Along with Sony of course) issued a "Greatest Hits" version rather than let the possibility of profitting on a game that garnered a suddenly high demand go.

But I'm done..no sense in adding more to this shmups forum novelization.

Sorry, there's no listing on either of those pages that actually confirms that Treasure is developing the port. Both pages simply say that it's coming out.
Blastaway, we need a link. Are you sure that this port is actually being worked on by Treasure themselves? Or are they just putting their names on it since they made the originals?

The point is that Magic Box DOESN'T have a source that says Treasure is developing it. That site isn't an actual source, for a start - they just copy-paste news (without crediting or linking to the source) they find in Japanese media (and usually in IC too). They do that with little knowledge of what they tell, thoe, which brings them to misinform with assiduity, like in this case. But if they're "pretty reliable" to you, who am I to say the opposite...Dylan1CC wrote: Magic Box can be pretty reliable, not always the best but OK nonetheless. Magic Box make Sp0ng look like amateurs when it comes to posting unfounded rumors and outright lies, and they combine mistranslations and a simple lack of reading comprehension into a lovely mess of unverifiable goop. They should never, ever be used as a primary source for any news.
Rule of thumb: If you see an interesting bit of "news" on Magic Box, wait for it to surface independently from a more reliable source before spreading it.
With regard to the thread at large, I agree with sethsez. Have fun, play games.

Dude, you need to calm down with your tone. No need to have a bug up your ass all the time. And you think I act high and mighty? I would be fully in favor of a nice full modern remake as long as an option to play with the original art was there too.PaCrappa wrote:Shit, that's the game that should get the full modern remake treatment. I like to play RSG, but man it looks like ass compared to something like, well, any Naomi shooter.
It make "look like ass" in technical ways, but when I play RSG I'm always struck by just how great it actually looks; it is a masterpiece of the Saturn's potential and really looks fantastic to me.

I would completely agree with you on that one, except this compilation we speak of is going on Sony hardware. From my experiences with Sony console hardware, its reliability has been questionable to the point where I become paranoid of even buying one. If I could, I'd rather get these games on a platform that can physically withstand the test of time.sethsez wrote: I keep my laserdisc player around because there are several movies that still aren't on DVD, but I don't have any particular fondness for the player itself. Like Jiji said, "Have fun, play games." But it's no fun if the games don't work on the system it was meant to be played on.
No, you need to get informed a bit better when you contradict any of my posts. Your persistency on doing that is totally pointless and only serves to show your ignorance. Now THAT is a "tone".Dylan1CC wrote:Dude, you need to calm down with your tone. I was not contradicting your post. I asked you if you had information to the contrary of what BlastAway posted because I figured you knew of a news site that was reporting on this. You know, since you're the "news guy" i figured I'd ask a question. My random thought on the magic box stuff *gasp* had nothing to do with you. Again, I ASKED YOU if you had a news source that Treasure either WAS or was NOT devving the game. Make sense now, homie?Recap wrote:No, you need to get informed a bit better when you contradict any of my posts. Maybe as usual you just need to brush up on your english skills more. Last time I checked, being a "historian" required good reading and comprehension skills. But maybe that's just me.

Where exactly did you see a high tone here?Recap wrote:The point is that Magic Box DOESN'T have a source that says Treasure is developing it. Recap = guy who repeats himself. That's the definition of the word recap in fact. Recap = repeat. English.Recap wrote:Is that supposed to be a comeback or something?
I asked you twice, do you or do you not have knowledge on Treasure supposedly devving the game. Just say yes or no. Instead of simply saying yes or no, you just keep repeating the fact I mistakenly thought magic box was reliable which was not directed toward you. You misunderstood my reply because of your self importance and arrogance, admit it.
But I guess it must be a "comeback" since you're the one that brought up the word. ha
Where, exactly? You said that "MB could be reliable" when I just said that it never was. Then, I explained you why, and also told you that they didn't have a source about Treasure developing the game. What else do you want? Me answering that I have a source denying what the worst Japanese gaming news site states? Lame.Dylan1CC wrote:You misunderstood my reply, admit it.
On the other hand, you promptly told me to "calm down with my tone" and spoke about bugs and asses when I just give you a quite polite answer. Misunderstood who?

The money JP spends on old video games is HIS business. I own a Saturn, and have NO plans to get a JPSTwo, because I just don't give a rip about Cave, because I like the PS1 shmup exlusives better. I personally don't have a problem with Sega porting their older games, but if JP does, again, that's his business.PepsimanVsJoe wrote:jp needs to take a chill pill. And not a capable port of Galaxy Force II? I find that very hard to believe, considering that the Mega Drive version was pretty good, considering the hardware it ran on. The Saturn version may not be arcade perfect, but so what?? Neither are After Burner II or Space Harrier, but I'm not going shell out an arm and a friggin' leg just to get Yu Suzuki's Game Works for my DC.

Who wants to force you to buy a JPSTwo on this thread? Don't confuse us all for saturn haters please.dave4shmups wrote:The money JP spends on old video games is HIS business.
