Games perfectly playable (on the PC) with one hand

Post by Obiwanshinobi »

Apologies if there already was a similar topic.
I need a game you can control with one hand (and a mouse, preferably). I don't feel like playing point & click adventures or turn-based strategies at the moment; something twitchy would be more welcome. Diablo and the likes are playable, but not PERFECTLY playable with a mouse alone. I could give Baldur's Gate II another chance, but having to put up with Infinity Engine doesn't seem like that hot deal right now.
Moreover, it should ba a must-play title (because if it's must, now's the best time for me to play it). I've already beaten World of Goo. Liked the Gridrunner Revolution demo, but I don't think my backup ancient video card has what it takes to run it (a fan on my latter card went bell up).
Getting myself a '90s style digital joystick for the PC would be another option, but I doubt there's plenty of them in a good shape left out there.
Any suggestions?

Osmos, Canabalt, Peggle, Alley Cat! ... will add more when I think of them.
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

That world of goo is a one hand mouse game. Recently it was sold in a pack of games for charity for a price of your own choice.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I recently purchased a Belkin n52te PC controller - it has a somewhat serviceable D-pad and a number of buttons which you can reach with your other fingers. It is a strictly left-handed controller mainly designed for use in combination with a right-handed mouse, but it might open up some possibilities for other games if playing one-handed is your goal. I considered using it with a SFC emulator just for more lethargic games like RPGs, but I always decided to use a two-handed pad just because that is what I am accustomed to.

Unfortunately this will be a more or less useless post since I have not found a suitable game to play using the n52te exclusively, I have no specific one-handed games to recommend.

La Soeur de Barrage is probably the best mouse controlled danmaku STG out there.

Thanks for your suggestions, keep them coming. Tried out that unicorn jolly jumper and it's enjoyable indeed. That Erasure song rocks too.
As for the Infinity Engine, I enjoyed Icewind Dale back in the day and Planescape: Torment is among my very favourite games. The thing is, last year I purchased a nice fat BG anthology on one DVD for peanuts. The resolution isn't a problem for me even without mods as I'm using a CRT, but when I fired up II, there was something strangely off-putting about it. "Did this engine really use to be completely fine with me?" I wondered. Mind you, I don't get this vibe from Fallout 1&2 for example.
I just happened to finish Shin MegaTen: Nocturne (Lucifer's Call), a heavyweight dungeon crawler with excellent presentation, interface, story and combat system. Now when I'm thinking of BGII, it's like: Infinity Engine + bad character animations (I don't expect of blokes walking and running only in eight directions to do so all that gracefully, but I've already seen it done better) + Forgotten Realms + overall BioWare-ness (the combat made of highly polished cack and so on) = no hum. I'm not saying "never", though, as I don't expect a cRPG to be immediately accessible. I just can't be bothered right after I got my fix of Nocturne stat porn, storytelling and presentation.

Hmm, it seems the only game I remember that fits all your criteria is Zuma. It's PC, it's mouse-only, it's twitchy, it's a must-play.

Liberator (Atari) in MAME. It has only 2 buttons and works fine with a mouse. I played this one in a Global Arcade Classics cab at D&B - great stuff. I think Sega had taken a long look at this one when developing SDI/Global Defense (similar in some ways, but you move the ship with a joystick).

All 3 Arkanoid games, Cameltry, & Puchi Carat are good with a mouse in MAME.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

I wouldn't say they're perfectly playable but since they are turn based I'd say most rouge-likes can be played one hand (at least I usually just play them with one hand). Nethack and Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup are excellent if you're into that type of thing. Definitely not mouse games though...oh, except for Powder which is easily played with one hand and a mouse. Forgot about that one.

Hear, hear. By the way, apparently Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure is playable with one hand and a DualShock(2), as both analogue sticks do the same. Turn-based, piss-easy and not twitchy at all, but reminds me of times when Japanese were making such delightfully silly stuff for home platforms on a regular basis.
P.S. Tyrian 2000 supports mouse, but I still can't see what's so great about that game except for the music. Nice transparencies, though.
