Planet being devoured by its star...

Awesome! How ever, it is not made clear if this planet is a gas giant like Zeus / Saturn or a rock / solid planet like Earth / Mars and it does not explain why the planet went so near to its parent star in the 1st place? Do the orbits of all planets deteriorate in time and would we see something similar happening to Mercury in our solar system? Or did this specific star just got bigger on the verge of going nova?

If this planet is so large, I wonder why nuclear fusions was never initiated at its center to become a star & form a binary system with its parent star?!

As for a shmups reference, this scene comes to mind ;)

Awesome!
The story is, but the image is just an artist's conception. There are no images of planets that far... or any outside of our solar system for that matter. Cool shit nonetheless though. I guess that's one we can mark off as our future home.

Fun fact: this is what's going to happen to Earth when the Sun starts to grow. Not that it matters, humanity will be long gone by then.

There are theories that if it happens slowly enough, the Earth might be pushed out by the expanding Sun. Probably not though - we're fucked. But that's not for a while.

I read an interesting theory that suggested we could slowly alter the Earth's orbit by inducing near-misses with really big ass asteroids. Of course, we would probably fuck up the first one and kill humanity. There's talk of both scenarios here.

And a classic thread I found while searching for the above.

Amen to that. If this is what the afterlife could be then count me in.

Savages, infidels, blasphemers, how could you all forget the Thunder Force III Gorgon fire stage!

The wavy background was one of the coolest things back in the day.
It’s obvious that they used a software sine algorithm to make it animate like a wave.
The Motorola 68000 was excellent at that.

This thread also brings up another question - what is the latest Elite style space exploration/trading game?

I just want to fly around to random places and look at planets - surely SOMEONE has done this, right?

(looking more for exploration and stuff, Freespace 2 still has the whole giant space battle through nebulae covered :D)

Always thought Pulstar's third stage was the meanest-looking "scorcher."

Yes, indeed! And the star eclipse in the background makes it more sinister looking!

The fire stage of Life Force is by far my favorite scorcher

Doesn't that specific Sol Feace stage take place within the upper atmosphere of a gas giant, rather than a scorcher?

I also remember the Boss rising from below and giving out one tough fight!

Speaking of gas giants... this would have made the notorious "Saturn's Rings" battle in Robotech / Macross, some what complicated... ;)
