Speaking of non-shmups, I wholeheartedly recommend Metal Warriors. If you have yet to play it, prepare your jaw to drop.

Yes, absolutely not Shmup like but awesome none the less. A cross between the original and something like armoured core would be a nice update; With online too please!
The universe is neither hostile nor friendly, simply indifferent.

Even without my umbillical cable attached I still have over 12,000 plates of fortified armour AND I have my AT Field! There's NO WAY I can lose!!

Well as long as you are mentioning non-shmups for SNES may I recommend Contra: The Alien Wars? :D

Makes you think what kind of games could we enjoy on more recent platforms if only the likes of Konami and Lucas Arts weren't too busy flexing shaders and flogging dead horses... (Metal Warriors, that is.)

Why?
Saturn games feel ropey, I dislike the 3D elements and confusion of the graphics - it doesn't sit right somehow.
Nice 2D hand drawn pixel art any day for me.

Wild Guns - Great fun with some really cool vibes, but for the price it's not the best game evah or anything.
Hagane The Final Conflict- Is this a must have? It's got some nice touches but it's flawed in places, and frustrating because of it.

Blimey, I bought my loose cart for something like $2+$7 shipping a few years back. I had no idea the price went up that much. In that event at least I've made myself a couple of EPROM cartridges :p

Super pricey game. Complete JP one's are about £70 on YHJ afaik.

I was going to make this exact same post, beaten to it. It easily trumps Assault Suits Valken IMHO. Metal Warriors is like the zenith of western game development and nobody's ever even heard of it.

Woah! Hold the phone!

As soon as I heard that I had to go and find out why I'd never heard of this Metal Warriors, cos Valken is one of the best games on the system.

Here is is:

Credit where credit's due, this looks as though it's done quite nicely. It's such an unashamed rip-off of Valken it's quite unreal (I didn't realise Valken was so popular to be ripped-off, especially by Lucasarts) but I can see some good stuff in there. But the stage design looks uninspired and the combat sucks - why is he point blanking everything and not dying? Valken had some incredible variety in its stages and some awesome set pieces. I'll give this a chance at some point, but "trumping Valken" is very strong language in my book - no mean feat.

Be prepared for some rampant difficulty spikes later on.

Your scepticism must be forgiven as it does sound too good to be true. Let's just say there is more to Metal Warriors than this 1st mission vid shows (think Grand Theft Robot). Moreover, the multiplayer looks quite like nothing else I saw.
There is also a fan translation patch out there for Front Mission: Gun Hazard (Super Famicom game made by Assault Suits people and released by Square in Japan only, hailed by some as superior even to Metal Warriors).

That's a hilarious price. I got Metal Warriors CIB for half that price off Amazon a year ago.

Valken is probably the best of it's design style. you really will be hard pressed to find a better game than it as far as 2D mecha action goes.

I find RangerX to be quite a bit better. Just has more fun dodging and all the stuff you do with your companion is really well thought out with the level design. Gau really left an impression on me with their single game.

If Hagane isn't a must buy then Wild Guns definitely is. It's the best Cabal style game and that's a genre were even mediocre one's are immensely fun. The bullet canceling is is really fun and adds a lot. Great movement options and great enemy patterns. I payed about 38USD for it and I think it was more then worth every penny. If you really wanted to have a scoring comp for it simply ban the infinite milking.

I mean I've mentioned my three favorite SNES games in this thread if none of those are must buys then I don't know what is. Ether your too picky or I'm not picky enough(probably both).

The final boss of Kirby's Dreamland 3!

But really, this thread has really driven home how shmup-deprived the SNES was. I mean, I knew it but yeah.

Will have to give Cotton 100% a go.
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

If you were really into Graduis in the U.S you got 3 pretty quickly. I think TF was really the only long running shmup franchise on Genny but she got all these weird out there fun shmups. I don't think SNES got anything as out there as Biohazard Battle or Curse.

R-Type III was fairly outlandish. Super Aleste/Space Megaforce, on the other hand, was ahead of its time trippy even by Compile standards.

Well, just because I think it's true doesn't mean you will. Reasonable minds can differ, after all.

For what it's worth, I think Front Mission: Gun Hazard is much inferior compared to Valken and Metal Warriors. Still the best thing ever made with "Front Mission" in the name. And yeah, Wild Guns is pretty awesome, might as well +1 that.

I love the SNES, but still keep in mind I think the Genesis is still a lot better when it comes to action games. The only thing is there's nothing that can compete with Super Mario Kart (one of my all-time favorite games) and F-Zero when it comes to racing. Overall I give the slight edge to the SNES, but that's only because the RPGs that never made it to the US alone, would constitute the greatest RPG system ever. Both systems are just filled past the brim with hidden gems.

Why do people in that thread call BioMetal's western soundtrack "American" and "US"? It's European to the bone (made by people from Benelux countries).
